Phil gould on the sunday roast

This isnt a sheens bashing thread but i did think of him when hearing this.

On the sunday roast they were just talking about who should replace wallace next week and suggestions came up like dave taylor. Then phil gould came in and said that from his experience you can't manufacture a halfback and that it is 100% a specialist position. He said that with halfbacks it is far better to give a kid who is a natural halfback a go than move a proven first grader out of there regular position and into halfback.

This applies to tim sheens so well. All that time wasted experimenting with morris and marshall at a halfback when we had players who had played halfback in their juniors like moltzen, dunley, lewis and even head last year.

Sometimes I wish gould was our coach.

You obviously missed, or choose not to mention that Gould said that he HAD MADE THAT MISTAKE HIMSELF MANY TIMES…...but of course that wouldnt fit the agenda.

Glenn

Gus also said halfway through the year that it didnt matter that the tigers wernt winning games becasue we were good to watch. Who cares what he thinks realy.

No actually. I heard that and thats why i said that he said from his experience. And he learnt from that experience, Sheens didn't.

But don't let that stop you from having a go at my post, just because you didn't read it all.

Sheens has made the mistake more than once too.
He doesnt seem to learn from them.

What makes you think he hasn't learned?

Round 26

Also how he has been trying to manufacture Moltzen into a fullback.

And signing no props which means if there are some injuries we'll probably see some manufactured props like the last few years, just like we have seen some manufactured 2nd rowers.

Yeah i was watching and heard him say that and i thought to myself i bet someone comes on this forum and picks that out of the whole conversation.

I know i come on here to so its not saying much about myself but this place is pathetic.

Get off the guys case hes signed for 2010 so just build a bridge.

He gave lui a go and that great for experience he may of done this at the wrong time of the year but it was really a forced move due to a gallant injury.

Coaching in the nrl would be the toughest gig going around.

I immediately thought of Sheens too, with his 2 year experiment on John Morris….

Gould did say he's made the same mistakes, but did they last for 2+ years?

Argh…........what about the 4 year Benji Marshall experiment/development......

Ben Hornby? Fullback to halfback. There's one example.

Yeh,and it is no coincedence Saints go out backwards in september, you need a decent halfback.

Then how about D Lockyer Fullback =5/8?

Glenn

Your talking about one of the games legends there Glenn and even he took a while to adapt.

He doesnt seem to learn from them.

Nor will he in 2010 unless others take control of selections.

Strap yourself for a year of 2006, 07, 08 and 09 all combined for 2010.

You must remember that Phil Gould had Brad Fittler at 5/8 in all of his teams at the Roosters, so he could have put the Harold Matthews halfback in the side and he still would have gone alright.

Its working though isn't it. The kid has talent.

Plus he has won us plenty during the last 4 years.
