Can't see the WT gambling on Green, he's had a real fall from grace over the past couple of years. My preference would be for Ciraldo, I think the defensive structures he's put in place at the Panthers have clearly worked over the past couple of years and from what I've heard he has good rapport with the players.
I don't like how things transpired at the Sharks, but I've got no doubt Flanagan could get more out of our mob than Madge, and I'm pretty confident we would play with some type of structure and shape in attack and defence. Above all else, we need fresh assistant coaches to come in with the new coach.
The only coaching staff I'd be keeping is the KOE coach and Wayne Lambkin from Flegg.
Flanagan sides were pretty dour, would fight over a bone and win 14-12 in ugly matches. Was that him or his playing group of Lewis, Ennis, Gallen etc.
Our team couldn’t play like that.
Yeah I know, it was a real trademark of his coaching style, really get into the grind and bash the opposition until you crack them. I'd also like to see Hartigan and Pascoe out the door - I think Pascoe has done some very good things for the club off the field - Hartigan, I'm less certain about any highlights he's had since being at the club, but they are both intertwined with achieving success on the field and I reckon they've both had a shocker this year.
As far as CEO's go, I think you need to target people with astute business acumen, people who know how businesses run and what it takes to generate investment, income and longevity. Above all else, I think the CEO doesn't really need to focus about what's happening on the field so much as opposed to making the club successful off the field - develop a business plan and set about achieving it. Leave the player performance to the Football Manager, coaches and development staff - that's their specialty.
The football manager needs to be as equally switched on and someone who has a keen eye for talent, and I'd be looking at recently retired players who have a keen understanding of the game - this is where I'd take a punt on the likes of Farah, Lawrence - two guys who both obtained good educational qualifications at the Tigers and understand the modern game and have a keen eye for identifying talent and being able to sell the club in contract negotiations. Marshall is much maligned on here these days, but he's pretty sharp between the ears also and would probably make a decent football manager, but that's a separate conversation. I think having contemporary rugby league experience in this role is important.
If I compare us to the top sides, it’s just a given that they have a lot of cash in the bank. You don’t hear people talking about their management and their business skills. What you hear is Russell Crowe entertaining players at his ranch, Craig Bellamy arranging players work with tradies to develop their ethos, Nick Politis golfing with players or sorting out their new choppers.
I think we need management that put away the corporate spin and make players feel loved, roll out the welcome mat, not some made up vision of being a ‘destination’. I don’t really know what goes on behind the scenes but that doco just made the club appear like a gimmick.
