With a young, talented and exciting squad, Western Suburbs Magpies were the team to watch in 2021 — producing plenty of fireworks on the field throughout the season.

Ben Gardiner’s men scored more points than any other team across the competition — making themselves the most exciting team to watch.

They finished the year in second position on the ladder with nine wins, four losses and one draw, and if not for COVID-19 forcing the competition to be halted for a second-straight season, the Magpies would’ve gone close to claiming the premiership — if not winning the whole thing.

This young side went nine games undefeated in the middle of the campaign — producing wins against some of the best teams in the competition.

Halfback Jock Madden finished the season as the competition’s top point-scorer with 130 points from eight tries and 49 goals across 13 matches.

Not only did Madden control his side around the park throughout the season, but he also recorded six try assists, seven line-break assists, forced seven dropouts and made 200 tackles.

The optimistic sign for Wests Tigers Members and fans is that there is plenty of talent coming through the grades and the future is bright.

In fact, six Magpies players went on to make their NRL debuts in 2021 — Madden, Jake Simpkin, Tuki Simpkins, Kelma Tuilagi, Junior Pauga and Zac Cini.

A MATTER OF STATS
Ladder position — 2nd

Wins — 9

Draws — 1

Losses — 4

Points scored — 422 (1st)

Points conceded — 294 (3rd fewest)

Home record — 5-2 (1 draw)

Away record — 4-2

Players used — 43

BEST GAME
The most memorable game of the season came in Round 10 against the Bears at North Sydney Oval.

Playing under lights on a Thursday night prime time TV game — the day before Magic Round kicked off — Wests produced a convincing 36-16 triumph despite facing plenty of adversity in the lead up to the match.

It was a special win for Ben Gardiner’s men after the Magpies coach was forced to make 14 changes to his original line-up named on Tuesday due to COVID-19 protocols.

Reece Hoffman, Zach Dockar-Clay and Kelma Tuilagi were the only players to start in the positions they were named in with eight NRL squad members forced to sit out.

Seven Magpies players were on NSW Cup debut as Gardiner called on a number of Jersey Flegg players to step up to reserve grade.

Tuilagi was one of the standout players at the iconic venue as he scored two tries and ran for over 180 metres.

Halfback Zach Dockar-Clay was also impressive as he had a hand in a number of tries, while Tuki Simpkins produced plenty of strong carries and big hits.

2022 OUTLOOK
With an emerging squad at Wests Tigers, the reserve grade team is primed to have another successful season.

There’s an abundance of young talent filtering through the grades, giving coach Ben Gardiner plenty of options next year.

With the 2020 and 2021 seasons suspended due to COVID-19, the Magpies and the entire competition will be hoping for a full season in 2022.

there were some weeks where I preferred to watch the Magpies over the first grade outfit. very very good side and a lot of decent youngsters in there that we can look forward to making the transition in the next few years.

Also enjoyed watching them when I could. How good is it to see Magpies winning?!
Was gutted that COVID shut it down, we were locked in for a Sydney trip to stay at Newtown and watch the Henson Park game. Even brought the old man's old cotton jersey out of retirement to be ready for it!

This year, even though it's reserve grade I thought we were a real chance of a premiership on GF day live on TV.
Yeah, I always felt there was a conspiracy against Wests.

Either getting robbed, or kicked out always something.
They were probably running put of ideas so they had to come up with Covid and lockdowns to stop us .

I really missed the nsw cup comp this year as well as the old Toyota cup 20s.

Liked seeing all the up and comers coming through. Hey @Milky

The KOE cup team this year had a lot of potential.

Some positives going into next season:

Wests Magpies hungry for footy to return in 2022
Tuesday 28 September 2021
A Message to Members and Supporters of Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club (WSDRLFC)

After hosting successful game day events back at our spiritual home of Lidcombe Oval, Western Suburbs Magpies were disappointed to see COVID lockdowns take away our 2021 Season.

With NSW Looking to ease some COVID restrictions soon, like everyone we hope to see this evolve over the off season into an uninterrupted Rugby League Season for 2022.

We all agree it is important for our up-and-coming Juniors and 2nd and 3rd tier RL players to be training in person and playing the game they love.

WSDRLFC is excited to officially announce that the Club will again field our Ron Massey Cup Team while our commitment to the Wests Magpies NSW Knock On Effect Cup remains as strong as ever. The support of Wests Ashfield Leagues, financially and spiritually, is such an important factor in the Football Club's ability to not only exist but continue to grow, and their support is as strong as ever.

Despite COVID lock-downs and an abrupt end to the playing season, the Club continues to chip away with its day-to-day operations such as merchandise and membership, through social media and most importantly, preparing for the 2022 season.

We are grateful to our supporters who, despite the uncertain times, have held firm in their support for the Club through Lidcombe Oval attendance, membership or purchasing WM merchandise through our shop, areas that are crucial to the Magpie existence and growth.

As we planned, our double and triple header Game days this year at Lidcombe Oval delivered some great family friendly events in 2021 and we hope to repeat this in 2022 by working with NSWRL and Wests Tigers on draw alignments between NSW State Cup, RMC and Jersey Flegg and planning Marquee events such as our annual ‘Return to Lidcombe’ which was unfortunately taken away from us for this year.

Pending NRL Draws, Wests Magpies will continue to play selected games at Campbelltown Sports Stadium (this may include Magpies state cup prior to NRL).

Operating under the Wests Tigers Pathways umbrella, Our Wests Magpies Harold Matthews & SG Ball Junior Rep squads, co-ordinated by Shannon Gallant will be eager to return to the field and build on improvements seen in 2021. It is understood NSWRL will keep Harold Matthews as U/17s and SG Ball U/19s age grades for Season 2022. Wests retain our connection to Campbelltown and the Macarthur via these Magpies HM & SGB Junior Representative Squads and Development teams who train and play in the area.

Our On-Line shop will continue to operate 24/7. Be sure to check it out for Christmas Shopping ideas. Speaking of which, we have some exciting new merchandise planned for 2022

To show your support for the club, be sure to join or re-new as a WSDRLFC Member - Click HERE

We look forward to seeing you at the ground in 2022 to cheer on our Magpies teams at ALL levels. Such ongoing support bring its rewards both on and off the field.

Lol everyone is a phantom down voter as it is an anonymous function. I personally don’t see the point to it. Should just make it visible who downvoted, as long as like the upvote function it is targeted to the content and not the user.

Noticed there's always a random downvote on posts that are relatively neutral and wouldn't or shouldn't necessarily warrant a downvote

Always gives me a laugh
