Nathan Cleary

Penrith are certainly setting up for the possibility that Cleary could leave - making comments this early about "not stopping someone playing for their Dad, if that's what happens". If Cleary leaves for Tigers, Penrith management won't wear any grief from fans because the narrative has clearly been set.

If he goes to Roosters, then something else entirely and both Penrith and Tigers fans get annoyed.

And I don't see why Ivan wouldn't want to coach his son. Sure there would be added pressure or struggles if your son was a borderline performer, but all indicators are Nathan Cleary will be a consistent rep-level footballer; he hasn't had second- or third- year syndrome.

It's not as if Andrew Johns' or Darren Lockyer's dads would have had an issue picking their sons in a team every week.

This has an interesting contrast to Mitchell Pearce, because frequently young footballers of famous pedigree go to their family club - Mark Gasnier, Morris twins, Sironen boys, Hughes boys, Mat Rogers, Dean Young, Eric Grothe, Ryan Cross, David Furner, Will Hopoate, Bryce Cartwright etc. And if not, it's usually a geography thing - not really an issue for Sydney clubs.

Very well said

I think he will be here in 2019 i think that is part of the reason they want to keep the peach now and they have the cash for him when a few months ago they did not have

I hope we keep Brooks no matter what. H'e s been a little slower than Nathan to get there, but he is improving all the time and loves and wants to be a Wests Tiger.

Yep the Titans have already announced his signing for 3 years from 2019.

I hope Nathan doesnt enjoy playing with Teddy too much.

He will be THE hottest commodity on the market come next year, with an a$king price to boot

He'd be the biggest signing in the clubs history if it were to eventuate imo

Agreed to terms no contact registed with NRL yet has to be formally released from Penrith first before NRL register new contract with the Titans

Reports saying that Penrith SOO players have clauses in their contracts that triggers a bonus payment when selected also Kiwi players in the team also have the same clause if they get selected for NZ there could be up to 5 players. This all adds pressure to the Cap and if they happen to win the comp players will be looking for upgrades adding further pressure something will have to give at the Panthers

Penrith have been trying to extend his contract for over a year now like i have said before i think Nathan will be playing for the Tigers next year Gus has said in the past if he wants to leave he can and Gus knows he has alot of good young players he needs to tie up
And Nathans knows what he has at Penrith been there for a few years if you want to stay just sign the new contract

Yes and two of our ex players integrity was dragged through the mud on here for having contracts on the table for lengthy times leaving the club hanging while they made a decision as to what direction they wanted to go in.
Seems that same standard is not being held towards Nathan by Tigers fans cause we may be a good chance of getting him. Im sure Penrith fans and the club would like to know one way or another before they lose anymore players to other clubs if he does decide to walk.

It's completely different given Penrith are trying to lock him up before anyone else can officially have a chance to make a play for him, leaving him no chance to test his market value or spend the next 6 months increasing his market value (including showcasing in Origin). Our players on the other hand had their offers on the table and knew the stakes at play. The attitude is different because the situation is entirely different. I doubt Gould helped things either by trying to lock him away for $600K a year over 5 years. That was a dumb low-ball play that is probably continuing to undermine Penrith's position in negotiations.

Not completely different if you question his intent. Both our players were accused of never intending to sign with us once the decision was made public- regardless if there was truth in that or not.
If Cleary does leave.Penrith it would be fair to question his intent also given what we know - but I can guarantee his integrity wont be questioned, and nor should it. Penrith fans who are invested in him may feel a little different.

I think if we were to sign Cleary, we’d have to say goodbye to Brooks. It would be bad management to have Reynolds, Cleary, and Brooks all on big money for 2 positions.

The big difference at the moment between the Cleary situation and what happened at Wests last year is that Nathan still has a year to run on his contract. Of course he should test the market to see what he is worth. He is also entitled to see what this year brings as it may increase his value. I have a feeling he will decide his future well before the start of the 2019 season which will ensure all clubs involved in negotiations can sort their rosters for 2020 in plenty of time.

