Nightclubs and Stomping Grounds

Off season and i'm bored and had a few drinks. I'm now in my late 60s and still a bit of a lad. Still go to the pub on friday nights to see the local bands although that has been a bit of a night mare in 2020. But back in my heyday in the 70s and 80s i used to frequent a few iconic nightclubs/pubs. I've seen Radio Birdman at The Funhouse in Taylor Square, AC/DC at The Family Inn at Rydalmere and Rose Tattoo at the Bondi Lifesaver. When i lived in Sydney i used to also regularly go to War And Peace, Trade Union Club. Plus i would be off to see any overseas bands such as Deep Purple, Free, CCR, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull whenever they came out. In the 90s i moved to the Gold Coast and my hangouts were the Patch at Coolangatta and the Playroom. I saw The Ramones at the Playroom. I'm saddened by the fact that most of these venues no longer exist and the days of seeing big name bands outside of arenas is long gone.

Saw chisel, mentals, angels at the lifesaver and astra hotel among others... Was very young and hazy daze hard to remember now..
Rydalmere was a good pub for bands saw Ian Gillan there and at punchbowl what's now Croatian club forget the name the pub was

Good days Ink - the Lifesaver was a cracker of a venue. I notice Cold Chisel have a live recording out of a show at the Lifesaver in 1980.

Sundowner Hotel

My best mate parents moved to Hurstville and we would drive down from Bathurst every second weekend, spent plenty of time and heaps of cash at the Sea Breeze hotel near Tom Uglys.
Don't remember very much about it as we were always smashed.

The Bridge Hotel opposite Balmain Leagues was my local in the late 80s and 90’s for late night venue on Friday and Saturdays. Great local and overseas bands. Still going

The PA club,Motor CLUB,,Manderin CLUB,Balmain Tennis Club,Souths Seniors,Souths JUNIORS,Balmain Leagues,Casino at Balmain,Forbes CLUB,24 hr Poker game at over service station at Redfern,Balmain RSL.West Leagues at Ashfield, TO name just a few.

Sundowner hotel resident singer was JR known as John Rowles,I was 16 at the time.Later was also a member of Penrith Leagues and Drummoyne sailing club and Drummoyne rowers. They were the days.

I’ve witnessed many a great gig at the Annandale hotel, Metro, Gaelic Club, Narrabeen rsl, Newtown social club, the factory, etc. Mainly saw a lot of fine Aussie bands throughout the 90s to now, You Am I, Jebediah, the Vines, Powderfinger, Tumbleweed, some are still going thankfully.

Raceview tavern in Ipswich used to get a few bands ...Saw the Angels there twice ......Festival Hall used to get some bands but was primarily for Boxing ...Dad took me a few times in the early 80's to watch fights ....remember through a Radio promotion on FM 104 paying a $1.04 to see Johnny Diesel and the Injectors at Festival Hall .....QE2 saw Springsteen and Dire Straits

Rosie's Tavern was a Brisbane hangout ...met a few famous people there over the years ......Mark Waugh and Mo Matthews the night before a Test ...the Blakeney twins from Wombat and Neighbours and the Broncos drank at the Underground

As hard as it is to admit the best place to see a live band in Brissy in my day was Easts Leagues Club...I think I saw the Pogues 3 times there ...can remember seeing George Thorogood there and my biggest claim to fame musically playing piano with Bad Habits Billy Fields at the Kenmore tavern Private bar with Jungle Jim Ehrmann

Bathurst Tiger the Seabreeze was a great pub sadly they knocked it down many moons ago and built multi million $ units. Saw a lot of bands at Sylvania pub about a km south of the Seabreeze . Midnight Oil, Rose Tatoo Jimmy and the boys, Angels great era for young people back then .

Frequented many of these myself and saw a lot of those bands. Add the Landsdowne, Vic on the park, Sandringham Hotel.

The Civic Hotel in the City. Every night a different act. Anne Kirkpatrick on Mondays, Flowers (Icehouse) on Tuesdays Misex Wednesdays Oils Thursdays Cold Chisel Fridays all for a $1 cover charge. Chisels cost $2 but only played 2 sets. We rang Double Jay to complain they said they were a big band now with an Album out so didn't have to play more than 2 sets.

For live Music, the Bridge Hotel opposite the old Balmain Leagues club....last renovated in the 70's and still going strong.

Have seen some good bands there but mainly used to go there just cause it was open late.

Growing up in Wollongong I spent a lot of time at the Grand Hotel, The Patch, the North Gong, Collies, The Harp etc. Also Shellharbour Workers, Gerringong Pub, Headlands Hotel, Scarborough pub..... Great times and great bands throughout the 80s and early 90s

Used to go upstairs at the Civic many years ago and always gauged how good a night I had on whether I woke up in Central Lock up or not.
