Storm were never going to lose. I don’t think they can go all the way, but who knows. They were missing a few. They’ll finish in the top 4 though...as usual.

Yeah mate, agree.
Class team regardless of player ins and outs.

That right edge though is pretty mediocre. Jennings and Smith. Very unlike Melbourne. Not sure how Jennings got picked ahead of Lumelume. Him and Brenko are a better combo.

As many have noted here there is a question mark over the quality of the Souths forward pack. They were dominated in the first 20 and it was too far back from there. Now Burgess out for a period.

It's a good pack, they just weren't in it to start. Once they woke up they held their own against Melbourne. They were shell shocked by the pace of storm out of the gates I reckon

Will be interesting to see, I thought Storm's errors let them back in.

Souths made a heap of errors too. Was a fun game though overall enjoyed watching it

I thought the ref ruined the game when he awarded a penalty to Melbourne for Gagai's tackle on Hughs
He was committed and it was harmless and absolutely no malice in it
It's not like he came in 2 seconds later
If Gagai didn't tackle him he could have run through
What was he ment to do stand back and watch it
It gave Melbourne an 8 point lead and not enough time left for Souths
With a 6 point lead the game was still interesting
I thought that penalty was SOFT
It took the wind out of souths sails

The kicker was in the air and Gagai made contact and wrapped his arms around his legs. No malice by Gagai and first contact was above the waist but he does grab the legs and tuck his arms around them.

Pretty straight forward penalty.

Going to be a very long season for people if this the kind of refs call they blow up about. There will be actual stuff ups, wait for them to blow up. Save your energy.

Yes Hughs was in the air
Gagais timing was out by a split second
His arms Brushed Hughs
**There was no actual grab of the legs unless I missed something**
If Gagai pulls his arms away then all of a sudden its a shoulder charge and he gets a few weeks
You damned if you do and your damned if you don't in that situation
Just my opinion

Find a replay, both his hands/arms wrap or tuck around the legs. Just one of those unfortunate ones theyll pull up 9 out of 10 times.

Its not really relevant to last nights penalty, but the way refs treat tackling the kicker is a pet hate of mine.

The refs now use an interpretation that as long as the tackler "holds" the kicker or wraps them up, its ok to grab him after he kicks. As a result the defensive team do it EVERY time, intentionally and it prevents a kicker running through to put players onside. Its a tactic now.

It's a long season. Nico Hynes will get a shot or two there as well

As for the Gagai penalty, it's really tough. You aren't allowed to tackle a kicker in mid-air so it's penalty so maybe the timing was a little off? But if he had waited longer, Reynolds could've run around him (unlikely but still possible). Let's see how consistent they are with these.

Geez but if Souths didn't shoot themselves in the foot!... I tipped a Bunnies win figuring their backsline moves would expose Jennings and Reimus Smith.

The six again didn't seemed to be policed in last night's game there were a number of times six again could have been awarded but weren't it will be interesting to see how other games are managed over the weekend

Finally Benji Marshall hits someone in a tackle and leave the guy on the ground hurt
Only problem is it was his Team mate Burgess
Marshall landed on him on the tackle

Souths' Burgess cleared of serious injury

Tom Burgess has thanked fans for their support following his injury against the Storm on Thursday.

Tom Burgess has been released from hospital to return home with South Sydney after being cleared of serious injury in the NRL season-opener against Melbourne.

Burgess had to be stretchered from the field late in the 26-18 loss, and was taken to hospital for precautionary x-rays after Benji Marshall landed on him in a tackle.

Here is a photo from the tackle
Notice how close the players are and at full speed
Hughes still has his foot planted on the ground and Gagai is so close to tackling him
Does the ref expect Gagai to stop
Are they telling the players to let the kicker get his kick away without and pressure
![Screenshot_20210312-131710_Gallery.jpg](/assets/uploads/files/1615519292014-screenshot_20210312-131710_gallery.jpg)
2 tenths of a second at full pace and he is on him
In the end there was absolutely no harm done and play should have went on in my opinion

Also, were Souths the only team guilty of forward passes last night? They were the only team pulled up for them. Refs are still hometown-Harry's this season by the looks of it. The more things change the more they stay the same in the good ol' NRL.

Just before Munster scored the first try, there was a 6 again awarded.
I think it was Jayden Sua who did the tackle.
It was a textbook tackle, round the legs perfect example of how your taught as a young lad.
He probably held on for 2 seconds, not even.any less than that and all his team would of been offside.the tackle was barley completed, and storm were awarded a 6 again.
I couldn’t help but think how fast does the NRL want the game, and there is zero reward for a good safe tackle.
Bit of a rant,just something I noticed early on.✌🏼

Any other team they would be useless, Melbourne just make it work.

And yet, just like our trial match, they give Asofa-Solomona 15mins to get the off-load away.

Every advantage on the field lays with the attacking side.

I am sure I saw a few more wresting moves making their debut last night.

There was the usual arm pulling, forearms across throats and knees into pressure points etc that we have come to expect from Melbourne.

The new one I saw a couple of times was one arm on the side of the neck applying pressure one way while the other arm (usually forearm) was on the other side above the ear applying pressure in the other direction.

I was going to say they will have to break someones neck before they stop, but they already have and are as bad as ever.

If PVL really wanted to improve the game he would stop with the stupid changes such as 6 again and abolishing scrums and penalise and suspend the wrestle and head contact out of the game.

Couldn't be much worse than Cook and certainly Reynolds.

Cook is overrated

Only round 1 and he's already Cooked.

Is it just me or were Melbourne blatantly slowing down the ruck by having their arms on the ball. They were doing it all game.
