Twal has been superb, but Packer and Mats have zero go forward lately. Running for 50m a game is unacceptable.

Yes and No. Cleary has been playing Eiso, Twal, Grant, Packer, Matulino at stages of games it’s a more balanced workload.
I don’t know the stats but more important to look at yards per carry and the speed of the play the ball. We used to be ineffective with Woods running 200+ metres per game.

I appreciate they may not be good SuperCoach props but Cleary is using a forward pack approach. I think for the period people are questioning last 5-6 weeks both props are playing between 35-40 minutes a game and making a lot of tackles in short bursts.

I see two props covering their teammates often and leading the team. Appreciate this is qualitative stuff but I’d rather run out with Packer and Mats than without them.

Yesterday twal played 10 mins less than packer yet ran for more metres and made more tackles. I was a huge fan of packer early in the season but his contribution lately has been zero. Matulino has been marginally better. They’re both shadows of their former selves.

Having a couple of wingers who can tackle well and run 100 metres in 10 seconds would be handy as well.

Our style of play is really not suited to the forwards. A lot of our plays are short-side blitzes, playmaking from the halves i.e. short passing to the forwards which really restricts their metres per game as they reach contact after about 2 metres of running (which is why stats are inaccurate), not to mention how much metres we milk off of Marsters and Fonua alone. Packer and Matulino have not had a big impact on the game as of recently because the team's mindset has shifted considerably.

Also, we have too many ball-playing forwards. Eisenhuth, Taylor, even Matulino. We need someone with impact to replace one of these guys to get any real go forward.

Will be interesting to see how he goes, particularly if there is a bit of movement in the fullback ranks with Barba, French, Meaney, Holmes all potentially on the move.

If he is not coming this year, I am not sure why we would have pursued him so hard. Which other clubs were chasing him?. Making Canterbury hold him leaves them with no cap space to sign anyone else on the market.
