Good effort by this team to get up especially since the raiders had so much going their way early but our blokes hung in and got the chocolates, good luck to them for next week.

Match Report: NYC Elimination Final

Wests Tigers’ Holden Cup side have kept their 2015 season alive with a 24-22 win over the Canberra Raiders in an Elimination Final today at Allianz Stadium.

Finishing the season in fifth position, Brett Kimmorley’s side came up against the eighth-placed Raiders side who had defeated them twice during the regular season.

Halfback Jeremy Marshall-King was instrumental in the Wests Tigers victory, with the playmaker scoring two individual tries during the match.

Wests Tigers got off to a strong start in the match after receiving a penalty in their very first set, with Marion Seve cleaning up a loose ball to score from a Te Maire Martin cross-field kick. Matthew Woods couldn’t convert from out wide and it remained 4-0 advantage after three minutes.

The Raiders were able to strike back quickly though with Zac Woolford providing a quality grubber from dummy-half for Lachlan Lewis who scooped it up to score. Woolford missed the conversion from close to the goalposts to keep it locked up at 4-all after seven minutes.

Wests Tigers lock forward Tyler Cassel was placed on report in the eighth minute for a dangerous throw.

Canberra crashed over the line soon after with winger Cameron Booth taking advantage of the numbers on their left edge, however Woolford was again unsuccessful with the kick leaving the scores at 8-4 after 12 minutes.

Marching down the field quickly, the Raiders came close to extending their lead in the very next set with Tevita Pangai losing the ball over the line.

It was the exact same story for Wests Tigers in the 16th minute with Jayden Wheelhouse showing great footwork to get over the line but was unable to ground the ball.

Jeremy Marshall-King broke the point-scoring drought in the 32nd with a piece of individual brilliance, throwing a dummy and racing away down the right edge to score. The number seven missed the conversion and the scores were back even at 8-all.

The score would remain that way going into the half time break, a great effort from the Wests Tigers considering the Raiders enjoyed 57% of possession and led the penalty count 6-5.

The Raiders were first to score in the second half, with fullback Sione Alofi dropping a fairly easy kick and putting the opposition deep on the attack. Pangai was again looking dangerous and carried four defenders and gave an offload to Booth who crossed for his second of the day. Dylan McGrath missed the conversion from touch and Canberra hit the lead 12-8 after 47 minutes.

Both sides had a number of chances in the next period, however it wasn’t until the 60th minute when Martin took the line on with a great dummy and sliced straight through for the 12-all equaliser. Woods kept the run of missed conversions going as he sprayed the kick to the right.

Veiru Mapesone showed great speed in the very next set, only to be pulled down by the Raiders fullback close to the line. Canberra were penalised on the next play and Woods slotted the first goal of the match to make it a 14-12 advantage after 64 minutes.

Marshall-King produced another piece of brilliance in the 67th minute, throwing a dummy on the inside and going over for his second of the day. Woods gave his side an eight-point buffer with the conversion making it 20-12.

The Raiders ensured it would be a tense finish to the match as centre Jack Williams forced his way through the defence to score. Woolford missed his third conversion of the day, with his side trailing 20-16 after 71 minutes.

Mapesone all but sealed it for his side in the 73rd minute, running though a massive hole in the Raiders defence line. The score remained at 24-16 with Woods missing the conversion.

A late try to Kalani Going in the 78th minute kept the Raiders in it, however it wasn’t to be with the Wests Tigers running out 24-22 winners.

Wests Tigers will face Manly-Warringah next weekend in a semi-final, with the venue still to be confirmed.

NYC FULL TIME — Wests Tigers 24 (Marshall-King 2, Martin, Seve, Mapesone tries; Woods 2/5, Marshall-King 0/1 goals) defeated Canberra Raiders 22 (Booth 2, Williams, Lewis, Going tries; Woolford 1/4, McGrath 0/1 goals)

A poor performance in attack. Defence was very good for the most part though. 2 weeks in a row now we've won despite Martin having a poor match.

Stone's a top prospect. Not sure if he's finished the hsc yet. Once he fills out he could be a huge handful in attack and defence. Goes hard, huge work ethic and great power in defence, and he's a lightweight right now.

Along with sirro, woods and marsters there's some top back row prospects.

Halves were both pretty poor. Benji can only run, can't pass or kick and Martin would have to be the epitome of rocks and diamonds. He must have needlessly got tackled on the 4th half a dozen times, as the sole kicker in the team that's not good enough and the team struggled big time on last tackle options. A considerable way behind the level that Brooks and Moses were at in the nyc.

