Really fitting that this thread has been brought back with the closure of the others as I truly just had a video suggestion on YouTube and it was the news reports from the day that both Balmain and Western Suburbs members voted at Balmain Leagues and Campbelltown on the merger of two 90+ year old clubs. So I gave it a watch.
So much heartbreak from the long time supporters, but so much understanding and hope for the future, knowing it was the right move.
The total combined vote was 549 for to 106 against. But more interestingly it was 295 to 99 on the Balmain side and 254 to just 7 for Western Suburbs.
It is so sad looking at that, that even though the numbers are so low when you think of voting members, but 655 people got to make a decision about the future of the two clubs to become one and move forward into the future, and yet over 25 years later, it is just a group of just 7 who make all the decisions for better, or more often than not worse, and the true fans and members have absolutely no say at all.
None of this is pointed at either Balmain or Western Suburbs individually, but it really just shows how much has been lost, and perhaps why the club has not seen as much success in the time we have existed. No longer the voice of the fans and members, but just of those who look for power over anything else.
So the best way forward? Back to the days that the fans and members really have a voice and have some say about the club, be it the makeup of the board, or those who choose the board. Ownership or not, the real voice of the club is the fans and members and their voices need to be heard, just like in 1999.
