MOYLAN MAYBE RELEASED ..

I want him.
I'm not convinced with Tui at fullback, albeit I have never seen him play there.
I would prefer a proven fullback like Moylan.
I'm also not convinced with Reynolds at 5/8th.

I would love to start the season with
1\. Moylan
6\. Tui
7\. Brooks
9\. Reynolds

14\. Liddle

Not sure Liddle is ready to play 80 mins and Reynolds would offer more at 9 than Matty Mac.
I think we might get more long term value out of Reynolds only playing 50 mins and preserving him a bit.
I think the big minutes Eiso can play justifies carrying a second hooker on the bench, depending on minutes we get from Matulino and Packer.

Disagree as Liddle will be able to play 80 minutes.

However to play Tui at 5/8 when he is not a 5/8, play Reynolds at hooker when he is not a hooker and keep the Rookie of the year on the bench - all to accommodate Moylan who is staying at Penrith anyway is ludicrous.

Straight swap with Maloney is what's being mentioned

Maloney wants more $$ . A straight swap doesn't achieve that . Would cost him more in tolls & fuel too .

I doubt someone earning 700k + would be worried about paying tolls and paying out for more fuel
I know I wouldnt ..

You've missed the point .
Maloney is whinging about being underpaid now . Why would he go somewhere else for the same money then have added costs piled on ?

It's Moylan who ( allegedly) wants out of his club not Maloney .

Teams that win *always* accommodate star players. The idea you can put together a top 30 of identically talented, hard working pros with no egos and no man management required at all is a fantasy. To win you need outstanding talent, and sometimes outstanding talent needs careful handling.

That's the exact problem being reported about the NSW team. Filled with arguably the best individual players, but not necessarily the best team players.

Fair points, however I only see Reynolds as a running 6 and think Tui may offer more ball playing ability.
I think Reynolds would be a really good hooker with his running game, enthusiasm and defensive work rate.
Has Tui actually proven himself in any position? I think not. Yes I have faith in Cleary saying fullback is his best position, but I have seen enough of him at 6 that I think he could make that his position with a good off season and plenty of improvement left in him.
Finally not just to accommodate Moylan, I'd be interested in any young proven fullback as I see this is the one position out of the big 4 we haven't replaced.
Woods>Matulino
Moses>Tui
Brook>Brooks
Teddy>**Moylan**
Bonus = Reynolds and more time to develop Liddle

Unfortunately we do not know the deep effects Moylan maybe suffering,we should let Gould and co sort the mess out…it really isn't our problem to be honest...

Jesus you are guillable TT.
The spoilt brat wants more money and Gus has moved him and his request to the backburner until the finals series is over.
The amount of people claiming depression these days is outrageous. Its mostly snowflakes chucking a tantrum when life gives them a curve ball.

Agree 100% Stryker, 100%

I'd be really careful about that, we don't know what is truly going on. Especially to say that when one of our own players committed suicide, I would avoid making accusations about other people's apparent or not mental health. We just don't really know.

On the other hand if he has issues and needs time to deal with them, I don't think Tigers are desperate enough to want to get involved with that. It's like with Foran, the guy has had personal problems and he needed to be able to get his head straight, but he's also on to his 3rd club in 3 seasons.

End this thread already.

Moylan is a head case, let him be benched and work out his issues. Gus isn't a newcomer to this and if it was contract BS he would have let him walk already (like he did Lewis and others). Instead Gus has had the Psych tell him that the guys is not coping. The best money is going to the finals and asking for a $1mil a season. Not scraping 800K from a team transfer. Moylan is not going to be signing with us. He will need to work out a way of dealing with the pressure of NRL, which is pretty extreme or quit. Hey even if you are a reserve on the Newcastle Bench you are still doing pretty damn well.

