My season preview of sorts

We have been a streaky team for years. I think that's hard to change in a year. Even the years we did well we were awful for large periods. I still think we can win the competition this year, but we won't win consistently. Winning the comp seems a marginal proposition based on a streak at the right time. Not on being a Top 2 team playing winning footy all year. I don't think we are capable of that. In 2005 and nearly in 2011 one streak can take you all the way to the title so I wouldn't completely rule out us doing it again. However I don't think we can be a consistent winner yet with this roster. Reasons being - doubts at 1 and 7, not enough quality depth in certain areas, a few talented rookies still a bit raw and a rookie coach inheriting a coaching and playing roster.

In 2010,11,12 expectation among the fan base, players, coaches and media were we were in the Top 4 teams in the competition and a genuine title shot. This season after a dismal 2012 and with little to no recruitment and a few losses we are rightly on about the 10th line of betting and not in any of the experts Top 8's. Which is probably a good given the side seems to show signs of burden with favouritism many times over the past 3 seasons. It was obvious early in 2012 the competition favourites tag weight heavily on us and teams ambushed us early and we were rightly labelled soft. Players who struggled with that weight of expectation last year will relish the low key feel around the joint

Don't get me wrong i'm pumped about Potter. Undoubtably most fans on here are excited about Sheens getting punted and Potter replacing him. Sheens was stale, stubborn and created a culture where accountability had been lost to a point. Whilst Sheens was very frustrating at times with his stubborn selections and tactics he did have a big influence at our club. He will be a hard main to replace to a degree. He did win a title and have a couple of top 4 appearances and an attractive playing style over a decade. I'm happy with Potter as coach. He seems no frills, hard working, honest and lacking in any sort of ego. However like Potter says himself, Sheens had coached 600 games in the NRL and Potter 0\. So it's a step up for Potter and whilst i'm sure he knows his craft it's still the pressure of being a first year coach in the NRL in a big sydney club. Another thing Potter has to deal with is an inherited squad and coaching staff. Of course he is going to say all the right things, however he might well be looking at some players and coaches and having large doubts and thinking i might need to ship these guys out in a year or two to effect real change. His hands have been tied in many respects being a bargain basement coach.

I just look at our squad now and i don't think it measures up with Melbourne, Canterbury, Souths and The Cowboys. They are my 4 real heavyweights. We could beat them at our best but not over a season. I think we lack the depth in our 25 to sustain a very high ladder position. I still think there is a lot of talent here however too many holes to be consistent both in the starting side and in the list overall. Im happy Miller is getting a decent crack however I couldn't be sure whether he will be boom or bust. I thought he was decent in the Toytoa Cup without being as certain as i was that Lui would do well. Like most rookies i expect him to struggle at times. At fullback i'm no fan of Moltzen and Tedesco whilst a great prospect is coming off a knee and is still a rookie. Thats half a spine that doubts remain over for this year at least. The starting pack in great (Galloway, Farah and Woods) however with rep commitments and injury worries there is little to no starting quality or experience in behind that. I tink we could be in big trouble there even with 1 injury. The backrow has decent players in their own right but a poor mix when put together. lacks size and lacks impact overall. There is no one there outside of BMM who might be able to run over blokes or create havoc. Then you have Ayshford and Utai, who lets be honest might not make a huge amount of teams starting backlines. Lawrence I think can get back to his best, but we haven't seen it for a couple of years.

Yes we still have the Robbie and Benji show and they could go on a magic streak again. They are 2 brilliant footballers in their own right. However 2 finals appearances in 7 years is the cold reality of it all. 05,10 and 11 they had more pieces around them to evalate the team. We need the pieces around these players to be both more dynamic and more consistent. LIke a Hodgson, Prince, Lui, Ellis etc. More players teams are worried about or at least gam planning for. I think given time we have some super talent that can emerge and do this. Guys like Sirro, Tedesco, Koribete, Noafolamu, Brooks -there is the making of a super side here. However it will probably take a couple of years for it too all come together. They will all have teething problems. There rookies so they will have their moments i'm sure of brilliance and probably games when aspects of their game get found out.

Bottom line I think we might see more of the same old streaky Tigers this years. Ups and down, unexpected losses and moments of magic. Potter has inherited a squad that whilst talented, is flaky and has holes in it. I think his first job is to install a tougher culture of accountability and improve the teams defence. Small gains in these areas i think we will see on the field this season. However it might make 2-3 years to install a true winning culture. I think the best hope is not the Benji and Robbie show, but the serious young talent that should emerge in the next 2-3 years to help them, or take over to some degree.

If it was a EPL style first past the post competition I would say we are no hope this year as there are 4-5 sides. Sides more adapt and suited to winning consistently. However in the NRL you can win it on a streak so I couldn't rule us out, if like 2005, that young talent fires together and blitzes teams. 5th to 8th for mine if injuries are kind, 9th to 12th if we suffer a few.

Eddie, I love ya style! A PASSIONATE TIGER!! We need a SMART 7! In MILLER, BROOKS and MOSES, I believe we have, "IF" Benji let's these blokes play their game! And we need at least 2 BIG BOPPERS with REAL GRUNT!! The WHOLE JOINT needs MONGREL,,how many times in the last 6 years are we leading by 20 odd with 15 to go and LOSE or win by a point! We need a HUGE ATTITUDE CHANGE,,if we are in front by 20,,,make it 40!!! And, "IF" Benji does no kicking in general play we will win more then we lose!!! I can smell the DEEP HEAT,,BRING IT ON TIGAAAAR FANS!!!

great to read some in depth analysis

I agree that there is a stack of talent coming through and we could be well placed to let it happen and in 2-3 years we will be killing it, but who knows if Benji and Robbie will still be at top form [or even playing with us] by then

anyway very exciting to see it all happen. I think top 8 this year is a good goal and hope to see improvement each year from there.

