Pat Richards bypassing City Origin per order from Daley

So according to the NSWRL Twitter John Sutton and Pat Richards were deliberately not selected for City vs. Country.

"For those asking, Peats ruled out due to injury. Sutton experienced enough to be rested as per Laurie Daley's call. Richards in same boat."

Interesting. I wouldn't consider him a given for Origin now but I'd say it means he definitely has the inside running and if he maintains his form to the lead up and nobody else goes on a massive tear he'll be there.

We might have three Tigers in the NSW team this year! :smiley:

Pleasantly surprised by this if true, but I thought the NSW selectors were gonna go with youth and speed on the wings. However, I reckon Patty's experience would be of benefit to the side and his kicks could create all sorts of havoc for Qld.

Sutton's own coach doesn't have him first choice five-eighth at his own club.

Why is NSW cursed with idiotic selectors and coaches?

Great news for Patty He has done well so far

I feel selfish but are having mixed feelings for us Losing Farah ,Woods and possibly Richards could put a downer to a mid season revival

I'm a bit shocked he didnt give him a run in city country but it a bit relieving its because daley rates him. I'd pick him just about on goal kicking alone

I dont see it as a given. Rather simply no need for Pat to prove himself. Laurie already knows what he is going to get. Whether that is what he wants is another question.

I know what you mean mate. Great news for all players and Richards didn't put a foot wrong in a losing side yesterday. Put him on the end of some good playmakers and he'll finish a try without too much trouble. And if the scores are locked at the death and we get a penalty 55 metres out, you can bet Patty will kick it too!

Not a genuine trial for nsw like it was a few years ago.. The rep schedule is too jumbled this time of year.

As a matter of interest, Mac, who would put at five eighth this year? Stick with Maloney or try someone new?

what i heard from freddy in the city press conference felt like they decided not to pick patty because he hasnt played nrl for too long and at 31, he's not what SOO is looking at.

hope i understood it wrong for patty's sake. he has this winning culture around him. wherever he goes, he always stands out in a winning team. hope he can do that at SOO as well if he gets picked. he certainly will not let anyone down.

We saw what pattys kick offs did to Brett Stewart…. Slater would crumble

If he isn't there I don't see how Pearce can be retained
Hodkinson is the form half for the blues who ...wait for it...can kick
He'd be there other than injury the last few seasons...was ahead of dce at manly

City-Country is supposed to be about three things:
1) having two potential Origin players square off against each other;
2) find out how new or young players handle first rep duties;
3) reward/recognise fringe rep-standard players for their form, see if they can take it to another level.

If you have already made up your mind about a player, the City-Country is not necessarily a good use of their time.

Richards, for example, is either already out or already pencilled in for some scenario. My guess is that the more we need a goal kicker, the better the chance for Patty. He's played in grand finals, World Cup, NRL and ESL, he doesn't really need a hit-out to show his wares or to reward him for being a good footballer.

For Sutto, that bloke is 400 light years behind Josh Reynolds. #6 a two-horse race if Maloney is fit.

If NSW is to be any chance this series, the side must be selected on form AND experience.
Richards ticks both boxes. Forget his age, he will get the job done.