*** being depressed sucks and so many people get depression through no fault of their own. If you are suffering call Lifeline 13 11 14, go on a holiday and reachout! You are not alone. ***

No inside info or anything but, I'm not giving us a chance to get Moylan. Lolo deserves a year at fullback and if he doesn't kick on, then we'll go back into the market for a fullback. Besides that, I just don't see Moylan fitting into next years team or Penrith releasing him without compensation.

Sorry but LoLo doesn't deserve anything, neither does any other player in 2018 ,
If he's the best in his position compared to the competition, and shows it consistently. Then he should get the position if that's best for the team.
In the unlikely event that we got Moylan, Tui would have to show that he is better if he wants 5/ 8 or the FB position.
I'm hoping that the old system of Coaches favourites went when the last Coach departed.
Next year, I I hope that every player has to fight off someone to get and keep every position.
I don't care if Moylan comes or noti just want our team picked on form,
I don't think the old Favourites Club will be in vogue next year

I agree that guys need to be picked on form but it is inevitable that a number of the guys are already locks for their positions….at least half the side.

Talking about favourites etc, I am a bit stumped as to why Sironen and Marshall-King were both given debuts but aren't on the 2018 roster. Were these favours or were they picked on form?

I wondered that too. Especially with Marshall Snr coming back, I would have though we were definitely re-signing Marshall Jnr.

Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary has given the strongest indication the club would chase Penrith captain Matt Moylan if he became available.

While the Panthers released a statement on Monday declaring Moylan intended to see out a four-year contract, speculation that the former Australian representative is unhappy at the club continues to mount.

The 25-year-old will sit out the finals series for personal reasons with Panthers general manager Phil Gould declaring Moylan needed time away from the game.

Former Panthers coach Cleary was asked about the possibility of reuniting with Moylan at Concord if the five-eighth seeks a release at the foot of the mountains.

"My understanding is he wants to stay and has never stated he wants to leave," Cleary said at the Wests Tigers presentation evening on Tuesday.

"But would I be interested? Yes. I rate him as a player and a person.

"[But] that hasn't happened yet and it's speculation."

Cleary handed Moylan his NRL debut during the 2013 season at Penrith and has watched his development closely.

"I really enjoyed coaching him and have kept a relationship with him since," Cleary said.

"I find him a terrific kid, great player, well-known local junior and [he] made an immediate impact.

"I'm not privy to all the information but hope it works out well for Matt because I've got a lot of time for him."

Cleary admitted replacing James Tedesco in the Wests Tigers No.1 jersey next season has proved a challenge, although the club picked up Warriors utility Tui Lolohea mid-season after missing out on signing Moylan's teammate Dylan Edwards before the June 30 cut-off.

"A guy like James Tedesco is impossible to replace, so we've used that money for about 15 other players," Cleary joked.

"That [fullback] role is up for grabs, Tui is in the box seat but there's probably another signing along the line of someone that could fill that role.

"There's a couple of spots still available but it's a weird situation with the new pathway system.

"A lot of players will be off contract and falling out of clubs, we'll sit back and see how it goes. We're not in a hurry."

It's been a rollercoaster season for Cleary, who took over a Wests Tigers club in tatters off the field in April.

The club sacked former coach Jason Taylor and when Cleary arrived the team's well-documented 'big four' – Tedesco, Aaron Woods, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks – all had their futures up in the air.

Five months on and Cleary may have lost three of those four but has added stability and signed a host of talent for next season.

"The first month was radical in many ways, a lot work done in recruitment and the last couple of months it's been smoother sailing," he said.

"I thought our performances in the last 10 games were as good as we could hope for. We won the games we should have won and were competitive in the others.

"A lot of the younger guys got exposure to the NRL which they otherwise wouldn't have had so that will help them for next year.

"Our depth will be completely different."

The signings of Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer, Ben Matulino and Chris McQueen will add a new dimension to the side's attack.

Benji Marshall's return to the club and the signings Robbie Rochow, Taane Milne, Mahe Fonua and Corey Thompson will add further depth to a promising squad for 2018.

"I feel like we're ahead of where I thought we would be," Cleary said.

