One love: Moltzen in position to seal spot

WESTS TIGERS utility Tim Moltzen told coach Tim Sheens he wanted to be the club's regular fullback during recent negotiations to extend his contract until 2015.

As revealed in the Herald earlier this month, Moltzen has agreed to terms on a new three-year deal with the Tigers that he said has enabled him to focus on his football now his future has finally been confirmed.

Moltzen, who was the centre of a war of words between the Tigers and St George Illawarra after reneging on a deal with the Dragons late last year to stay at the club he joined as an 18-year-old in 2007, admitted the controversy affected his form this season.

However, the 23-year-old central coast junior said yesterday that he was happy with how things had worked out and his goal now was to secure the Tigers No.1 jersey for years to come.

''I have spoken to the coach and it is my position to hold onto or my position to lose,'' Moltzen told the Herald. ''I have got confidence in myself and my ability that over the next three years that is a position I can make my own and hold onto, and that is what I intend to do.''

Since making his NRL debut in 2008, Moltzen has played halfback, five-eighth, fullback and centre for the Tigers, and started this season as Benji Marshall's scrumbase partner.

But Moltzen said he had decided that fullback was his preferred position and Sheens had promised him first shot at the No.1 jersey when boom rookie James Tedesco returns from a knee reconstruction next season.

''We have got some talented youngsters coming through the ranks and I guess it is up to me now to keep them at bay and hold on to that No.1 jersey. That is going to be my focus,'' he said.

''I have always said that I want to do the best by the team and if the coach asks me to move into a position then that is what I am happy to do.

''But it just makes it tough during the week at training trying to focus on certain areas. If you are changing position then it is hard to improve on certain things. I am really enjoying myself at fullback at the moment and I am hoping to finish the year off there and then I can focus in the off-season on fullback.''

After a serious knee injury last year and his contract dispute with the Dragons, Moltzen said he had now regained his confidence and believes the Tigers can win a premiership in the next four seasons he is committed to the club.

''It's good to have some security at the club I love and the chance to keep playing with some of my closest mates,'' Moltzen said ''It was tough heading out to that game at Kogarah and then losing the game made it worse. Everything that happened in the off-season got to me a little bit. I went into my shell and let it affect me, which is why I am happy with nutting this out and have a new contract.''

Meanwhile, the Tigers will welcome back international forwards Adam Blair and Gareth Ellis for Saturday night's trip to Townsville to play the Cowboys.

Blair missed his first match since joining the Tigers this season when he was banned after being found guilty of unnecessary contact with the leg of Canterbury centre Josh Morris last week, while Ellis has not played since round five due to a knee injury.

''It's always tough sitting on the sidelines watching your team play without you,'' Blair said.

''You feel pretty helpless and can't help out. It happened so quick. I got done for a leg pull but it is over now and we move on.''

Blair is no stranger to the judiciary, but the 26-year-old said he did not feel he was being picked on because of his reputation or the fact he is a former Melbourne player. The Storm have been heavily criticised for their wrestling techniques in the play-the-ball, but Blair said he has no problems with the officials.

''Refs watch everyone that plays, mine is just a name they call out along with everyone else,'' he said. ''I just try and stay away from those things. I work hard on the ground, but I got in trouble last week and I have to work harder on improving what I do.''

It won't be pretty if Moltzen starts at fullback ahead of Tedesco next year.

Well… Tedesco is still very young and he will take time to gain his confidence back, so I think Moltzen will have about a 6 month jump on Tedesco... So we'll have to wait and see if Moltzen can now focus and improve himself.

You would think so, but what happens if Teddy makes a good recovery and turns in a great pre-season?

''But it just makes it tough during the week at training trying to focus on certain areas." …........ let's hope one of the areas of concentration is catching the ball ! Wish him luck, but can't see what he offers on the evidence of the last couple of seasons ...... just another example of Sheens's square peg in the round hole selection policy ........ and yes, I'm talking about Benji at halfback.

I meant to say it will be pretty… Teddy will be pretty annoyed and may seek a release

I'd have to say start him for the season in the NYC (correct me if i'm wrong and he is no longer eligible).
Allow Tedesco to build his confidence to give him the best spring board into NRL.

Hope Moltzen watched Anthony Minicellos performance against Souths last nite…Mini showed the courage & committment required to make a success of the full back postion.
Mini's not a big guy either..about the same as Moltzen..but bigger where it counts!

I think Sheens tells the player what the player wants to hear, to help boost their confidence. At the end of year I believe Mitch Brown was told he would be first pick at fullback on 2012 as Moltz was going to saints, but then Tedesco and Humble were both ahead of him come round 1.

This is what I'd do… Get some miles in his knee and allow him to focus on his running game.

As long as the competition is between the 2 players, I'll be happy to have the best performing player wearing the 1 each week!

Okay, if he can hold onto the ball, he can hold onto the position…

Theres no way Sheens will rush Tedesco next yr. This is what has saved Moltzen's arse. If Tedesco's comes back any stronger then Moltzen did then its going to make Moltzen look like a laughing stock

Well at least we know what has affected his form this year, I feel so relieved, so 20 odd weeks in he is still struggling, so hopefully next year if Santa is good to him this year - he may perform up to first grade standard.

I don't think Tedesco would be annoyed if Moltzen were there at the start of the season. 20mins of first grade doesn't give him a right to a spot instantly. Everyone says he is the "long term option" at fullback and I agree but he doesn't need to be rushed. Who knows come next year, he could take every bomb from here till end of season and some people here still wouldn't be satisfied. Let them fight it out for 1 and reel in results. Would definitely keep both players on their toes and they would certainly earn their spot whoever gets FB as most people want to see.

Moltzen is not a good enough quality fullback in the NRL.

He needs to be in the 7 jumper. He loves running off Benji when they are in the halves. Plus he looks far more comfortable and dangerous there.

At fullback he looks uneasy and scared, especially when fielding kicks. His catching technique of bombs is abysmal.

I'd much Rather Beau Ryan at fullback, he looks more confident and is almost a natural there.

I am not a fan of Moltzen at the back barring his performance leading into the 2011 finals and through it.

Hopefully now that he has his future secured I am willing to see if he plays with that drive and determination again before really formin an opinion on his re-signing.

I can understand if it has had an effect on his form and willingness to put it on the line because after the fiasco with Saints it would have been very hard to get a contract elsewhere and impossible if injured.

As I said not a fan at all but willing and hoping to be convinced otherwise

Geez … If Saturday's performance is something he's happy with then I don't want him anywhere near our side. I dont care if he dropped one bomb, his support play was non existant and looked like he couldn't give two hoots the whole game.

He will definitely start as our fullback next year though for a few reasons:

1\. He's in 'The Club'
2\. Our halves seem pretty settled for next year with Benji, Siro and Anasta all ahead of him in that respect
3\. Tedesco had the perfect run in to this season. He was fully fit, was dominating in the 20s last year, had a full off season with the team and had everything going for him. Coming off a major injury like this will take time. Regardless of how talented I know he is, for his own sake, and for the club, I would bring him back through the 20s or BRET. Get him back to that form that earnt him the #1 jersey, then bring him in.

I wonder if Sheens really did 'promise' him first shot at the jersey.

What does first shot mean anyway? He gets to train in that position for most the pre-season? He gets first crack in the trials? He gets to play round 1?
