Had another look through and you are right about the Sharks line-up too.

Have we got a breakdown of when the Tigers actually play ??

Fox just has the complete time frame of when it is , no game breakdown

Hadn't really thought of it til I read Ava's column, but it seems like JT is using the 9s as a defensive test/lesson for the forwards.
Ava mentioned spacing in defence and general field awareness as his focuses for the tournament, and with our defensive deficiencies in the middle last year it would be a real area of concern.

Looking at it this way, he's thrown all the young forwards in the deep end of a small man's game, and if we are to make any sort of progress in the tournament, or at least take anything out of it, it would be on outstanding middle defence and consistent second phase play.

May be giving him too much credit but if things work out then we could be leaving Auckland with something more valuable than the prize money.

Good post Vanilla.

Farah would never have played the 9s. This tournament is made for exciting young players to make their debuts, such as Cherrington.

The problem with our squad is the imbalance. One playmaker and too many slow forwards. If Taylor is using the 9s as a training exercise for the big guys to practice their positioning, reading the play and scrambling defence then that's something at least.

Naming slow props is not what the 9s are for though. Players like Akauola are fine, as they are athletic. When you only do 1-2 hit ups with forwards a set you don't need that many pigs in the engine room. You need fast second rowers, centres and wingers to spot a gap and burst through and score.

Unless those big slow forwards can offload and create chances for the quick men

The problem will be defensively , anyone who thinks JT will learn anything defensively by watching them defend in the 9's is kidding themselves

Would be like seeing what you will learn about a horse you want to win the Melbourne Cup by sticking it in 1000m sprint

Two of our biggest downfalls in defense last year was fast men around the ruck and edge defense. More often than not, I actually believe we won the ARM and the wrestle.

You make a good point re JT, vanilla.

Lack of speed and awareness has been a major issue for us. I've predicted an oppositions line break so many times- they Always seem to be aware but our defense does not.

I'm not suggesting JT is using to learn about our forwards, more so that our forwards will learn how to cope with the smaller blokes up the middle when they're tired. We might lose every game 40-0 but if there's even the slightest improvement in middle defence and defensive awareness then that may as well be a win for us.

I guess more than anything it seems like the focus will be on taking responsibility for your man in defence and making those extra efforts to shut the play down. Considering some of our lazy efforts around the ruck last year (and Ava and Sue were pretty culpable in many of those) I think we have a real opportunity for growth in an environment that would be much harder to replicate on a training paddock.

The thing that impresses me about Ava is the fact he wasn't lazy in the middle defensively.

Sue had his moments but Ava was pretty good in this regard for a young Islander front rower

Top tryscorer for the tournament.

Naqaima $51
Simona $81
Lawrence $101.

Good value if we can sneak into the playoffs

the top try scorer will probably have to play at least the semis (or whatever the 2 games before the GF are called)

unless they fluke a couple of doubles and maybe a hattrick in the group stages.
