Mitchell pays another huge price with NRL extending ban to Indigenous All-Stars match

Latrell Mitchell, one of the most influential Indigenous voices within his community, is going to pay another huge price for the tackle that shattered Joseph Manu's cheekbone with the NRL set to rule him ineligible for next year's All-Stars match.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 27: Latrell Mitchell of the Rabbitohs reacts after being sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle on Joseph Manu of the Roosters during the round 24 NRL match between the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium on August 27, 2021, in Brisbane, Australia. As Mitchell prepares to start a six-game suspension for a tackle that left former teammate Manu with severe facial fractures, the NRL has confirmed a clause in the judiciary code will stop the South Sydney ace playing in the exhibition.

Matches such as the All-Stars and Charity Shield have typically not counted towards a suspension which carries over from one season to the next, meaning Mitchell could have returned to the rugby league field before round one.

But the NRL is likely to determine Mitchell's offence is above a threshold meaning he won't be able to play in pre-season fixtures.

Mitchell was charged with a grade two reckless high tackle for his hit on Manu, an incident that has ended the season of both players.

Mitchell has been a colossal figure in the All-Stars concept, taking a powerful lead in promoting health and education messages throughout the Indigenous community in the week-long celebration of both his and Maori cultures.

He's also led the side's pre-game war cry, becoming a prominent leader for his people.

Mitchell even asked his former club the Roosters if he could stay in Australia in the 2019 pre-season to play in the return of the All-Stars concept instead of travelling to the United Kingdom for the World Club Challenge. The Roosters granted his wish.

And now Mitchell has learned he won't be able to feature in a game he considers one of the most important on the calendar.

"He's been magnificent," Indigenous All-Stars coach Laurie Daley said of Mitchell's contribution to the concept. "He's a great leader, a real presence within the group - and he's the one they all gravitate towards. They want to be around him.

"He's able to stand up for what he believes in and he'll stand up for his people. He's a very strong man and I think he's developed into a great leader."

The number of games the South Sydney superstar misses at the start of the regular season next year under incoming coach Jason Demetriou will depend on how deep the Rabbitohs go into this year's finals series.

But undoubtedly Wayne Bennett's longtime assistant would have been hoping his biggest attacking weapon would have had some football under his belt before he returns from a suspension.

The 24-year-old found a strong advocate in Timana Tahu, who defended Mitchell's character after criticism stemming from last Friday night's clash against the Roosters.

Tahu has previously warned Mitchell could be driven away from the game, a message only heightened after it emerged his family had received online threats after the Manu tackle.

"If he doesn't listen to the outside noise, I think he should be right," Tahu said. "When you get death threats, he wouldn't be sleeping well and nervous thinking about that.

"But for him leaving the game, he's playing too good [a brand] of footy to be leaving. I think he has a burning desire to win a GF with South Sydney.

"Because there are a lot of people in lockdown, there are a lot of people who want to vent and I think Latrell has taken the brunt of it.

"I feel like people jump down his throat a little bit too quick. My opinion is that Latrell plays aggressively … for Latrell to be called a grub, he's not a grub. He's passionate and for him to be calling him a grub, they shouldn't be judging him."

😂

Tahu thinks it'll push him away from the game?
What else is he going to do?

What a diva.
Do the crime, do the time.

We've seen enough from him to know that this statement isn't true.

Why shouldn't we be judging him?
Isn't it wrong for a human to stand by as some one does something wrong to another human and not stand up for the person being wronged?

Does anyone believe this stuff ?

Latrell has a big complain when some one calls him a name on the internet and goes out on the field and kicks people in the head, stomps on their hands, throws balls into their faces and shoulder charges some one into their cheek and eye.

What a backwards world.

And it shouldn't count it his suspension either ....it isn't a NRL game

My initial thoughts too... Though it will hurt him

The Punishment for the tackle is fair and should include this game on top. If it pushes he away from the game that’s on him as he made the error and needs to pay the price.

In terms of the carry on towards him and his family that’s all a bit much and would be upsetting for anyone.

Word.

I don't agree with families being abused and sent death threats. Crossing the line and has legal implications for those involved. Is it really worth it? I'd say no chance!

However, the grubby acts Latrell has displayed this year and going back... I think it's fair for him to be called a grub by sports fans.

There's reasons other guys like Greg Bird, Paul Gallen, Michael Ennis were called grubs their whole careers and its not because they played aggressively and/or passionately...

Furthermore, how disgusting has it been seeing the media try and downplay the situation with Manu.

The commentators, the referees and the post game show hosts.

Timana defending him now.
An article saying he may walk away from the game, he can't play in the All Stars match...

Are we supposed to feel sorry for him?
The media team are playing clean up crew for Latrells image.

I hope everyone can see through this....
The guy is bad news.
Looks to intentionally hurt people during games, even his so called friends... wasn't Luke Garner his mate too? Kicked him in the face.

He wants to be this role model for the indigenous and speak up about anti bullying and whatnot then goes out and karate chops Nofo in the neck and drives his shoulder into some guys face.

I hope Joey Manu is OK.
Boo hoo, Latrell can't play an all star game.
Neither can Manu. Probably can't even see out of 1 of his eyes because of Latrells recklessness.

If the indigenous people want a good role model... I know a guy.

I don't mind him to be honest. Though him and Cody Walker will cost them a big game his year for sure. So easy to get riled up.

Still think he should be in the centres.
You'd have him in ya team if ya could.
Gun player.

Not a good bloke though.

Saw the vision earlier … Latrell looks massive I actually couldn’t believe it was him at first lol

Why is he trying to hurt his own team mates? He runs with his elbows pointed up…Hosty should have belted him
Kicks his best mates in the head.
Garner, Manu.

Strange guy

I'm curious to see what Manu will be like coming back from that horrific injury. He showed a lot of restraint when it happened I'm surprised he didn't punch on.

I reckon he is just immature and gets away with it because he is so good.
Sounds like a thing.

I think he's well respected around the traps too (not with the fans but with the right peoole)

Seems pretty clear that the NRL wants to keep as many stars available to play as possible. Good for fans, good for ratings, good for revenue. If he was Shaq Mitchell the NRL wouldn't have a problem suspending him.

Latrine is taking full contract training a bit too seriously. Souffs need to tell him to calm down until he plays his "mates" in other teams before caving in faces and smashing heads.
