And because today is Remembrance Day .....
Four comedy legends who knew duty before fame
Norman Wisdom – Served from 1930 to 1946 with the 10th Royal Hussars and later the Royal Corps of Signals. Stationed in India and the Middle East, he became the Army’s flyweight boxing champion and began performing for troops — discovering the comic timing that would make him a star.
Spike Milligan – Gunner with the 56th Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery. He fought in North Africa and Italy and was seriously wounded at Monte Cassino. His experiences — tragic, absurd and surreal — later inspired The Goon Show and his wartime memoir Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall.
Peter Sellers – Joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 and toured with the RAF Gang Show across Britain, India, Ceylon and Burma. Those years entertaining servicemen shaped his skill for mimicry and character work that later defined The Goon Show and The Pink Panther.
John Le Mesurier – Served as a captain in the Royal Tank Regiment and the Army Film and Photographic Unit, posted to India during the war. His quiet authority and warmth, seen years later in Dad’s Army, reflected the discipline and dignity he carried from his service.
They served, endured and sacrificed — and when peace returned, they helped Britain smile again.
