The reality is he would never go out to intentionally to hurt anyone. Thats all in your head.

He is a competitor. He will win at all costs and works hard to achieve this.

I get your content with not winning, but the sooner the Tigers start adopting the attitude of the Broncos, Melbournes & Bulldogs that demand results, the sooner we will gain financial stability.

Smith is a Champion!

You are seriously arguing the systematic implementation of chicken wings, crusher tackles, working over the knees and ankles of tackled players, all now made illegal because of player safety, all of which came out of the Storm system of which he was captain, as not being deliberate attempts to injure players.

Your position on this is a joke, honestly.

Dont bother replying, I have no time for someone who wishes our team resorted to such low tactics.

That's because they never had a Cameron Smith

Im massively perplexed by people's view on this.

Questioning a penalty after a bloke has laid on the ground for 10 minutes not being able to feel is legs doesnt make a guy a bad guy, but certainly shows a lack of perspective for the moment and I think in the heat of the battle was a mistake, but a very understandable mistake. I was filthy watching live, so there is no benefit of hindsight from me in this.

McKinnon is understandably upset by the whole situation, and his reaction to Smith is extremely natural, why is he not allowed to be upset with Smith and air his grievances.

Why couldnt Smith just say, sorry I upset you mate, didnt meant to, wish I knew I had of and I would have called and apologised earlier. He could even throw in a "at the time I was acting in what I thought was the best interest of my team and lost sight of how that might have made you feel, sorry about that, wasnt my intention"

Smith looks like a champ in this scenario.

Delaying this and blaming 60 minutes has made him feel like he was hard done by. What did 60 minutes really present, that McKinnon was upset with Smith, which he is, which is understandable. 60 minutes didnt create the angst, this angle has been whispered around for at least 12 months without confirmation.

Had Smith responded with empathy, the 60 minutes story probably enhances his reputation.

In my view, his response to the story has actually lowered my opinion of him more than the act itself or the story.

I unfortunately played in game where a bloke broke his neck, it was horrible. On the field most of us knew pretty quickly what had just happened. The stakes were not as high, granted, but it was still a professional game, but no one was worried about football at all at the time, all people were worried about was the bloke on the ground. We called the last 15 minutes off.

Smith doesnt need to apologise for the 60 minutes story, he needs to apologise, because his actions offended a guy who is now paralysed for life, however unintentionally.

What a idiotic fool our NRL Chairman is… Alex talks about his suicidal tenancies in the interview and he comes out with comments like this. As chairman, how idiotic to pick a side in something like this.

Alex has done nothing wrong, he certainly has the right to be a bit upset with Cameron.

The sooner John Grant is kicked out, the better. He almost seems unaccountable to anyone. I remember him making comments about David Gallop being reactionary and they've been even worse!

All he and David Smith have done is bloat the administration, driving league into the ground while Gallop succeeds with the A-League.

I hope Alex decides to sue the NRL... why not also get Dwyer and Tuiaki in and get a class action going.

