Penrith have been trying to extend his contract for over a year now like i have said before i think Nathan will be playing for the Tigers next year Gus has said in the past if he wants to leave he can and Gus knows he has alot of good young players he needs to tie up
And Nathans knows what he has at Penrith been there for a few years if you want to stay just sign the new contract

Yes and two of our ex players integrity was dragged through the mud on here for having contracts on the table for lengthy times leaving the club hanging while they made a decision as to what direction they wanted to go in.
Seems that same standard is not being held towards Nathan by Tigers fans cause we may be a good chance of getting him. Im sure Penrith fans and the club would like to know one way or another before they lose anymore players to other clubs if he does decide to walk.

Nathan is still signed for next year our 2 were not. I don't think we can even have contract discussions until later in the year anyway.

Yep understand but it appears that Penrith are getting to that point where the longer he holds off the more indecision it places on securing further contracts.
You would think it can only be them or us - and or the value of the contract.
I realise he has time till other we can talk to officially talk but lets face it apart from figures the talk has more than likely started some time ago.

I can just see uncle Nick reaching for the brown paper bags now.I would not put anything beyond him and the NRL accepting it as being legit

The main point is we have to extend Ivans contract until 2023 then we can rest a little easy.

Yep that’s the key to it all .

And it’s not just the Roo$ters who’d be interested . Whoever Bellamy doesn’t sign with will be keen too .

For all we know the Ivan/Nathan show is all smoke and mirrors. Gould is a pretty shrewd character, and to outfox him takes someone even more shrewd. Ivan Cleary is that.
As someone here said, 'Why leave Penrith when they're building to something?'. In interviews Nathan seems pretty happy there, has mates there, and knows how that team gels, but he can't come out and say he loves it there and doesn't want to leave or his price goes down.
Why sign now? String Gould along and pump up the price, wait for the bidding war to escalate his value into ridiculous overs then sign with Penrith.
We may not be, and maybe never were, in the picture. Only Ivan and Nathan know. If we are, we'll find out at the last minute. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Im willing to bet that all involved in Nathan's negotiations have been deep into any contract talks with anyone. Im willing to bet that they are waiting to see if he's heavily involved with NSW winning origin, panthers winning the comp and if he becomes the test number 7\. If they get those 3 lined up, the big price tag will follow him.

Im not expecting anything from Nathan's camp until end of the year. I'll come back to this thread then

Brooks recent outstanding form could force a re think. Of course the 6 and 7 combo of Cleary and Brooks looks great, but it would mean a lot of cap space is been taken up and would restrict what money we had to bolster other areas we are short in.

Brooks is off contract at the end of next year and his value will nearly double going off what quality halves now demand and of course Cleary would be on more. Unless they convince JR to move to ESL I don't see it happening without actually shedding Brooks and I don't want to see that

Simple solution….

Josh Reynolds - medically retire.
Stays on as assistant of sorts, would prove valuable.

I'd like to think negotiations have commenced to extend Brooks' contract. He's stayed, he played and now he should be paid. We have a pretty useful 5/8 in ISP who allowed to develop, will be a good partner with Brooks.

What? Gamble?

He just hasn't got it mate.
Won't win a comp with him playing #6

It's completely different given Penrith are trying to lock him up before anyone else can officially have a chance to make a play for him, leaving him no chance to test his market value or spend the next 6 months increasing his market value (including showcasing in Origin). Our players on the other hand had their offers on the table and knew the stakes at play. The attitude is different because the situation is entirely different. I doubt Gould helped things either by trying to lock him away for $600K a year over 5 years. That was a dumb low-ball play that is probably continuing to undermine Penrith's position in negotiations.

Penrith are certainly setting up for the possibility that Cleary could leave - making comments this early about "not stopping someone playing for their Dad, if that's what happens". If Cleary leaves for Tigers, Penrith management won't wear any grief from fans because the narrative has clearly been set.

If he goes to Roosters, then something else entirely and both Penrith and Tigers fans get annoyed.

And I don't see why Ivan wouldn't want to coach his son. Sure there would be added pressure or struggles if your son was a borderline performer, but all indicators are Nathan Cleary will be a consistent rep-level footballer; he hasn't had second- or third- year syndrome.

It's not as if Andrew Johns' or Darren Lockyer's dads would have had an issue picking their sons in a team every week.

This has an interesting contrast to Mitchell Pearce, because frequently young footballers of famous pedigree go to their family club - Mark Gasnier, Morris twins, Sironen boys, Hughes boys, Mat Rogers, Dean Young, Eric Grothe, Ryan Cross, David Furner, Will Hopoate, Bryce Cartwright etc. And if not, it's usually a geography thing - not really an issue for Sydney clubs.

He'd be crazy to come here just to play for his dad. They're building something special at Penrith.

So you would work under someone that sacked your parent.

Maybe, maybe not. Baseing a decision on your career path on something that happened to a family member may not be the smart choicr though.

I'm with you Gallagher, I think Cleary will want to bag a Premiership with Penrith before thinking about coming here. They are close to that Premiership, but it may not be this year. Penrith have been building for a long time and Cleary has been a big part of it. Now it's finally happening, why would you want to leave before pay dirt?

I tend to agree. if they win the GF this year he will sign with us (no team has gone back to back). if not he may see out his contract for 2019 and fingers crossed join us in 2020\. but a year is a long time in footy….

if your halves pairing is good then you may not have to pay overs for players and maybe even get some below Market value if they see a potential premiership team being assembled.

They'll do whatever they do but I think they'd be absolutely mad to release him for 2019 while they're in a premiership window and have him on contract at significant unders relative to his performances. I can only see them doing that in a Maloney/Moylan style swap and if Brooks keeps his form up they may try to make that play to extend their window.

In all honesty if we could only have one Cleary, I’d take Ivan. Don’t get me wrong, while 2 would be good none would be a nightmare
