When Sydney Schoolchildren Had to Hide in Trenches — 1942!
😨

Imagine going to school knowing you might have to hide underground before the day was over.
During World War II, fears of Japanese air raids transformed Sydney's schoolyards. Deep zigzag trenches were dug into playgrounds, and children practised rushing into them whenever air-raid warnings sounded.

At schools such as Leichhardt Public School, emergency drills became part of everyday life. Some trenches even filled with muddy water after heavy rain.

For Sydney's children, school wasn't just about reading and writing anymore — it was also about preparing for war.
