Nathan Cleary set to re-sign with Penrith Panthers according to Phil Gould
Star halfback Nathan Cleary is set to extend his stay in Penrith by re-signing with the club, according to Panthers General Manager Phil Gould.

Speaking on 100% Footy, Gould confirmed Cleary's intentions to re-sign with the club where he has played 58 career games, saying that a deal will be done "shortly".

To watch Phil Gould reveal the full Cleary story and much more, tune into 100% Footy tonight at 10.45pm on Nine

Cleary had originally set a November 1 date to discuss his contract with Penrith beyond the 2019 season, but appears to have sorted out his future soon after the Panthers were bundled out of the 2018 finals series.

Speculation about the 20-year-old's playing future reached fever-pitch during the 2018 season, following the dismissal of head coach Anthony Griffin, and Cleary's well-publicised desire to play under his father Ivan.

Gould confirmed Cleary's intentions to re-sign with the Penrith Panthers beyond the 2019 season
Following the Panthers' exit, Cleary mentioned that he did not want to mull about his future for too long.

"I don't want to drag it out," Cleary told News Corp on Sunday.

"I’ll have a couple of good days with the boys and do reviews and after that I’ll get down to talks and sort it out as quickly as possible.

"With that comes all the speculation and there is a lot of rubbish.

"If we can get it done as quickly as possible, I’ll be happy with that.

Speculation has been rife over whether the Panthers will lure Cleary's father Ivan away from the Wests Tigers

With Cleary's future secure in Penrith, the focus will now shift to the Panthers' permanent coaching position and whether the Panthers are able to lure Cleary's father Ivan back to Penrith.

However, Gould and Cleary have both thrown their support behind caretaker coach Cameron Ciraldo following the Panthers' semi-final defeat.

"I think everyone respects him and really likes him as a coach,"Cleary told News Corp.

"In the last three weeks we’ve shown a lot of improvement and it is a credit to him.

"I’ve always loved playing under Siro. He has kind of turned me into the player I am today."

Didn’t look that convincing to me.

He looked more convincing when he said Griffin was safe a month before he sacked him

Well that confirms it nathan sacked Griffin

If Phil Gould told you the sun had risen you would have to go outside and check so if Nathan makes his decision to sign with Penriff before Nov 1 he's effectively limiting himself to one offer and not testing the market though he probably knows what the WTs are offering

EXCLUSIVE

Penrith will secure Nathan Cleary's services at the club until at least the end of 2023, with the halfback agreeing to remain at the Panthers beyond the end of his current deal.

Cleary, who had been waiting until the end of the season to commit his future to Penrith, is expected to sit down with the club in the next 48 hours to sign a multi-year deal.

It is understood the Panthers will upgrade Cleary's final year of his current deal next year, while extending his contract for at least another four seasons on a deal that would make him the highest paid player in the club.

The NSW halfback was reluctant to walk way from his friends at Penrith, despite the appeal of linking with his father Ivan at the Wests Tigers.

The Tigers were unable to officially offer Cleary a contract for 2020 and beyond, with the 20-year-old declining the opportunity to hit the open market from November 1.

There's also a strong belief the Panthers are on the brink of winning a premiership, with caretaker coach Cameron Ciraldo likely to continue as head coach when the club returns for pre-season training in November.

Cleary has enjoyed a 58.6 per cent success rate since breaking into the NRL as a teenager in 2016, and has also helped NSW to a rare series victory in his maiden campaign with the Blues this year.

Penrith are yet to make an official statement on Cleary's future.

The Panthers bowed out of the finals last Friday night after a dramatic 21-20 loss to Cronulla.

Thank God. This circus can now end.

Re-sign Brooks and re-sign him now.

100% agree.
We really need to get behind brooks.
IMO he has much more natural talent than Nathan Cleary.
Give him a pack that will provide some go forward, and lay a platform.
1mil+ for Cleary is money better spent elsewhere.

Glad he has shown loyalty to Penrith and IMO a move to the Tigers was never a option.. Let’s hope the Monopoly money earmarked for Nathan can be directed towards fixing some real holes in our roster and of course extending Brooks

Yeah but usually when it's that definitively stated by a journo it's a leak shortly ahead of the actual announcement.

That’s exactly right! When the journalist goes into that much detail it’s usually correct.

It means that either nobody else is interested or he has no real interest in leaving. Or possibly both.

Oh good, well thanks for clearing that up I have such clarity as a result of your post.
I guess your in the dark just like the rest of us.

I never said otherwise. There seems to be some hostility there and I don't know why.

I thought you may of known a bit more about the topic you were commenting on. Your previous post about other clubs and Brooks was cryptic but gave me the impression you might know more. In which case I was hoping you’d share. But if you do not or can not I understand. It’s all good. I’m just an eager fan like the rest of us on here and probably need a new hobby.

No problem. I'm not trying to be cryptic, I genuinely don't know. I'm just shooting the breeze right now.
