Game of two halves really with some positional changes occuring and some very, very dubious officiating in the match from a chap who was reffing his first game above junior rep level from what I was told.
I will say firstly that the ground was a joke in terms of night football. Completely insufficient, misdirected lighting similar to what you expect at a backwater training field. If you want proof of this the score sheet on NSWRL website has got the score sheet wrong in terms of some try scorers and in terms of goals Meaney was kicking and he didn't kick 5.
First half was an arm wrestle in the opening exchanges. The BRET forwards started to get a roll on in particular big Ava and Junior and Politini got the side rolling. The rest of the half was dominated by BRET. Meaney played the entire first half at the back and the side looked calm, composed and well driven. BRET recieved 0 penalties in the first half and bar one line break all of Mounties points came from being gifted field position by penalties about half of which were highly dubious. Waters directed well, Chisolm looked creative in his first game back from injury and composed football was played.
Things went off track after half time. Simona was moved to fullback and the side were ok for the first 20 but nowhere near the intensity and application of the first stanza. BRET received their two penalties for the game deep in their own territory, a few ball were dropped as crossing the line etc.
The real turning point came when after a tackle Pelo came up wanting to fight Waters, Waters did the right thing and backpeddaled yet Pelo and another kept coming after him. No punches were thrown yet Mounties received the penalty, from there the decisions really went Mounties way including one of the worst I have seen in a long time. Mounties went for a short drop out. The ball grubbered on the ground directly at Dayne Craig who was standing on the 10m line. The Mounties player picked it up about a metre before the 10m line….play on and a line break.
A missed conversion from Mounties was the difference in the end along with Meaney having an off night in pretty difficult conditions. Despite the poor calls there is really no excuse for the drop in intensity shown by the side to let Mounties back in with a chance to win the game. All players had their good and bad moments but now it is to look forward to the game against the Bulldogs 3pm Saturday at Leichhardt where we we surely be missing a few players on reserve for NRL
