Panthers 'awful, inept, extremely disappointing' against Storm, says Ivan Cleary

Will be a while till he’s a dead man walking, regardless how bad they are going. He has a 5 year contract.

When you have a coaches son, whose also the NSW halfback amd you are desperate to retain him, whatever it takes. Suddenly that sub 50% coach is a must have.

They miss Peachey big time, he was the one that did all the broken field stuff that the others fed off.
Also I don’t know what Jaw Juniors role in the team, paying a bloke a million bucks a year to play second fiddle behind Maloney is a strange move. At present he is a catch and pass player.

They will improve but they are way behind the Chooks Rabbits and Storm

If they panfers dont make the GF this year or next year he will get the boot contract or not.The club has more money than sense and dont care what it costs

Not too surprised really. I didnt see last nights game, but last week Maloney kept them in the game. As a team, they are performing poorly under Cleary at this point.

We have ended up with a better coach and Penrith are paying for most of Madge's salary.

My morals aren't too high to admit that I'm enjoying the Schadenfreude. Also know it's not good in wishing harm on someone but if Nathan booted the ball and it came off the side of his boot and smacked Ivan in the head then pinballed into Gus that would make my day.

I'd like to know when a 5 year contract meant anything especially when it comes to sacking coaches..

I think you find when a coach gets Sacked they generally still have a contract…only one of recent memory that wasn't sacked was Potter..

Still too early to be gloating. I remember we were gloating last year when we got off to a great start and the 3 that left struggled early. One ended up winning the comp.

Your are right however as a WTs fan you have to enjoy any success. Last year after the first five rounds I was gloating pretty hard as well. I'm glad I did because otherwise I would have been miserable for the whole season.

Ivan Cleary may have changed his stripes, but there'll be no changing his focus ahead of his anticipated first match against the Wests Tigers next week. And the Penrith coach will need to block out as much of the build-up as possible as he tries to pick up the pieces from Saturday's 32-2 drubbing by Melbourne.

Cleary described the Panthers' second-half performance in Bathurst as "awful", "inept", and "extremely disappointing".

His team failed to cross the stripe despite having 30 looks at the Storm line inside the opening 30 minutes on Saturday night, compared to the Storm's none.

Then the Panthers conceded four unanswered tries in the second half to leave Cleary with just one unconvincing win from their opening three games.

Cleary was not discouraged by his team's inability to find the stripe, but took serious issue with their lack of fight when the Storm took a two-try advantage.

"The game changed around the 46th minute mark when (Melbourne) scored again. I thought our boys really failed to deal with that," Cleary said. I think we completed four sets for the rest of the game or something. Just all parts of our game I thought were just inept."

Not the kind of adjectives Penrith fans were expecting after the drawn-out drama that resulted in Cleary jumping off the Tigers' bus late last year.

Almost six months to the day Cleary officially rejoined the Panthers, his men are a shadow of the team widely tipped to contend for the premiership this year.

NSW Origin halves pairing James Maloney and Nathan Cleary barely fired a shot against the Storm, while fullback Dylan Edwards made six errors.

And if the pressure hasn't ramped up already, the Tigers side Cleary abandoned are flying at the top of the table with two wins from as many games.

They're expected to make it three from three against Canterbury on Sunday.

"(The Tigers are) going pretty well but for us, we've got to focus mainly on what we can deliver and across the 80 minutes it needs to be a lot better," Cleary said.

He denied the likely attention the match-up will receive would be a distraction, especially after their humbling at the hands of the Storm. The only saving grace will be that the game is being played at Panthers Stadium.

"It's not going to worry me," Cleary said.

When pressed further on what the face-off would mean to him, Cleary bristled before ending his post-game press conference.

"How many times? You've asked the question enough. Seriously," he said.

Told the issue would be discussed all week, he said: 'Good. I look forward to it."

# Comment: Ivan Cleary paid $250,000 to buy his freedom from Tigers

There has been so much written about **Ivan Cleary** ’s move to Penrith – some fact, some fiction – but Cleary has certainly paid for his freedom.

The Tigers and Panthers meet on Friday night at Penrith Stadium and the build-up will be big, even if the clubs don’t want it to be.

There was a story doing the rounds in recent times that said the Panthers were paying $400,000 towards **Michael Maguire** ’s deal at the Tigers by way of compensation because Cleary was still under contract at Leichhardt. I’ve been told that’s not close to the mark.

In fact, it is Cleary who paid for his own freedom. He coughed up $250,000 so he could coach the team he wanted to coach. And be in charge of the destiny of his superstar son **Nathan** .

![Ivan Cleary holding a wine glass: Done deal: Ivan Cleary has paid for the privilege of choosing his destiny.](https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBVq5RS.img?h=410&w=729&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f&x=483&y=137)© ninevms Done deal: Ivan Cleary has paid for the privilege of choosing his destiny. It’s not likely that Ivan wrote a cheque to the Tigers as an escape fee. He is said to have had the amount absorbed in his Penrith contract to compensate the Tigers for his early departure. It cost him a lot to make the switch to chase his dream of coaching his son.

The move west has taken a considerable toll on Ivan and his family. Nathan is the most unflappable of young men, but he was affected. He got off social media at the time and he has decided against renewing a deal with Fox Sports that tied him to making comments for the network.

When I spoke with Nathan at the start of the season he said there was one particular line of criticism that had particularly irked him.

‘‘It was pretty tough watching what was being said … it would be hard for anyone,’’ Nathan said.

‘‘Itwas probably hardest on my little siblings and my mum because they were not used to that scrutiny. Me and Dad are used to it. It’s the game that we play and we have to take it on the chin.

‘‘There was one article which said that he was un-Australian for what he was doing. Obviously, I don’t agree with that, but you just have to move forward.’’

Nathan is delighted his dad is onboard. ‘‘The trust between player and the coach is hard to find, but we have that,’’ he said. ‘‘In saying that, it’s almost made it harder for me because everything I do I want to impress Dad. There is probably more pressure on me now, but ... I am learning about that as I go and I have to just keep working hard on my game.’’

Ivan does not handle pressure well. His demeanour last year when all the controversy was around was pretty poor. His inability to face his players when leaving was disgusting. And now he ‘bristles’ when being questioned about the upcoming clash. He’s not made of the stuff I thought he was made of. Your poor form continues Ivan! Welcome to your week from hell!

@Tiger_Fan18 stop posting crap that is not Wests Tigers in Wests Tigers discussion …thanks

The club was specifically mentioned 4 times. The whole premise of the article was him leaving us for greener pastures backfiring and the fact we square off next weekend. How is that not relevant?
