'Inconsolable' Todd Payten out for season
Josh Massoud From: The Daily Telegraph September 23, 2010 12:00AM

TODD Payten was inconsolable last night after suffering a suspected broken ankle in a training mishap that's forced him out of Saturday night's grand final qualifier against the Dragons.

Payten rolled his ankle during a sprint drill and there was speculation the culprit may have been a stray tennis ball.

Teammates feared the worst after hearing a crack when Payten collapsed. Unable to walk, he was taken straight from Concord Oval and rushed to a nearby medical centre for scans.

Tigers doctor Donald Kuah was reviewing the X-rays late last night, but Payten is certain to miss the ANZ Stadium blockbuster and is at long-odds to play again this season should the Tigers progress without him.

"We were doing 20m shuttle runs in groups and Toddy just went down like he'd been hit by a sniper," one Tigers player said.

"We all looked around and he was lying in agony.

"They [the training staff] had to help him off the field.

"It doesn't look good and the boys were all shattered for Toddy.

"But what we can we do? We have to get on with it and beat the Dragons."

Payten's absence, however, is the last thing the Tigers need in their quest to upset the premiership favourites before an expected 70,000-plus crowd at Olympic Park.

Star players Bryce Gibbs (foot), Robbie Farah (calf) and Gareth Ellis (back) have all been rested so far this week, while half Robert Lui (hip) has also joined his wounded teammates in the hyperbaric chamber.

Fox Sports stats clearly show how important Payten is to the Tigers: The club has won 14 of 19 games in which he has lined up this season, yet only one of the five that he has missed.

Coach Tim Sheens is expected to summon veteran prop John Skandalis into his squad, with rookie benchman Andrew Fifita now a realistic chance to start.

The injury caps an emotional roller-coaster ride for Payten, who has also been sweating on the birth of his second child this week.

Game, set match for prop Payten

A TENNIS ball may have derailed Wests Tigers' premiership hopes.

In a bitter blow, Tigers prop Todd Payten was last night ruled out of the club's preliminary final against St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night after damaging his ankle in a freak training accident.

The 31-year-old, whose partner Julie was expected to give birth to their second child last night, rolled his ankle when he stepped on a tennis ball during a running drill. He was rushed for immediate scans on the ankle, which revealed he may have suffered a slight fracture.

Further tests will be carried out today but Payten is expected to miss up to four weeks with the injury, meaning he would be unavailable for the grand final even if the Tigers beat the Dragons.

Payten's injury only adds to the crisis at the Tigers. A number of players, including captain Robbie Farah and second rower Gareth Ellis, have been limited in training this week due to ongoing problems.

Payten's injury is likely to mean a call-up for youngster Ben Murdoch, although veteran prop John Skandalis could also come under consideration.

"He's absolutely shattered," Tigers football manager Alan Mair said.

"It's no secret that we play our best football when he is on the park. I think the players have got a lot of mental scarring to get over to get back on the job."

The Tigers' record without Payten is abysmal.

Over the past three seasons, they have won 60.7 per cent of games when he has played. Without him, they have won only five games at a mere 27.8 per cent.

The injury conjures memories of the ankle problem which forced former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath out of the second Test of the 2005 Ashes.

McGrath also damaged ankle ligaments after he rolled his ankle on a cricket ball on the morning of the Test.

The Dragons earned a weekend off following their qualifying final win over Manly and the break couldn't have come at a better time for Prop Michael Weyman who has been battling a groin problem.

He has been an integral part of the Dragons march towards a minor premiership this season and he was one of the first players picked for NSW for the State of Origin series this year.

Speaking after Dragons training yesterday, teammate and Dragons backrower Ben Creagh said he was confident Weyman would be leading their charge up front against the Tigers.

"Mick's fine and the week off last week would have helped him a bit," Creagh said.

"He's training fine and he's ready for the game on Saturday.

"He's got a groin injury and he had it last year.

"It's fine at the moment and he's just taking it a bit easy and making sure he's 100 per cent right for the game."

Creagh said he and teammate Beau Scott were looking forward to the challenge of taking on Tigers backrower Chris Heighington and Gareth Elllis respectively.

"I'm up against (Chris) on the weekend and that's going to be a big challenge for myself and Beau Scott on the other side is going to have his hands full with Gareth Ellis as well," Creagh said.

"Their pack gets a few wraps and those two players are very good players and they've got some good front rowers."

A STRAY tennis ball has robbed Wests Tigers forward Todd Payten of a preliminary finals spot and thrown the club's grand final hopes into disarray.

