Next Big Signing?

Its an interesting note you make there Gary. Outside of the Stewart brothers, Watmough, King, Kite, Matai, David & Tony Williams and maybe Matt Ballin, who else in that side would be on more than $150,000 a year?

Fair point Bogan. I am basing my thought on market value, not what Manly have actually paid for those pretty average first graders.

saw matt utai having coffee with lote tuquri in fivedock yesterday (just down the road from tigers training in concord).
Dont know how much it can be read into though. Does anyone know if tigers trained yesterday?

Ive heard Utai is on board next yr as well mate. Even if were only giving him $60-70k wouldnt that have been better spent topping up Brown and Daniela and keeping other teams at bay. Our depth is good without Utai.

since youve heard it im gonna come out and confirm it because my dad went and spoke to him and he said he was on board for this year (too scared too confirm it earlier as ive been hammered for previous rumours ive heard) but anyways hope his still got it. He did also say that tuiaki was ready to go for this season, but then again theyve been saying that for a while now. its interesting because if tuiaki is fit to go then what happens to ryan, daniella, brown, utai, ayshford, mckinnon and moltzen who are all fighting for two postions. going to be a very interesting round one selection process…

Why would you top-up extant contracts????? You are clearly not a businessman!!

They are already contracted for 2011 at an agreed price - and if we decide to keep them beyond this year - that money (including any upgrades) will come out of our 2012 cap!!

Whatever we may spend on a depth signing is irrelevant to the retention of those two beyond 2011!!!

What we pay them this year has no bearing on negotiation of new contracts - and if they want more - they can ask for it then!!

I don't consider Ayshford to be fighting for a position - he is the incumbent right centre - played great in the finals & will get first crack if fit!!

The others are fighting to displace him!

(And McKinnon is not even in the running for centre or wing - he is a specialist fullback fullstop!!)

I'm pretty sure you can nullify and replace a contract if parties agree and bring money forward into this year's cap if any contracts are weighted toward the back-end. With Daniella and Brown, that obviously isn't the case since they expire in 2011 so there is no trailing money to bring forward. So, I'm guessing that's your point Redemption.

That aside, I think the real reason why they didn't do that with anyone is because of the tier 1 (top 25), tier 2 system. I'm guessing our Tier 1 is full, so anyone in the top 25 can't be upgraded. Utai would have been in the tier 2, same with Riddell.

Really, it doesn't really waste our cap at all. Would have preferred to keep Lazarus tho in tier 2\. At least he did some good charity work for his cash.

That was my point mate! The two referred contracts expire and are up for re-negotiation at season's end - and there is no commercial reason to upgrade the current contracts!

But you are also right that Utai would only be on a 2nd tier contract with no impact on the top-tier cap!

…well I hope to god that's the case! Utai should not be a top 25\. 😛ray:

Geez, I wish we had got riddell now on the same terms. Could have proven far more useful than I think Utai will.

There's no way he's top 25, not with how he finished his last stint in the NRL and the length of time he's been out. He'll be turning out for Balmain or Wests and if he can somehow recapture some form, well then he'll be a depth option in the event of injuries.

If the latest reports about Tuiaki being on track to play are correct, then we're worrying about nothing as the Tigers still have the likes of Ryan, Latu, Daniela, Brown who can all handle wing easily. Utai would be ranked 5th out of that lot.

I agree willow but why is he given straight up shot at training with first grade when juniors are overlooked?

Good way to alienate the juniors they spend so much time nurturing.

Mate I don't know. I don't know why the Tigers signed him, I for one think they have enough depth for the wings if Tuiaki cannot play this season. Have they signed him to play wing or is he depth for elsewhere? Could he perhaps play hooker? He's not lightning quick and won't score you a long distance try but with his build and strength, he could be value out of dummyhalf…

I don't know, I'm stumped as to why the Tigers felt they needed to sign him. Riddell was certainly going to be backup for Farah...Could Utai fit the bill instead?

I would even put the 3 young wingers we signed ahead of him. Surely it must be something along the lines that you are thinking willow. I'm pretty sure he was playing second row with the dooooggies before he left. Backup forward/hooker maybe? That said, we have awesome stocks in the forwards. Must be hooker….
