PAUL SIRONEN NAMES HIS TIGERS TEAM OF THE 80S
29/07/2010 11:47:56 AM

Rugby league legend Paul Sironen has today chosen his 'Balmain Tigers side of the 80s'.

As part of the Wests Tigers 'Back to the 80s' match theme against the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks at Leichhardt Oval this Saturday night, Sironen today blogged with The Daily Telegraph to name his Tigers team.

Here it is:

Fullback: Garry Jack
Wing: John Davidson
Centre: Tim Brasher
Centre: Ellery Hanley
Wing: Larry Corowa
Five-eighth: Garry Schofield
Halfback: Gary Freeman
Lock: Wayne Pearce ©
Secondrow: Paul Sironen
Secondrow: Bruce McGuire
Prop: Steve Roach
Hooker: Benny Elias
Prop: Steve Edmed

Interchange:
Mick Neill
David Brooks
Andy Currier
Kerry Hemsley

Tigers fans, do you agree with Paul Sironen's team? Post your comments ......

This should be interesting......Got me thinking Wests side TBA.....

Edmed?

really?

Kinda like Fitzhenry you cannot argue the effort he put in, but don't know about best in the whole 80's good…..

No Gary Bridge? though hard to go past Schofield couple of seasons.

I also think Scotty Gale deserves a bench spot.. maybe a little bit sentimental but he used ignite a pretty defensive team sometimes

None of them would make the side today.

Absolute BULLS**T…

Paul Sironen was easily the most destructive ball runner in his prime...
Steve Roach has in spades what some of our forwards lack the most in out&out aggression...
Wayne Pearce was a non-stop tireless worker & one of the fittest blokes to ever play the game...

And then we have the internationals in that team..
The 3 above + Ben Elias, Garry Jack, Tim Brasher... for Australia...
Then there was the 'Wiz' Gary Freeman for the Kiwis...
And Ellery Hanley & Gary Schofield for the Brits...

Your kidding yourself... that team in they're prime would kill our current team...

Beautiful…. I remember the boys walking in with their vinyl gym bags and they would sit down and watch Reggies. They would yell abuse at the match officials just like us and then Sirro would stand up and I'd s#%t myself...

They wernt as fast as today's players, but they were tougher and harder. Most of them looked like Traddies!!!

What year did Corowa hang up the boots?

Steve Edmed = dropped ball

many, many times, many many games. The rest looks pretty cool.

Agreed. Steve Edmed wakes up every morning and thanks God for $uper League!! I'd rather Lee Crooks or Hemsley. When the big names left Steve was found wanting a bit but still a good prop.

Saw Edmed the other day, coaching in balmain Jnrs

I must say the pic on the website of sirro minus the electrical tape is rare

Very good side he has picked but you would have to pick Buckets to start with Edmed on the bench we had 4 of the Australian forward pack in those days how times have changed.

I'd have Scott Gale ahead of Mick Neill on the bench as Scotty had a bit more variety and could attack from anywhere, whereas Neill was a renowned boot lace tackler. Very big and tough forward pack Balmain had back in the 80's, some of that aggression now wouldn't go astray.

Hahahaha….All you Balmain boys fret not.....Mick Neil and the Gale Brothers were Western Suburbs Magpies loooong before they were Tigers.......

So to give some balance to Sirro's team....

Wests Magpies Team of the 80's ...well IMO anyway...

1. Wayne Smith
2. Warren Bolland
3. Brett Gale
4. Ross Conlan
5. Graham Mackey
6. Terry Lamb
7. Mick Neil
8. John Donnelly (C)
9. Allan Fallah
10. Bruce Clark
11. Bob Cooper
12. Cameron Blair
13. Jim Leis
14. Ron Giteau
15. Tom Arber
16. Paul Merlo
17. Terry Leabeater
18. Scott Gale

I like how Sirro picks himself lol.

Out of that team i'd love to have Sirro, Jack, Elias, Hanley, Brasher, McGuire and maybe Roach in our current team…..
