Our Defence In 2012 Just Was Not Good Enough

I know, I know, "No kidding Brainiac," when we lose more games than we win and we end up with the fifth worst points differential in the comp, obviously we're not up to scratch. But still, based on what happened defensively in some of the games in 2012 it's difficult to even fathom that we were the preseason favourites. That first Parra game where we leaked all those points at the end, the one against Souths we let slip away, that game against the Knights where they just kept keeping possession of the ball and scoring, that second rabbitohs game with the depressing scoreline, the second Parra game where we again beat them but I remember a comment on the Tigers website saying "Thank goodness their defence was as bad as ours", that second game against the Roosters which we needed, NEEDED to win and look at how that panned out…. yeah, I'm bummed.

Defense is all about attitude and desire. We lacked both of those qualities. Hoping Potter can instill it.

x2

Probably our defence wasn't helped with questionable roles permutation (centre to 5/8, wing to centre, lock to 9, 5/8 to HB, 5/8 to FB, 9 to HB etc.), and definitely poor choice (e.g. backs instead of forwards) and use of the bench. :frowning:

biggest myth in rugby league. The commentators love that cliche.

Defense is primarily about systems, decision making and working together.

Attitude and effort are an element , but the reason that the storm have the best defensive record year after year isn't cause they try harder

Hahah…You just agreed with him goose....attitude & working together in a team environment go hand in hand, one and the same

When you and your inside and outside men are called on to stop the opposition, working together, having the desire to not let your team mates down and having the confidence they wont let you down is the attitude in defense that is the ''myth the comms waffle on about'' :unamused:

it is little to do with not letting your team mate down and more being in sync that iis important. no one want s ton let their mate down but the key to good defense is far more about working as a unit and making correct decision s.

And have a great scrambling defence when we do make errors in defence is important

Kick chase is also very important The less times teams end up in your red zone the more successful your defence will be

Exactly, the Tigers rarely looked cohesive in 2012\. Some good individual performances amongst the team. Very few good team performances and the Tigers basically got what they put into the season.

OK mate you just contradicted yourself imo but we;ll agree to disagree…I can see this could go on for ever

The bold is the ''attitude'' that you are missing and believe is a myth......its clear youve never experienced it, if you have you know it exists

Keeping the same squad on the park also goes along way to ensuring good defence exists… The understanding of your left and right defender is what allows you to adjust and make good decisions. Place a new boy to your left/right, and all of a sudden, cracks will appear.

It was this area which concerned me most in 2012... Sheens would switch defenders 3-4 times throughout the game. What hope did traditionally good defenders like Ashford have? No wonder his confidence was down, which was quickly followed with his form!

A good solid defensive team takes a few weeks, even months to form. It starts with continuity, then you see the attitude improve as it becomes more confident. Only then do see dominant and aggressive defensive lines...

Bring on 2013!

I'm just hoping Anasta brings his kicking game Everything rolls off your kick chase

It helps bring aggression in your defence as you are able to be moving forward , confidence and enthusiasm when you have a team buried deep in their own half

Look at last season , we were constantly having team punching holes up the centre of the ruck because we were constantly on the backfoot due to a bad kicking game and worse kick chase

Wt now have players such as Anasta, Miller and Farah who have great kicking games. In 2013 Benji should concentrate on his attacking game and not contribute to the team kicking game at all. The defence will be much better because of the improved kicking game.

Agree that benji should have nothing to do with kicking for field position. And definitely no bombs. The only kicks I want to see from him next year are those curving grubbers into the corners that he had a fair bit of success with beau Ryan on the end of them. They'll look even better with a flying koro latching onto them and scoring!
