Is that paint? You may wanna paint strip it first. But yeah as I said orbital sanders for that. A belt will go through it.
Oh and god gave your Mrs two very good sanders on the end of each arm. Start at 120 then 180, 280ish. Then varnish or lacquer and sand between each off at least three coats with even fine paper say 340 and 400.
There’s a lot of work there, elbow grease work too, but should look great.
Follow the tin instructions.

Hey Ink, between sanding (before you start lacquering), you need to “raise the grain”.
After you have sanded the piece, you need to wipe it down with a wet cloth. This will clean the sanding dust out of the pores and make them swell up a bit, then the pores will dry and stay up. Then you go with a finer sandpaper and sand the whole piece again, and then raise the grain again. You should sand at least three times with raising the grain twice, In between each sand.
Then when lacquering you do the same thing but just a damp cloth to clean the dust of but not so wet that it will penetrate.
