Nathan Friend

Coast Titans hooking maestro Nathan Friend is expected to sign a new contract within two weeks – but it might not be with the Queensland club.

Titans coach John Cartwright said he wanted Friend to stay, but the player's manager Peter Whitehead said there were "a couple of offers on the table" from rival clubs, which he declined to name.

"Nathan is a player that moves under the radar because he doesn't seek the limelight," Whitehead said. "But a lot of clubs know what he's capable of and would love the opportunity to pick him up.

"You only have to look at the problems the Titans have been having without him for the past four weeks to see what he's worth."

Turning 30 just a month ago, Friend knows this is probably his last deal. He would like at least two years, with an option, and his preference is to stay with Gold Coast, but a move elsewhere in the NRL is also being considered.

"I've got to take the best option for me and my family. And whether it's here I'm not quite sure," said Friend, who got his start with Brisbane Broncos in 2002 before four years with Melbourne Storm.

Friend underwent his second shoulder reconstruction during the off-season and was named yesterday to face North Queensland Cowboys on Friday night. Tuesday he said there were no nerves, just pure excitement, to finally play his first match of the season.

"It's been pretty frustrating," he said. "I've copped a bit of a pounding at training to complete all the (contact) tests that are required to make sure it's stable and good to go. You can never simulate a game of 40-something full-on contacts, but I'm pretty confident."

Cartwright named Riley Brown on a five-man bench as he's unlikely to get 80 minutes out of Friend. "He's been a long time out of the game. He played no trials and has only really been in contact work the last three weeks," Cartwright said. "It wouldn't be fair to mount any pressure on him. But I know his make-up and know what he brings to the team."

Even though Easter is around the corner, Friend does not want to be seen as some kind of Messiah who can heal the Titans' early season troubles. They have been winless after three rounds and with 40 seconds left in their game against Canberra Raiders last weekend were staring down the barrel of another loss, until pulling out a golden-point miracle win.

He will be wanting to sign a retirement contract and to only have him as a back up hooker would be not worth the money imo . However in saying that I wish him the best of luck . He is a bloody good footballer and outside the Tigers would be one of my favourite players to watch . He will make a huge difference to Titans being back and he is the heart and soul of that side and they have no idea what they will be losing if they let him go . That suits me fine coz I don't like the Titans much . Like there facilities and their fans though . Getting off point good luck Nathan

Wonder who would sign him up? How many years is Berrigans contract at the Warriors?

Most clubs have a decent hooker, so unless it were Newcastle, Cronulla or Parramatta I couldn't imagine where he'd finish up?

newcastle have de-gois hes highly rated there id say cronulla

I rate De Gois too Spud, but I honestly think Friend is better, and I reckon Tinkler will be thinking the same since he couldn't snare Ennis back.

Nathan Friend is HUGELY underrated player and truely is the heart and soul of the Titans. I think that Titans recent form slump has been laregly due to him being injured and they will return to their winning ways as he comes back into their side. Personally I think there are only about three better hookers then him in the NRL.

Friend is a gun, IMO he is 3rd best hooker in the comp, we dont need him, we have a champion hooker. Id say Canberra is another who could do with him.
Like others have said under rated, but not by the knowledge fans around the traps. Hope he gets what he is worth (plenty)

I wouldn't say he is gun but he is a solid player.
Not a fan personally and I expect to see him either re-sign with the Titans or off the NZ or Canberra.
Word is NZ are willing to drop Seymour, Hohaia, Berrigan & Heremaia… Promote Shaun Johnson to full time halfback, rightly so... and have Maloney @ 5/8.
Friend to cover hooker with Mara as back up.
Sounds good for them.

3rd best hooker in the NRL? That is a massive statement Goose… I think I agree more with Demps assessment.

friend is an outstanding player. I believe him to be the best defensive hooker in the game, and he is very good at setting the marker and getting his forwards across the gain line (smith and him i believe to be the best in the game at this), he doesn't quite have the skills of a farah or smith, but I believe him to be far superior to the next tier of Ennis, Balin, Payne, Fien etc…..

Im a huge fan of his work, very underrated. This weekend watch how well he sets the marker which gives his forwards a huge advantage all day.

I'm not sure who is after him but I would of thought Parra would be a team that needs him.
They struggled last year without Kingston.
I don't think Canberra will want him as they have Waddell who I rate highly and Buttress, Cronulla have Aiton and Morris so they wont want another hooker on their roster either.
I think most other clubs are happy with their hookers but it depends on whether some are planning to let their hooker go.

And Flanagan. All three are average hookers. They should be definitely targeting Friend.

Theres an article in the SMH i think, about hes set to announce he will be leaving the gold coast to take up a 3 year contract with the NZ Warriors

I'd have hime 4th behind Smith, Farah and Luke…who are all internationals. He's the best of the next.

I agree with Goose that he is by head and shoulders the best defensive hooker in the game. He has a beautiful technique that smashes guys twice his size.

One of the best (maybe the best) defensive hooker, but most teams want a attacking hooker who can act as a playmaker as well..though I don't like Friend mostly because of his punch- up with Farah!
