LAME. What a lame comeback, considering you've written about 12 posts in here already and visited this thread at least 4 times today.

But the TLDR part is I think you are wrong and you've missed the point, because the NRL are not advertising to your regular white male supporter. Also, the NRL is politicised, don't fool yourself.

For many years USA politics labelled the white male as the enemy and giving it impetus was none other than the Democrats who started the KKK. It has definitely hit Aussie shores now, but never thought I would see such racism here? There is nothing wrong with being a white male.. or any other colour for that matter or indeed any other sex.
☹️

In fairness, I can’t see the relevance of someones sexual preference or culture to the talent they have in the game. Can’t we watch the spectacle rather than have politics shoved down our throat all the time…I just think people want a place they can go to get away from all the different opinions and just be brought together by something they have in common - the great game of Rugby League.

Honestly I think you've totally missed the point.

The NRL are not really making season 2020 ads to cater to the average white male of their core demographic. Nobody on here and nobody reading the back pages of the SMH or DT, or logged into the NRL website, fails to be aware that there is a NRL 2020 season coming up soon, nor that it involves footballers tackling each other. The NRL does not need to advertise to its core market, but it does show little snippets of supporter bases, some Tigers on the hill at LO etc. Just little snippets to whet the appetite of the existing supporter.

No, the NRL ads are primarily to appeal to the non-core rugby league followers - women, minorities, immigrants, children. The people who don't really follow NRL, who wouldn't know that the new season is starting. The ads are intentionally showing diversity and emphasising inclusiveness and rights of minorities - they are appealing to those who don't feel part of the "average" rugby league supporter base. Yeah it might be a bit heavy-handed in that regards, but there are plenty of morons out there and sometimes it doesn't pay to be subtle or clever.

If you want an ad about just big boofheads tackling each other and doing sit-ups, then transport yourself back to the 1980s and watch those old ads.

And I think you are also hugely misguided to think that the NRL is not and should never be politicised. There is literally no large organisation in this country that doesn't have some form of politicisation, whether it's because they are publicly-owned, dealing with shareholders or trying to appear to advertisers. The motive that has the NRL putting female footballers and Aboriginals front and centre in ads is the same motive that has the Rugby Union banning Izzy Folau, or AFL banning racist fans, or cricket suspending ball tamperers - it's all about maintaining the reputation of your brand. It's the same motive that had the NRL hiring Macklemore, or starting women's football, or publicly supporting same-sex marriage, or initiating women's round or running the All Stars game.

Do you think the NRL hosts the All-Stars game for some altruistic rationale, or some power-broker at Foxtel demands it, or because it pulls huge audiences? Hell no, it's 100% about recognition of a small but core contingent of the NRL's workforce (~12% indigenous), appealing to future indigenous juniors and smart business for brand management.

I scrolled down and saw an essay...not going to read it. Sorry mate. Too long

>I don’t know successful the NRL will be in trying to cater to this PC demographic though and lure in new fans, because as soon as new people start to take an interest they will see the blatant hypocrisies within the NRL.
Its not an equal competition. There is blatant favouritism engrained in the system, with morons like Greenburg making up the rules as he goes, leaving himself open backdoors to scuffle back in, which detracts from the whole facade they are trying to pull.

I don't think the new or casual supporters think about that at all. And it's not a "PC demographic". They aren't trying to sell football to Aboriginal vegan lesbians. The NRL are simply trying to be on top of public sentiment. There's nothing inherently PC about showing pics of two women kissing or some fella with an aboriginal flag on his shoulders; it's just a sample of actual society. Political correctness is about avoiding exclusionary or insulting messaging, not the reverse, which in this case is an advertisement of inclusiveness.

You look at the current ad Google is running on TV, where the lady asks her Google Assistant to show her photos from her wedding day - wedding to her wife. No different to the NRL; Google aren't out there specifically to sell phones to lesbians. They are trying to appeal to society-wide sentiment.

Fundamentally, NRL came from very white very lower and middle class upbringing. Rugby League has, for a very long time, had the reputation of being for boofheaded blokes who like to drink beer and see biffo. That may actually be true, and if so, the NRL doesn't have to advertise to the beer-swilling boofheads - they are already on-side. But the NRL very certainly will want to move its brand away from that "boofhead" reputation, to be seen as an inclusive and fair code for players and supporters. It sells the brand.

Again, an ad isn't going to change your opinion of whether or not there is default favouritism in the league, or whether or not you like Greenberg.

Thank you for your considered response. I respect the thought and effort that went into it. And very well articulated.

I think your interpretation on the desired effect of the ad is probably pretty spot on. I would like there to be more actual footy in the ad, but you're right it may not be needed for the audience they are aiming to.

I am concerned that even aiming to new fans, their hollowness will be seen through, and they should focus on fixing the problems in-house as a priority.

For the longevity sake of our game, I hope it does bring in new fans And though like many I don't mind a drink (if only there was more hours in the day) but if footy can move away from being associated with the boofhead male fan that is definitely a big plus.

I can understand why some may be confused, and struggle to understand what’s at play here. The NRL is simply trying to tap into divisive, tribal politics after seeing the success of the global communist movement. It’s often said, there are two highly motivational primeval emotions, love and hate. These days asking someone to love you because you’re good is no where near as powerful as saying hate the other guy because he is evil. Super man needs a penguin otherwise there’s no story. The activists need an evil tribe, because without an enemy there’s no need for activism.
The question being asked by that ad is “which tribe are you on?”
I really do feel for people who get caught up in all this nonsense. Dane Gagai was settled on one tribe until another tribe emerged as the evil side to which he also had a connection. Forcing him to withdraw.

If they're trying to tap into tribalism, then why not show the contest within the game? They was barely any (if any) footage of a player or a team getting over the top of another. There was the grand finalists holding trophies, some great GF moments, some kids woth captions of them being current first grade footballers.

I think as some others have said, it shows the mindset of the current NRL administration - which is to address their perception of popular PC opinion.

Mate, they aren't smart enough to be in touch with global trends/occurrences/movements.

Having only 16 tribes in the NRL wasn’t going to work forever, it may have been realised 5 or 10 years ago. Juniors are no longer the valuable commodity they once were, seasoned vets are bought and sold, fans have a second team. It was time to introduce more tribes unrestricted by the number of teams. The key to success with tribalism is to be divisive. You can see some posters here mentioning white males as they attempt to establish them as the enemy.

I don't mind the ad. I think if you're looking for reasons to criticise it then you've got too much spare time on your hands.

Wouldn't have a problem if it was an ad for the Indigenous game... but it's not.
