Elderly women in South Korea still dive for a living—without breathing tanks.
They are the *haenyeo*, or “sea women,” of Jeju Island. Some continue this demanding work into their 70s and even 80s, diving to the ocean floor to collect abalone, sea urchins, seaweed, and other marine life.
Some descend as deep as 33 feet (10 meters), holding their breath for about a minute at a time. When they return to the surface, they release their breath with a distinctive whistling sound.
Their skills are built on decades of experience.
They know the underwater terrain, recognize marine life, and understand the changing conditions of the sea. This knowledge is passed down to younger generations, while local fishing cooperatives help manage harvesting practices.

For generations, haenyeo have supported their families and played an important economic and social role in Jeju’s communities.

In 2016, UNESCO recognized their diving culture as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Today, this centuries-old tradition continues, although the diving population is aging and fewer young women are entering the profession.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Vale Marjorie Masterton, beloved wife of Jim Masterton, co-founder of the Masterton Group and a cherished member of the Masterton family.

Mrs Masterton passed away peacefully at the age of 96, surrounded by her loving family.
Alongside Jim, Marjorie played an instrumental role in establishing the foundations of the Masterton Group, helping build a company that has supported tens of thousands of Australian families on their journey to home ownership.

Her dedication, strength and commitment to family helped shape the values that continue to guide our company today. Her remarkable contribution will forever remain part of the Masterton legacy.
Above all, Marjorie will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and the heart of her family.

Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Masterton family during this difficult time.
Her legacy will live on through the family, the company and the generations she helped inspire.

Rest in peace, Mrs Masterton.

Sydney Destroyed This Magnificent Theatre Despite Public Protests!
🏛️

Opened in 1928 on George Street, Sydney's Regent Theatre was once one of the city's grandest entertainment venues. Its spectacular interiors, marble staircases and luxurious decorations made a night at the movies an unforgettable experience.

But after closing in 1984, the Regent became the centre of a bitter heritage battle. Despite preservation campaigns and public protests, its heritage protection was lifted and demolition began in 1988.

A magnificent piece of Sydney's entertainment history disappeared.
