12'— @josh_drinkwater bangs over the conversion and we lead 10-0, as Funaki comes back on the field from the sin-bin.

20'— Illawarra try. Repeat sets on our line and Hutchinson throws a good cut-out ball for Cranston to score. 10-4

22'— Crook converts. We lead @NSWCUP_Cutters 10-6.

35'— Illawarra try. Desperate defence from Seve after Cerruto's missed tackle but Cranston is ruled to have scored.

36'— Crook misses. Locked at 10-10 with the @NSWCUP_Cutters here in what is becoming a very good contest.

53'— Crook converts. Cutters lead 26-16\. #VBNSWCup #WTLive

73'— TRY TIME! Not over yet! Numbers to the left and it's draw-and-pass as Funaki sets up Sila for his second! 26-20,

76'— No love from the officials today. Another penalty against us for a ruck infringement and Illawarra take the two.

NSW CUP FULL TIME — Close finish at Goulburn, with the @NSWCUP_Cutters prevailing 28-20 in the end.

Another pathetic defensive performance from a WT side…

Wests Tigers NSW Cup side have suffered a close 28-20 loss to the Illawarra Cutters today in their Round 13 clash at Workers Arena, Goulburn.

With a string of pre-game changes due to the first-grade appearances of Manaia Cherrington and Nathan Milone on Friday night, Wests Tigers started their Country Round clash against the Cutters in a less-than-perfect start, with Salesi Funaki sent to the sin-bin after just three minutes of play for being the third man in a push-and-shove.

However, Fletcher’s side would respond from that blow with two sensational pieces of attacking play — the first seeing Sitaleki Akauola put John Sila over after five minutes before Sila returned the favour to find Kurtis Rowe after 10 minutes of play.

Josh Drinkwater split the conversions, giving his side a 10-0 lead after 12 minutes.

After repeat set on Wests Tigers’ line, Illawarra hit back in the 20th minute when Tyron Cranston found himself on the end of a good cut-out ball from Drew Hutchinson, and came around to improve the angle and reduce the margin to 10-6.

Wests Tigers would continue to defend valiantly as the Cutters attacked their line, and despite Cranston originally called to be held up after 35 minutes, a call from the touch judge saw the try then awarded — leveling the score at 10-10 approaching half-time.

The visitors would have one final chance for points before the break, and they would take that chance with a try to Salesi Funaki after a kick from Penani Manumealalii.

That gave Wests Tigers a well-deserved 16-10 lead at the break, with the big question being about whether they could hold that lead in the second half, having surrendered 14-0 and 22-4 half-time in their past two matches against Wyong and North Sydney.

Cranston grabbed his third try of the afternoon in the 49th minute after beating Mason Cerruto down the right wing before linking up with Shannon Crook, who returned the pass back to the winger to level the match at 16-all after 46 minutes.

Illawarra would grab their first lead of the match in the 49th minute when a linebreak from Kiti Glymin found Justin Hunt backing up on the inside, and they extended that lead shortly after when Charly Runciman out-jumped Cerruto to score in the 53rd minute.

Two successful conversions from Crook took the Cutters’ lead out to 26-16.

Wests Tigers looked to have hit back in the 62nd minute when Lamar Liolevave charged through on to a grubber from Drinkwater, but the Junior Kiwi forward was tripped from behind as he went to plant the ball down. Incredibly, no penalty was awarded for the incident and the Cutters were able to work the ball from their end, still leading 26-16.

Tyler Cassel went close to scoring in the 69th minute when he carried several defenders over the line, but his appeals were denied as the referee ruled he knocked the ball on.

Fletcher’s side would continue to knock at the door and would eventually cross the line in the 72nd minute when Funaki put Sila over for his second try of the afternoon.

Drinkwater would be unable to add the extras, though, leaving the score at 26-20.

That would prove to be the final chance for Wests Tigers, though, with a soft penalty goal to Crook in the final minutes of the match giving the Cutters a 28-20 lead late in the match, which is how it would read as the full-time siren sounded in Goulburn.

FULL TIME — Illawarra Cutters 28 (Cranston 3, Hunt, Runciman tries; Crook 4/6 goals) def. Wests Tigers 20 (Sila 2, Rowe, Funaki tries; Drinkwater 2/4 goals)

Wests Tigers NSW Cup Coach Paul Fletcher has praised the performances of some of his youngsters in the Club’s 28-20 defeat to the Illawarra Cutters at Goulburn.

With Manaia Cherrington and Nathan Milone called up for their first-grade debuts earlier on the weekend, Holden Cup players Tyler Cassel and Matthew Woods were called up for their NSW Cup debuts on Saturday, with Fletcher particularly impressed with the peformances of Cassel and young Holden Cup centre Marion Seve.

“I think Tyler deserves a massive rap after that one today,” said Fletcher post-match.

“He played some massive minutes in his debut and was easily our best forward, which is a big compliment to him given the talented forwards we had out there.

"He was aggressive in defence and kept going all afternoon, and I’m really pleased for him.

“Without him today, we’d have been lucky not to lose by 100.

**“I thought young Marion was also good today with some limited opportunities,” Fletcher continued. “He’s got some really dangerous feet and he showed again today why he’s going to be such a tough player to mark against if he continues to develop as he has.”**

Voted Man of the Match for Wests Tigers on the day, Cassel said afterwards that despite the style being far different from under-20s, being around experienced and professional players made him feel comfortable and helped deliver a strong performance on the day.

“The game itself was probably a bit slower than the 20’s, but the contact was just so much harder, which is what made it tough,” he said. “They just run a bit harder and they’re a bit bigger, so it’s more of a challenge and I thought I went pretty well in that.

“I’ve been playing 80 minutes in the 20’s recently, so I guess once I got stuck into it out there, I was confident I’d find a good rhythm and get through a lot of work.

“For me, it was really good to be able to play with guys like [Jack] Buchanan and [Matt] Lodge who have that NRL experience. It was great to play alongside them, and hopefully I get the chance again soon to play alongside them and the rest of the boys soon.”

Having led Illawarra 16-10 at half-time, Wests Tigers saw a third-straight half-time lead fall away on Saturday afternoon with the Cutters fighting back to score three quick tries before a late fight back from the visitors left the match in the balance late in the piece.

However, Wests Tigers would be unable to grab the al-important final try, with a late penalty goal ensuring the Cutters hung on to record a 28-20 win in the end.

Wests Tigers NSW Cup side will look to end a run of three consecutive defeats when they take on the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on June 12 at Campbelltown Stadium.

Cassel, Seve, Funaki all improving and looking very promising. Salesi especially, been thrown around 4 different positions in the state cup this year already.

Sitaleki has also been pretty consistant in the NSW Cup this season. I wonder why he hasn't been given a crack in first grade over the other plodders. (Namely Santi and Lovett in the back row)

Hard to see Sitaleki getting a run with Taylor concentrating solely on defence, which is his weak point.
