EX-NRL STAR KNOCKED TO THE GROUND IN PUB BRAWL
Former NRL player Nathan Merritt would have made people “fear for their safety” during a brawl outside a bar, court documents reveal.
The former South Sydney star was at the Madison Hotel, in Surry Hills, with a group of friends early on February 16 last year when an altercation erupted with strangers.
Merritt was left bleeding from the head and mouth following the fight.
“He did use unlawful violence towards unknown victim by conduct such that a person of reasonable firmness, if present at the scene, would have feared for their safety,” the documents say.
The fight was sparked after bouncers tried to remove a man about 6am, the statement of agreed facts state.
He then instigated a physical altercation with a group of people before setting his sights on Merritt about 15 minutes later, gesturing “aggressively” .
The man managed to break free of security guards and advanced towards Merritt.
“At this point, (Merritt) is captured running towards the unknown male,” the documents state. Merritt managed to throw a punch before he was knocked to the ground.
His shirt was torn by a second man who proceeded to punch him in the head.
Merritt is captured on video going back up to the two men, with the second one again punching him in the head.
“CCTV shows (Merritt) bleeding from his forehead and mouth,” the documents state. “Security continues pushing away the unknown males.”
A third man also landed a punch to Merritt’s face before bouncers managed to break up the brawl. Merritt then walked to Prince Alfred Park where he was stopped by police, who issued him with him a move-on direction.
He was arrested two days later when police phoned him and asked him to attend Mascot Police Station.
Merritt has pleaded guilty to one count of affray.