Very hard to put a handle on 2013.My heart is telling me we could be in for a great year my brain is telling me bottom quarter of the comp.

Many concerns about our spine, front row depth and forward balance but on the other hand it is the start of a new era under Potter. Also we don't know what is going to pan out in 2013 re the drug thing, some of the better teams might get ripped apart and of course the dreaded injury curse can strike any

This Saturday night should give us a better take on what might lay ahead in 2013

Had to laugh about BMM running over the opposition. Mate if you go to the games BMM struggles to hold the ball let alone even break a tackle, so run over anyone, I have never seen this. But he dose look big.

I have always been a believer that a team with a full hand (9,7,6 & 1 + coach) have the capability to win a premiership.

To me the real changes in our game of late are;
1/ The points scored from kicks, or attacking kicks whatever we want to call them.
2/ The emergence of the Polynesian factor coming up through the ranks and the size they bring across the park. Having said that their is still a place for talented smaller players in our game who play above their weight.
3/ Due to the size and momentum players now generate, injuries such a pectoral tears and such are more common.

Based on what I have said and what I have seen last few years, Tedesco needs to play fullback, and Miller needs to dramatically improve his long kicking game otherwise we will struggle to make the eight.
But as always I am an optimist because we have Anasta who can kick, and Potter can instill years of fullback experience into Moltzen. So top eight is guaranteed and a real shot at the premiership in finals matches where the class of Robbie and Benji will be a key factor.

Of course no team can loose two or three of their big guns and still win a premiership, we are no different.

Bit harsh on BMM, he is a quality youngster, good size and speed. Look forward to his development this year under Potter. Tigers are top 6 for sure this year on the back increased discipline under Potter. Looking forward to the Foundation Cup this weekend!

I suggest you need to open your eyes when you go to a game.

Great post Eddie, I agree 110%. Serious concerns in a few positions, also lots to be excited about but I am not expecting to see instant success, just progress. For me, the key is obviously our defense. That's Potter's biggest task and boy is it a tough one. This team has been soft for years, that needs to change.

As i was saying the lack of a couple of Front Rowers to back up Woods & keith is a worry if we get injuries to these two.

good read.

I worry about Miller as well, i keep reading on here that Miller is a steady headed halfback who runs the game and plays good percentages, I dont see him like that at all, he is a decent organiser, but not top shelf, with the ability to make big plays and a few errors. I think he'll be servicable, but Im not certain, I also expect him to come up with a couple magic plays along the way, im just hoping his errors are low and decison making is strong. Defence a question, but did improve last year, if he improves again, might not be an issue.

Im a bit contrary to most others on here in terms of front rower depth, despite having no one first grade proven, i think our tier 2 props are pretty close, this is an if and a big if, providing Galloway and Woods get through the first 10 games without an injury, I think that time will be enough for the young guys to develop, Buchanan looks like getting the bench spot, assuming he keeps it, I reckon after 10 weeks getting 20, 30 or even 40 off the Bench, he would be readyish to replace a prop for anything other than a long lay off. If we lose a prop early we may be asking too much of our young guys however. Guess it is not ideal.

Like all clubs if we lose a superstar in Farah or Benji, we will struggle. That is the modern game.

If we are to have a good year, I think we are going to need more out of our centres than we got last year, but have shown they have ability, both well down last year, and for me I think Ayshford was prob our biggest disappointment. if they perform well, I suspect we'll be very tough to handle in attack.

One last unknown, is what to do with Fulton, we cant play Fulton and Anasta as our back row, IMO Anasta offers more, does that leave Fulton on the bench, if so, is Fulton suited to the bench?? He has to be in the side somewhere, her was near enough to our best last year.

My prediction is 5-8 for us.

Defence a question, Goose? If you've seen him play you'll know his defence is AMAZING. rewatched round 4 2012 just looking at him and moltzen and his defence was the best in the backs by far! Only defensive 'error' he made was when an attack bounced off him and then moved sideways into more defenders.

Moltz wasn't half bad either, in defence and attack. And he did top score in tries at the tigers in 2012 so give him a bit of a break.

And, khristian…you're so wrong. i'm calling tigers at 17th right now, surprise entry by the central coast bears!

Ive seen him play probably 50 games even saw him run around for matraville high, his defence has improved alot and was quite possibly amazing the day you are refering to but believe me overall he needs to work on it, it seems to be getting better but it needs too

50 games? damn, wish i could have seen him play that many. Dont have foxtel so i have to try my best catching his work in the nrl and toyotacup final. I've only looked at him in 2012, defence seemed solid and in that gamed i REALLY noticed it was good.

I agree about needing top quality 1,6,7,9… 6 and 9 are covered but the inexperience of Miller and Tedesco will be the difference in the big games if we get there? They need time to find there feet in 1st grade and Potter being patient in allowing them to make mistakes and learn from it . So the point is we have 2 rookies on board and you can add Korribete to the fray and it's really sounding like we are in a building era with a new coach to go with it and Woods also his 2nd year . Didn't Tim Sheens once say "you can call yourself a 1st grader once you play over 50 1st grade games ". So personally i'm not expecting big things just play with courage , heart and for the Jersey , being competetive and be able to say we never stoped trying .... if this occurs i'm 1 happy fan.

well, woodsie is at 48 nrl games. he'll be a 1st grader pretty soon  And i dont think there are any doubts about koro's ability to step up at nrl level. That just leaves teddy and miller. And we can have a better look at them on saturday and see what's what.
