Pauga

Pauga has that zip which makes life uncomfortable for his opponent. It's great to see a young man debut and play well. Imagine being pulled from the Brisbane Competition and now playing NRL. Well done.

His defence is very concerning. It's not through lack of effort as he puts his body on the line, but doesn't seem to have the strength to stick.

Sure he'll improve, but he was falling off almost every tackle and given our defensive gaps everywhere else, I don't think we can carry him in the side.

I keep reading that yet Staggs was kept incredibly quiet in the game.

I hope he gets another run but he made 8 tackles missed 5 that is concerning

Yep. He can't tackle at this level yet. Hopefully, its because he is adjusting to the speed.

It did seem like he got smashed quite a few times... but you get that on your first game.

Lets talk about concerning Defence, Mybe goes to fullback and puts a left arm out to stop the player from scoring. Pathetic !

Can not play him against Manly.

Who then?

Defensively they will crucify him and us. I'd rather have Mybe then expect him to face that onslaught.

But Turbo will do it anyone you put there, he may as well get that experience?

Not sure putting him up against the best there is when he is not ready will do much for his development or confidence.

Yeah right nothing like dropping a player a week after his debut when he scored to save his confidence.

Its not dropping him because of his performance it's about selecting the team that has the best chance of winning.

He was more hungry than some others in his spot previously.
I'd take that enthusiasm over laziness or complacency

Understand what you are saying but I don't think Mbye is the answer to anything anymore. I also don't have fond memories of Mbye's defensive lapses.

He was selected to mark up against Staggs. Assumably because we were seen as the best chance of winning with him in the side.

Yeah but Mbye's defence is a problem we already know about. Pauga is a new defensive problem. I don't want to pick on the guy because it's not his fault we have holes everywhere, but we need to plug some holes, not create new ones.

Who do we have to plug the defensive hole though? Pagua played well, and defensively was better than any of our other options.

That is the problem. Our centre/wing depth is terrible. Hopefully we find a couple for next year.

We went into the year knowing this...

BJ and Jet.
Very underwhelming.

Happy for Pauga to play the year out barring injury
But some recruitment is very needed.

Yep. Turbo will score 7 down his flank. The 2 missed tackles from Pauga in the last 5 mins of the game were very concerning.

If he does there are another 12 players in the team that need to have a good look at themselves I would say Madge cold possibly give AD a roving commission in defence to try and combat Turbo

You mean the same AD that has his own defensive issues is going to nullify Tommy Turbo?

Some people on here said we shouldn't sign anyone because players like Josh Rizk will be ready and their path would be blocked. We're not in danger of blocking anyone's path at the moment.

Rizk is a gun but he won't be ready for a while.
Need a FG ready roster.

Yes he's the one unless Packers fit and can do a Matterson on him?????

I am not sure how they come up with those stats. Luke Brooks was credited with 4 missed tackles and 2 ineffective tackles but I did not see anyone get past him. He may not have had contact with them when the tackle was completed, but he stopped them and then others got involved.

I did see Pauga miss some tackles.

Struggled in defence, but that was understandable given the step up in class and his recent introduction to the set up.

Manly's centres are not particularly mobile but are big and run a line. I would consider playing Hoffman or MCK as a centre next week

Thought he did very well up against Staggs.

Ask yourself how BJ would have gone up against the super star that is Katoni Staggs.

Happy to bring Jimmy back in next week but Power Ga did his job and we can turn to him if we need to.

he was no worse defensively than everyone else who played in the centres for us recently
BJ
JTJ
Talau
Mbye

AD probably the exception, but he wasn't brilliant either

How can we not sign a centre with that rubbish in front of you