Considering raiders had 70% possession after 30 mins it was very pleasing to have scores level.

We still criminally under use our backs. They never touch the ball. Seve and Kharwin, the two best outside backs in the team touched the ball twice all game outside of kick returns or doing a hit up of our line. Disgraceful. Both could and probably should have scored still.imagine what they might do if they got passed or kicked the ball more than once a game.

when watching i was thinking where did ray stone come from. this guy was everywhere and unbelievable in defence. have not seen him before but was really impressed. the tigers defense when the possession was70% raiders was desperate and really commendable

Ray Stone is from the Southern Highlands. Played for the Australian Schoolboys last year and again selected this year with Ryan Papenhuyzen.

Just hope they can put some size on that frame

If they can , hope he sticks around a while

thanks P&C, gotta agree HT, first impressions are most times the best and ray stone really impressed. i think he played all but 10 minutes or so and he was always in thick of it.
looking forward to next weeks " big " match.

Agreed, I would add Cassell to that list of promising backrowers.

Anyone know what date the tigers playing next week/time?

Going to cancel the Foxtel( Going on holidays anyway).

We're at 5.15pm on Friday, I'm heading out to it.

Interesting to see many comparing Stone to Fulton. I understand but don't agree. Fulton was a tackling machine and skilled ball player/off loader. Stone runs and tackles hard at a million miles an hour, he also looks like he will fill out a lot more than Liam ever did. I'd compare him more to Simom Dwyer or Ryan Hoffman at the same age. Either way he seems a great prospect.

This team has done ok considering that some people said that with Kimmorley at the helm, we would be a basket case.

Martin has not played well since he signed with Penrith. But the team is hanging in there. I think Marshall-King is going ok, considering that he has only recently changed to halfback. Two tries the other day and a couple in the weeks previous. Not a bad defender either.

They will need Martin to fire next week and they should beat Manly. However, I cannot see any side beating Penrith. Their NYC is nearly as good as their first grade side.

Thanks for that Ferg. I might head out too if I can get out of work.

I still stand by the fact I cannot see this team winning the comp with Kimmorley as head coach.

The one thing I noticed about our 20's Forward Pack on Sunday - Was that it is small.

I swear we must have height restrictions on our signings…
Sure they have talent, And a fair bit of guts - But they're just not big enough to progress much further in the NRL...
Seems to have been the case since I can remember - We have always had the best 20's back rowers in the comp... But that's where they usually finish.
Santi, Farlow, Spence, Hyland, Schirnack, Lovett - The list goes on and on.
I thought Felise, Marsters, Sokobalavau and Tatola were good. Holding out hope for Sironen...
Stone looks tough (And I love his name, Sounds like a Wrestler) But reminds me of Santi.
Cassell has talent, But again lacks size.... I had high hopes for Woods but hasn't really kicked on or beefed up.
I'm also worried that Lamar may be even a bit small, We have invested a bit on him to come good... Hope it happens.

There's only one there I didn't rate…. And it's not that I don't I just didn't.
Not that the stats are ever right, The boys laugh at them when they see them written somewhere. But here's another...

Tyler Cassel
Date of Birth: 01-03-1995
Height: 180cm
Weight: 91kg
Position: Lock, Second Row
Rep. Honours: N/A

That's smaller than Benji was when he finished with us wasn't it...

Cassel is very small, but has excellent technique. Big question marks whether he could ever play nrl though. Would be a smaller version of fulton…

Stone would be more of a combo of Hoffman and Teo sortof style backrower.

Our forwards aren't tiny, though they're not as huge as others, but have still outperformed most bigger packs. It's the rest of our team which is tiny. Our backs (Kharwin aside) and halves are all very small.

Important to note though that most of our nyc side are quite young and are in their first season of nyc and will certainly fill out with another year behind them out of school.

Don't disagree with ya mate - History tells me that most if not all of our small back rowers with a big ticker and good technique don't ever amount to much….

I possibly should have been more specific - I was more talking our backrow forwards...

They develop far better once they get into grade BB in my opinion

With the improved S & C I think it will make a huge difference ( well hope it does )

Been hearing that for a long, long time happy…
Long and the short of it is, we've had 1 1/2 decent new back rowers In 10 years... Been a dogs age since we bred one. Even prior to that, the ones we had were small...
