Back in 1966, Mal and Mike Leyland, set off from Steep Point in Western Australia to Cape Byron in New South Wales, it was the first time Australia had been crossed from West to East by car.
This was documented in 'Wheels Across a Wilderness' the film they made about the crossing

The brothers later had their show 'Ask the Leyland Brothers', airing from 1976 to 1984, the program brought the sights of the Australian outback into the living rooms of people across the nation

The 1956 Land Rover Series 1, one of the two original cars used in the West-East crossing is on display in the National Motor Museum.
