New coach.. Who should we target?

No matter which way you look at it, Bennett is a big upgrade on Cleary. If this does indeed come off it is a massive coup for the club on multiple levels. And if he brings a couple of Broncos with him…even better.

100%.

Despite what has happened, I still don't believe Cleary is a poor coach. He did well with an ordinary squad this year.

However, Bennett will bring clout and attract money and players. If we offer him a decent length contract and he brings about sustained success (even without a GF win, if we are running into week 2 or 3 of the finals by the end of his tenure,) he will leave us in a better position than what he found us and we will be well placed for the future.

It could actually all be coming together:

We sign Bennett
he brings/attracts some top line first graders & further develops our current squad
more sponsorship $$
CoE is built

Dare to dream!

Absolutely. Overnight we become a more attractive proposition to players, sponsors etc.

can you guys honestly see a "caretaker" coach @ Penrith for 3 years?

i cannot

Nope, if he's signed with Penrith from 2021, he will leave before the beginning the 2019 season.

And if he wants to go prior to the 2019 season, he'll either have to forego his contract or Penrith will have to pay financial compo to release him early.

Ok then, I'm dreaming but usually with the Tigers it manages to become a nightmare. He's hoping you are right.

I'm afraid for Wayne Bennett.
He turns 69 in January … coaching the Tigers could be the death of him.

We need a Waynism to help replace our bus slogan.
Hmm, any suggestions?
I like the one above. A train is superior to a bus in all ways.

Don't let the music die in you or the Man in the Mirror …....

Are they good reads Happy?

Don't let the music die in you was pretty good

Didn't know they released a dot-to-dot version. Go Queensland!

Wayne's books would just be re-hashed Jack Gibson and/or Vince Lombardi quotes for certain.

You miss understood the lol. I was laughing at the comment before me because it was a witty response, I wasn’t dissing your original comment.
What you just mentioned is along what I was thinking, apart from me backing Cleary and losing I don’t get that part. I never backed Cleary, only chose to not get all animated about moving him on before we knew anything other than media speculation.
Tonight is actually the first time it’s been confirmed that Ivan will not be here in 2021\. Whether we offered him the extension who knows? Some of the more informed posters may be able to fill out some of the blanks?
Im hoping Brisbane pay out part or all of the remainder of Wayne’s contract which will help us. The

Actually it hasn't been confirmed yet… Still speculation

I’m hearing Bennett deal was done some time ago with Wayne directly not his manager. Bennett has already been offered a payout of his contract to leave the Broncos.
Paul White wants him out and the board want to reward him for his service.

Tigers are awaiting full payout of Clearys contract from Panthers of 1.2m.

Penrith get Cleary for the next 2 years at 600k p.a. his Tigers value. Panthers are paying 1m a season from 2021\. Panthers saving 400k a year for the first two years or 800k over first two years. Therefore prepared to payout Tigers 1.2m as they are only down 400k.

It makes a lot of sense to me and it looks like we get Wayne’s total contract value subsidised by 1.2m. If it’s 3 years it’s 400k pa which is good business.

None of your maths adds up. If Panthers are paying the Tigers $1.2 (which I doubt) and they pay Cleary $ 600 pa for two years, isnt it costing Panthers $2.4M for those two years? Hardly saving money.

Also factor in the cost of paying out the former coach and paying Ciraldo. I have read an article where Cleary's management company denies he wants out (early). No doubt a lot of positioning underway to maximise/minimise payouts.

You are right P&C

Of course Cleary & Penrith are going to say they are happy to wait until 2021\. That way Tigers are painted into a corner, there willbe ZERO compensation from Penrith and in fact I could see a case where Tigers would have to pay Cleary out to have him go. Tigers will get nothing out of Penrith, IMO it will be offered that he will leave for "free". I wouldnt mind betting that this is where the rumours of Penrith "paying out" Clearys contract come from. They are not going to pay Tigers anything, they will just pay Cleary what he was going to get anyway.

In that case it's shaping up to be a game of chicken. How long can we make Penrith wait? No way they are wanting to start the season with Ciraldo. That's a Gus bluff.

As long as Wayne thinks with his big head and not his little head, he's the best coach for the job given the circumstances.

Very high takes game of chicken, that the Tigers will probably lose. How long can we make Penrith wait? How long could we make Bennett/Brisbane wait? Remember Cleary & Bennett share the same management. I cant see the Tigers winning this one. Might be best to cut losses and just make it happen.