_ARLC chairman John Grant believes Alex McKinnon has lost some of the support of the rugby league community following his public stoush with Queensland captain Cameron Smith.\
\
The tragic tackle which ended the playing career of McKinnon and left him confined to a wheelchair occurred 16 months ago, but the fallout continues. The former Newcastle forward is still seething about on-field comments made by Smith and the fact that the hooker hasn't been in contact with him since.\
\
The drama continued during the Origin decider, with Smith refusing to speak with the Nine Network during their coverage. Smith is still furious that he wasn't afforded an opportunity to respond on the network's 60 Minutes program, in which McKinnon vented his frustrations.\
\
Grant said it was unfortunate that two of the game's most respected figures were yet to come to peace over the sickening incident, but the governing body wouldn't intervene unless both parties were willing.\
\
"If Cameron is happy with where he is, we don't do anything," Grant said.\
\
"If Alex is happy with where he is, we don't do anything either. It's hard to imagine Alex – and be very careful in how you interpret this – [because] Alex has the sympathy and empathy of 100 per cent of the rugby league community. It's been shown in every way possible during unbelievably tragic circumstances.\
\
"But where he is at at the moment, he has lost some of that support. I don't think that's what he would have wanted."\
\
Smith was one of the stars in Queensland's record-breaking victory, but chose not to broach the issue for fear of drawing attention away from the occasion and the farewell of Maroons stalwart Justin Hodges.\
\
"I don't think tonight's the right night out of respect to the game that was just played and that result for us," Smith said in the post-match press conference.\
\
"Any sort of distraction for me wouldn't have helped our cause tonight so all I did all week was focus on what the team needed from me and what the boys needed from me."\
\
Grant lauded Smith's Origin performance and said he was not surprised the Australian captain moved to deflect attention away from himself during the record-breaking victory.\
\
"That's the sort of bloke he is. Cameron is a great example of the best in rugby league and he has had a very difficult week," Grant said.\
\
"When you stand back from it, it's very unfortunate it's where it is at the moment. The only people who can sort it out are Alex and Cameron. It's [about] where they want this to end … Clearly Alex feels very strongly about it and you can understand the feelings that might come into that. But when you sit down in the clear light of day and say 'Ok, that's what I think, that's what I said, now I'm here', is that where he wants to be?\
\
"They both have to make a decision about if that's where they want to be and if they don't they need to do something about it."\
\
Smith himself was the victim of a late lifting tackle from NSW forward Beau Scott, who faces the prospect of a one-game ban. However, the Storm hooker emerged unscathed and again held the shield aloft after the Maroons reasserted their Origin dominance.\
\
"He's one of the best players to have ever played the game, simple as that," Queensland coach Mal Meninga said.\
\
"When you can put something aside like he's had to endure in recent times and do what he done tonight – not only tonight but what he's done through the week and the back end of leading up to this game – is extraordinary.\
\
"Let's hope we keep talking about Cameron Smith's ability on the footy field and how good a bloke he is and decent bloke he is. We love him."_

Scott's tackle wouldn't have happened if Smith didn't duck his head…

I am totally with you Goose. Cant understand if he knew McKinnon was feeling this way - and I assume that he would of - why didnt he just privately contact him and talk it out. Not prepared to make a full judgement on it until I hear Smiths side of the story, but it is such a shame that the whole thing is now a media circus.

Well said by Goose.

If Smith comes out and he said he tried to call or turn up, he obviously can't empathize with how someone in that situation is feeling. It's not fair to pressure someone by showing up on someones doorstep if they don't want you there.

The only response from Smith that I think would be acceptable is.

1) Sending a txt or email after the incident so Alex could read it when he had the emotional stability to do so. He said he still hasn't read McLeans, but Jordan definitely did the right thing by sharing his sympathy but keeping his distance.

2) Apologize after the airing on 60 minutes as you realize someone is still hurting from your actions.

It's as simple as that. Will be interesting what he says to Fox Sports.

No one has any idea to what lengths he tried and in fact whether he contacted him on Sunday/Monday. Ive seen no reports saying he hasnt. Hammertime, he started a fundraiser for him. He obviously didnt realise that Alex had his knickers in a knot. It stands to reason he didnt know he owed an appology. Its not always obvious when you have offended someone.

The fact the McKinnons held onto this for 18 months only to air it on national tv makes them look like theyre sulking….bit of perspective Alex...we've had footballers lose their lives this year. Yes you copped a raw deal but its not a deal you werent prepared to risk to play the toughest sport on earth. Its totally reasonable to be angry however I question whether it is a wise move to keep airing that anger through the media.

I know it's not a popular opinion but I kind of agree Stryker.

I can only empathise that Alex is mad, and will be everyday if and until he gets use of his body back completely. Yes it is a risk he took playing this game and all care is taken to ensure tackles don't go badly but he is not the first, and sadly I doubt he will be the last to succumb to this. Risk procedures are put into place to ensure people don't get hurt on the job, especially the most qualified, but electricians still get electrocuted, fridgies get gassed and roofers fall to their deaths.

I can only theorise how I would feel if I were Alex. I'd be frustrated, I'd be upset to say the least. But I feel channel 9 led him down the garden path a little with this story and while it gave a good insight into how tough he is doing it, I felt making a villain out of someone who was completely devoid of responsibility for the situation Alex now finds himself in was gutter journalism and is giving Alex someone an outlet to misdirect his frustrations at.

As I said earlier, my uncle is in a worse position than Alex, and will never realise the potential he has when it comes to earnings or damages. My uncle crossed a street and got knocked down by a drunk driver. Alex took the field in a game where he knew he could get hurt, and allowed the media to lay the crux of the fury at the foot of someone completely devoid of responsibility for his predicament he finds himself in. Moreover, it's been shown 60 minutes were willing to omit certain footage from their story, what else have they hidden to maximise effect from that story?
