Melbourne Cup 2020

I'm not a fan of horse racing, because I don't like the gambling aspect. Though that's a bit hypocritical of me I know, as gambling is a major funder of Rugby League and the clubs.

Personally with horse racing, I think we all have bigger problems, and we can only do so much, so I am not that fussed with it. Forgive me for being crude, but if some horses dying in horse racing is our biggest concern, we're doing pretty well.

Different but related.my boss owns multiple greyhounds and their living conditions are better than mine 😂

I remember a guy opening a butcher shop in Perth some time ago which was to sell horse meat. His shop was picketed and he got death threats.

He's had his butcher shop for decades , specialising in gourmet meat . He had lots of customers request horse meat over the years so finally decided to sell it.
He stood firm against the minority and he's still thriving. They went away.

Oh good. They must have come to the realisation that humans are on top of the food chain and intelligent enough to manage things for their own survival. Me personally, I draw the line at dogs because we owe them.

Its the usual
People who look at things superficially and then try to link this that and the other to make their point - and their point is always correct.

There are bad eggs in every walk of life but, and some of you will say I am biased with my opinion, but my family has been involved in racing (mainly thoroughbred but also pacing and g'hounds) for several generations now and whilst we have seen some cruelty, the overwhelmingly great majority of people are good kind people and the animals are extremely well looked after.
I have seen worse cruelty to dogs and other farm animals in my time than with race horses.

My point is that the current woke crowd will jump on anything to tell YOU what's GOOD for YOU.

Like it don't like it, think punting is evil, whatever. Its a free country supposedly and horse racing is an extremely well run sport where the overwhelming majority of participants are well meaning.

People will find a problem with anything they want to find a problem with - its the way of the world these days.

Its sad.... it really is, though stopping racing because of it also isnt the answer.

The vegetarian catch cry is "eating meat is cruelty". In some cases it is, though if the whole world went vegan/vegetarian, domesticated cattle and sheep would become almost extinct within a decade, millions if not billions of lives would never come into existence each yr, to for the most part live a decent life until they meet the fork.

Same as the pitbull, I dont endorse dog fighting, but the strict rules of the sport say if a dog turns on either an owner or referee inside the ring it was to be destroyed. While dog fighting was in its prime ( i know how poor a statement that is), culling of unstable animals had the gene pool as extremely human friendly, now the backyard hardman hero has its hands on the breed, we have violence machines bred for looks over purpose, with disregard for temperament. Similar sentiment with Greyhounds, they dont work, they for the best part disappear.

Domesticated horses, they take up alot of resources. If they dont work, I doubt they exist in any real numbers. Domesticated horses die in any number of pursuits when at work.

Dwyer, Tuiaki, McKinnon and the litany of other career ending injuries havent urged Rugby League to be stopped. The difference is the perseverance rehabititation wise when comparing a human being with a horse.

I didnt even bet on the race, i barely ever punt on any form of racing... but that horse that passed today would have lived a better life than almost any other horse on the planet. I just fear the repercussions of knee jerk reactions to these sorts of events, and the reality of what could come to be of bleeding hearts ending and industry that would also end a gene pool.

You make some really good points. It is tragic that yet another horse had to be put down after this year's Cup.

As tragic, though, is that NSW state coffers rely on punters losing their money on racing or NRL and pokies and, well, the ever increasing forms of gambling.

As such, there is no chance it will be banned.

Racing is third biggest industry in nsw
strappers trainers vets horse transport adjustment services studs
Big unemployment ques if they shut it down
Racing 365 days a year it only seems to be the cup where this happens namely the tracks are too hard for European horses, it is not the Aussie bred horses that break down

116 Horses died this year racing

And 30,000 horses in training, not including yearlings and others currently not in in training
Provides full- or part-time employment for almost 250,000 people
Over A$20billion in betting turnover
It ain't going anywhere regardless of the woke crew

" the woke crew" ....I mean, really? Can't people have and express opinions different to yours without labelling?

Nope. Not when the woke crew are the ones assuming they have the high moral ground and if you disagree with them you are dumb, antiquated, racist or worse.
