Player signings around the Grounds

I'm not shedding any tears for Manly but just the whole randomness of who gets classed as medically retired and who doesn't is utter BS. Watmough had dodgy knees long before he signed with Parra, it was their risk, it backfired yet they get compensated. Its crap.
You don't have to be a Rhode's Scholar to figure out that if WT applied for it for one of our injured players we would have no hope in hell of getting the compensation. Roosters, Broncos, Titans on the other hand? You bet your arse they would get it.

Former Penrith Panthers player Chris Grevsmuhl returns to football with Orange CYMS

IT won’t be the bright lights of ANZ Stadium, but former Penrith forward Chris Grevsmuhl will return to rugby league this weekend when he dons the boots for Orange CYMS.

The Daily Telegraph can confirm Grevsmuhl has been cleared to play for CYMS in the annual West Wyalong Knockout after training with the Group 10 side for the past month.

The ex-Panther and Rabbitoh has temporarily moved to Orange with his fiance after requesting a release from the Panthers on compassionate grounds to deal with a personal issue.

CYMS captain-coach and former NRL hooker Michael Sullivan expects Grevsmuhl’s presence to significantly help his side win the 15,000 prizemoney on offer.

“Chris is really keen to play and he has been enjoying training,” Sullivan said.

“He has got the potential to play five-eighth with his ball playing skills and his hole running ability, so I think he would handle it on his ear in the country comp.

“Chris has been helping out at training and he has been invaluable. He is quite a shy bloke, but he has got some good ideas and I’ve been picking his brains a fair bit as well.”

It comes as Grevsmuhl looks set to return to the NRL this season with the ex-Panther aiming to receive a clearance from the Integrity Unit in the coming weeks.

The Townsville-born product is ready to play again, but he requires approval from the NRL via psychological reports to take the field.

Grevsmuhl won’t rejoin Penrith this season, but he has plenty of clubs interested in his services.

This includes the Gold Coast, who have publicly announced their desire to sign the emerging Queensland forward on a second-tier contract.

Newcastle have also held discussions with Grevsmuhl, who signed with Penrith in May after being granted a release from South Sydney.

He left Redfern in controversial circumstances, which intensified when he labelled Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire a “mind games specialist”.

The 2015 indigenous All Stars representative then put this media storm aside to play 14 games for the Panthers last season.

Sullivan has no doubts Grevsmuhl has the ability make an NRL comeback, but offered a word of warning.

The CYMS’ captain-coach has been a mentor for emerging forward during his time in Orange, urging him to make the most of his time at the top.

And Sullivan should know.

His 116-game career with the Northern Eagles, Cronulla, Warrington and Canterbury was severely impacted by a serious gambling addiction, resulting in significant debt.

Every player that leaves the game for off field dramas should be forced to go play at Newcastle when they come back. They might actually have a decent team then…

Newcastle beat us once, their only win, and almost beat us again last year, so we could put our hand out as well.

I would give Grevsmuhl a go..would be cheap and when in form has some of the attributes we lack in the back row..

Grevsmuhl Is still young and wouldn't be commanding much coin. He played some very good games for Souths. I saw him single handedly tear through Manly one time at Brookie. Can't remember any of our backrow doing that since Ellis. We have some good young prospects in the backrow but not much depth apart from Edwards. He would be a gamble in his current predicament but if we can fit him into the cap..why not.

The way I see it, if they are not top shelve save the cash and keep trying to bring some of the kids up to standard, but as I said if we had cap space and a real class backrower, winger or centre were up for grabs that would be different.

If Newcastle ended up with every NRL player that was in trouble, they would have to have a cap limit like the Roosters.

I wouldn't do that without being armed with a reliable account of what happened between him and Penrith.

He's a Queenslander and the Titans are after him - wouldn't even bother to compete trying to sign him.

He's twice chased the money in Sydney, he'd probably do it again…

I see Mitchell Pearce has extended his contract with the Roosters for a further 2 years till 2019..

With Moses Keary young Connor Watson their halves will have plenty of competition for spots…

Oh and Wicky has had to Welease Wederick Lee and Wensom..Wederick is tipped to go to the Sharks while Wensom is off to the Wowboys...

Fensom to the Cowboys is pretty stupid unless they're going to move Taumalolo to prop and plonk Fensom at lock for 60+ minutes a game.

I'm glad we haven't been linked to Edrick Lee…who is going to take that wing spot? Ottio is injured unfortunately else he'd have been good to see in first grade. Jordan Turner? Or Nick Cotric?

Id prefer to give Suli to chance at wing ahead of Lee. Having said that..Lee over Rankin. A tall winger would have been good for our two halves.

Why is it when other clubs need to move on players duevto cap issues, it's all lovey Dovey between club and player and off they go without any dramas… when they WT try to do the same the proverbial hits the fan...
