It's not outrageous money at all. It's market rates.
If 10 NRL clubs were chasing him, all offering him around a million bucks for 3 years, what are we supposed to turn around and say no, stay loyal and take our 100k offer! I don't have the specific details around which clubs were/weren't after him but i believe all Sydney clubs had a crack, as well as the Storm and Canberra. They all see enough in him to think he's the next Lote etc and that's he worth a shot.
The fact is we have little depth in the outside backs and most of our depth players (and many of our starting backs) are quite small. Here we have a big, strong, fast and mature freak on our hands. Exactly what we need and what we need to take a gamble on.
Imagine the outcry if the most talented junior we've produced in years left and became a star at another club, and in a position we are totally desperate in.
It is a risk as he's just a kid, but over 4 years, and with incentives built in it's not as big a risk as some make out it is. For the chance of having the next Tuqiri, Inglis or Folau that's a chance we have to take. Those players don't join us in their prime. We have to create them ourselves, and for the first time in a long while, we have.
He may not go on to become a household name like those listed above, but i'd even settle for a BJ Leiliua type player as being a successful outlay.
