In the days prior to calculators, large companies such as banks, insurance companies and private corporations, hired people to run adding machines all day, checking the figures that would be entered in the General Ledger.
The adding machines were called comptometers and the job entailed adding up figures, processing invoices and acting as a corporate version of a cash register.
Apparently the noise in the place was phenomenal, the clickity clack of those machines was incredible.
The job required enormous concentration and wasn’t well paid.
Comptometers were eventually phased out after computers. Another job that no longer exists these days.