Payten suffered suspected ligament damage when he rolled an ankle in a freak training mishap yesterday, and coach Tim Sheens last night ruled him out of his squad to play St George Illawarra on Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.

''He won't be playing,'' Sheens said. ''He's no chance.

''He was no chance once he hit the ground.''

Payten, who was helped off the training paddock after the injury by club staff, told officials he believed he had trodden on a tennis ball the players had been using to hone their reflexes during training drills.

It is reminiscent of Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath, who was ruled out of the second Ashes Test of 2005 when he trod on a cricket ball during a warm-up.

After an ultrasound on the ankle, club doctor Donald Kuah said Payten had ligament damage but an MRI scan this morning would confirm whether or not there was a fracture. ''I can rule out any major break,'' Kuah said.

Sheens said: ''I don't exactly know what he stepped on but there was something there while Todd was running, but that's not the point.''

Tigers captain Robbie Farah last night described the loss of Payten as ''massive''. And the Herald can reveal why. Statistics show that Payten is as valuable as Farah and five-eighth Benji Marshall. In the past three seasons, the Tigers had a 60.7 per cent winning record with Payten in their side but that drops to 27.8 per cent when he is missing.

In the same period, the Tigers had a 55.2 per cent winning record with Marshall and a 28.6 per cent strike rate without him. With Farah, the Tigers have won 56.3 per cent of matches and only 30 per cent without him.

The Tigers have won just five of their past 18 matches with Payten out of the side. They face a huge task to beat the minor premiers for a place in the grand final.

Payten was reluctant to talk about the mishap but is said to be shattered.

He has played 21 matches for the Tigers this season and Sheens will be forced into rethinking his squad.

He has a ready-made starting replacement in Bryce Gibbs, although the front-rower is only two matches into a return from a fractured kneecap and his training has been severely restricted as a result of a toe injury.

so I guess if he played we would not have been beaten 50-10 by souths

I don't think it's a smokie , as I was passing Concord Oval around 3.40pm , saw the lads training , and decided to sit in the stands and watch , what could only be deceived as a very light training …I saw all on the field , except Gibbs , who was on the sidelines westing a boot , but no signs of Payten .

Lui was running , but very gingerly , and Ellis was running well, but taking it very easy after with the tackling bag work.
Brown looked great under the high bombs Benji was putting up , but Robbie was later icing his calf, and the end of the session.

Benji looked fantastic , and was practicing field goals from 45m out against the wind , and getting some, well from my angle in the stands anyway.

Overall , a light session with Sherns in control in the middle of the pitch....most looked very relaxed & happy. Both Ryan & Lawo kicked field goals from 35 out near the sideline , with Ryan yelling , that's $100 win...bet with someone.

But Payten will be a massive lost , if true , or maybe it's a smokescreen , and went early to be with his wife at the hospital to witness the birth of their child

They let you sit in on a closed training session???

forget about it - no one can replace payten - he is too instumental - shocking news and a big blow to our chances - at least we made it this far.

Very annoying. Seriously that is such poor organisation that a tennis ball can be left on the ground where players are running. Could well be a mistake that cost us the premiership.

I'm sure Tim will have the situation under control. Could be a case of cometh the hour cometh the man. Fifita may be the man to fill the void and play a gerater roll than he otherwise would have. I still think we have the team to beat St.George …. even without Toddy this is still a very strong team.

I have just had very reliable mail that it is a definate Smokescreen!

Todd Paytens wife Julie has been in labour since sunday night, she has had a number of complication with the birth.

Todd's mind has been elsewhere all week so sheens gave him a number of days of to sort out his wife and new child.

Payton will play. This is shifty sheens at his best.

**PAYTEN RULED OUT OF GRAND FINAL QUALIFIER

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens confirmed this morning that prop Todd Payten will miss Saturday night’s Grand Final qualifier against the Dragons after scans last night confirmed the news.
>
You will be able to hear what Sheens had at this morning’s press conference shortly on WTV.

on the NRL news, Fittler said he was there and it doesnt look good and rah rah rah

I am hoping Frazer4Wests is right though
But hoping Julie and new bub is healthy!

I think we can at least take some solace in that when the stats were recorded over the past 3 years, we didn't have the strong junior backups for Toddy that we do today.

Fifita and Murdoch will crank it up a notch. I'm sure of it.

if it is a smokescreen sheens has gone to huge lengths to keep it a secret, all the players must be in on it.

i highely doubt it, i wish it was but i doubt they would start such a huge rumour seeing it probably doesn't worry st george at all.