"We are going to reset with a bunch of things we will be changing, but I'll still coach the way I have been so far.

"There's a long way to go but the last couple of months has definitely helped."

I wonder if steam bellowed from Gus's ears upon reading that Ivan was interested in Moylan? He probably had a few choice words in private … Karma couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Revenge is best served cold.

Just read the herald version, the comment from Cleary was as below;
"That role is probably up for grabs. Tui Lolohea is in the box seat there but there's probably another signing somewhere along the line for someone who could help fill that role.

**Tigers' Cleary states Moylan NRL interest**

Ivan Cleary has revealed interest in luring Matt Moylan to the Wests Tigers if he becomes available from Penrith.

Having given Moylan his NRL debut in 2013 at the Panthers, he has remained in contact with the 26-year-old since Cleary's Penrith departure in 2015.

Moylan also has links to the Tigers through their chief executive Justin Pascoe, who had been at Penrith as chief operating officer and CEO from 2012-15.

The Panthers insisted after meeting Moylan on Monday that he and the club were "100 per cent committed" to his future at Penrith. But it came just days after chief executive Brian Fletcher revealed the player only a "50-50" chance of being at the club next year.

And while Cleary said he believed the fullback-turned-five-eighth would stay, he'd consider pouncing if he was released by the Panthers.

"He's never stated he wants to leave. But it's been a big deal, right?" Cleary said.

"So would I be interested? Yes.

"But that hasn't happened yet. It's all speculation at this stage.

"I rate him as a player and as a person."

The Tigers still have salary-cap space available for next year.

After developing his team in leaps and bounds at the end of a whirlwind year, Cleary is prepared to play the waiting game and see what becomes available from other clubs before making his move.

And speaking at Tuesday's club awards night, he said finding an external replacement for the departing James Tedesco at fullback was still an option.

"A guy like James Tedesco is just basically impossible to replace," Cleary said.

"That role is probably up for grabs.

"Certainly Tui Lolohea is in the box seat there, but there is probably another signing somewhere along the line of someone who can fill that kind of role, too."

Moylan on Monday was granted time away from the game by the Panthers to deal with personal issues. He is unlikely to play again this season for Penrith.

Cleary admitted he'd been surprised by the situation playing out at Penrith, but was not privy to the details.

Moylan was given the Panthers' captaincy after Cleary's departure in 2015, and the Tigers coach said he hoped the role hadn't put too much on his plate.

"I've got a lot of time for Matt," Cleary said.

"I've really enjoyed coaching him and kept a relationship with him since. I find him a terrific kid and great player.

"I'm not too sure what's happened there. I would hate to feel as though he's got too much to do.

"Knowing Matt for what he is, I'm sure he hasn't done anything wrong. I hope it works out one way or another."

If he goes, it is pretty obvious he will wind up at the Sharks.

I don't think its obvious at all. The Tigers are a huge chance of getting Moylan.
As for this so called swap of Maloney for Moylan, can't see it happening.
Maloney is 32 in 2018, he is going to want minimum 3 year deal on as much if not more than Moylan's presently on, not gunna happen.
Panther's HAVE CAP PROBLEMS, there is no way you can sign a complete roster of young up and coming players unless they are all on huge back- ended deals.
Panther's first priority is to upgrade contracts of Dylan Edwards and Tyrone May, there goes Moylan's money.
There is this absurd notion that because Maloney and Moylan have the same manager that the Sharks have the inside running.
Ivan gave Moylan his start in the NRL, they had and still have an excellent relationship, he is good mates with Nathan, if our offer is close to other club's, we're in this up to our ears.
In fact I think the Tigers will get him, and he would be a great signing.
Moylan's not the problem Griffin is, and Gould is the creator of the problem, the sacking of Ivan was always going to comeback and bite Gould BIGTIME.

The Tigers have 2 chances of getting Moylan, buckleys and stuff all.

THINK AGAIN.
