Surely that's not allowed. I've never heard of a club paying a player more one year so they can pay him less next year. He's already agreed to his $800k a year and that's what he will get.

we have cap space this year so not sure if we can do it given we have the space to give him more this year should it not matter how he gets the money

If the player agrees you can front-load their payment. And yes they get the same total salary regardless of how the installments are paid.

The NRL specifically outlawed back-loading because it was getting so many clubs and players in trouble.

Look I would live him gone but really what’s the point in letting him go if we have no one to replace him?

If the Dragons want us to pay most of the cash we should get something in return.

At this stage no one worthy of 300k+ is coming our way next year and we will be without BJ and potentially JTJ but make a teams squad sitting a fraction above us better.

I was under the impression this was only possible at the commencement of a new deal. That might be possible as part of a settlement deal.
After reading what the Broncos did with lodge anything is possible.

Mbye just needs to be told that he won't be playing first grade next season,at all, just like the Panthers did with Mansour. This will significantly drop his value for 2023 and damage his chances of getting another contract. He will find another club, he will adjust his value and he will be gone by next season, just like Mansour.