If we get Cleary a Brooks/Cleary halves combibation with Reynolds at hooker / bench player with Liddle would not be out of the question as Ivan said the players here at the moment assisting with the rebuild may not necessarily be there in the future. Also because off the love Reynolds and Woods have for their junior club the possibilty of a swap could not be ruled out ????

I would love Cleary here big time however my gut feeling is he wont come here and they are just talking this up to bring up his price elsewhere.. Would you want to play for your dad on big money and others think you are getting treated differently.. I hope i am 100% wrong..

Cleary situation is nothing like Moses, teddy and woods.

Penrith are trying to extend his contract a year out from end of term. Cleary is saying I would like to test my value and want the opportunity to increase it at the risk of lowering. He has done that by his SOO selection a win and solid performance will further increase his value

The three were already negotiating with other clubs as was their right to do but they were stalling us, using our offers as leverage rather than performance. We see how that has worked out for woods and Moses. Now they are trying to live up to their pay packets and the pressure is mounting.

Teddy was always worth what he was being offered and is being paid.

The father/son preferential treatment thing should not come into play here because of Nathans pure ability and Ivans even approach to everything.

Origin comes first as Nathan Cleary earmarks his 21st birthday as date to make call on future
Dean Ritchie, The Daily Telegraph
May 30, 2018 8:31pm

NSW halfback Nathan Cleary has earmarked his 21st birthday in November as the time to make the biggest decision of his life – sign a $1 million-a-year deal with Penrith, Wests Tigers or Sydney Roosters.

Cleary will push through a hectic State of Origin series before deciding whether to re-sign with the Panthers or join father Ivan at the Tigers.

The Roosters are the wildcard because Cooper Cronk’s two-year deal expires when Cleary comes off contract.

Nathan Cleary will focus on Origin before even contemplating his future.
Cleary will blow out the candles on November 14 – six weeks after potentially winning a premiership with the Panthers – before reaching his much-anticipated decision.

Ivan helped negotiate Nathan’s deal at Penrith, which expires after next season.

But once 21, Nathan will be old enough and mature enough to decide his own future.

“Nathan wants to wait until November to make this decision on his future,” Panthers general manager of football, Phil Gould, said on Wednesday night.

“He turns 21 in November.

“His father and manager talked him into this current contract with Panthers, which he signed two years ago.

“They said he could make the decision himself when he turns 21.

Cleary will wait until his 21st birthday to make a decision on where he signs.
“I respect that wish and I’m comfortable with the timeline. I’m comfortable with the whole process, actually.”

Ivan Cleary has repeatedly claimed he wants to coach his son but won’t push Nathan into joining Wests Tigers.

There is also speculation the Roosters might push for Ivan and Nathan to join the club as a package in 2020.

“It’s going to be a huge decision what he does,” Ivan said. “I’m sure he will make the right one.”

Asked if that decision would be to join his dad at Wests Tigers, Ivan said: “Not necessarily, wherever he thinks is best.

“But I would like to coach him one day, I’ve made that clear. Whenever that is, it is.

“A lot can happen in a week in footy, let alone a year.

“Now he has this whole Origin thing so he just needs to focus on that and everything will work itself out.”

Cleary has settled straight into the NSW playmaking role.

He looks calm, considered and composed.

“Nathan seems to take most things in his stride,” Ivan said.

“Nathan is a good student of the game and he listens well.

“Definitely his temperament is one of his strengths.

Cleary could take Cooper Cronk’s place at the Roosters in the future.
“Having said that, it will be a completely new level for him, like all those debutants.

“They will all be pretty nervous. They will all handle it differently. I guess we’ll find out.”

Ivan has no doubt his son will successfully step up into the fierce Origin arena.

“There are a lot of new faces there so it is exciting for every one of those guys, too,” Ivan said.

“I think he’ll go all right, I think he’ll handle it fine.

“Like a lot of people, I wasn’t sure how he would respond after coming back (from injury).

“I think after showing how he handled that, it’s fair to say he will do the same in Origin.

“Every time he has ever gone up a level throughout his young life he seems to have gone okay.

“It’s definitely a good thing that he has Jimmy Maloney alongside him. That will be a real help.”

All i take from that is we will be signing Cleary and Maloney in 2020..

Happy days..
