Playmaker combinations coming along nicely: Miller
AJ Carr

Thursday 21 February 2013 9:22 AM

Wests Tigers halfback Jacob Miller has been in and around the NRL squad for years, but new coach Mick Potter has now given the NYC winner his first genuine opportunity at nailing down a regular position.

Miller has trained all preseason with the number seven on his back and his combination with star play makers Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah has come a long way.

"The combination is coming along nicely," said Miller. "We've spent the preseason together and the longer we spend on the field together the better we'll be in the coming weeks.

"It's good, I'm a natural organiser and I can get the team around the park.

"When Benji wants the ball and he wants to do his thing, I can get him the ball when he needs it."

Miller is just the latest in a long list of Wests Tigers players to say the preseason under Mick Potter has been the hardest in recent memory with the halfback relishing in his level of fitness in the defeat of Parramatta.

"It felt good out there," said Miller. "Personally I felt very fit, probably the fittest I've felt in a long time.

"I think the boys have had a very good summer. We've trained probably the hardest we've trained in a while so there shouldn't be too many excuses come the season.

"I'm looking forward to playing the Roosters for the Foundation Cup.

"I think we've had a pretty good preparation this week and coming off a not so bad game against Parramatta on the weekend, so things are looking alright."

I like his confidence. Hopefully he is given the control he requires this year and isn't afraid to call over Farah and Marshall.

Sheens showed no faith in the kid, gave him a couple of half baked goes in first grade where he either started on the bench or finished on the bench.
He was given no licence to do or try anything, now is his chance with the coach showing faith and letting him play his natural game.

I remember one of his few games in FG under our last mystro, he was plonked on the left edge for the whole game with ball going right 90%, on the very odd time he go it we were coming off our line deep in enemy territory and he was on a hiding second to nothing.

Anyway as said in the article he has been around the fg squad for years now, trained a full pre season, so now is his chance to grab the no7 and it will be his last chance with young Brooks breathing down his kneck

The game against the Titans. Kicked the ball out on the full, got shut out for the rest of the game.

Probably the game that stands out for me was when (I can't remember who we even played ) when Sheens must of switched it round for the last 20 and we had Miller at dummy half ,Farah at 1st reciever and Benji at 6

No wonder he was slightly confused about his role in the side

The first sentence in the first reply is what I took out of the article too…..confidence, its clear he knows his coach is showing faith in him....its a different Jake Miller this year.

Many people need to take much notice of this par

"The combination is **coming along** nicely," said Miller. "We've spent the preseason together and the **longer we spend on the field together the better we'll be in the coming weeks**.....

It takes time, some seem to expect rookies to kill it immediately

from the limited action i've seen from miller,i can't say i'm overly excited by his passing game.
wait and see for me,all the other talk is just noise to me.

I posted the same thing the other day. Millers pass seems very slow and loopy, but I have seen very little of him and may have caught him on his weak side.If the weather holds off on Saturday night,we should get a good handle on how Miller is shaping up for 2013\. Iam not going to bag anyone yet, everyone needs a month or so to DE-SHEENS

I tend to agree. I'm yet to be convinced that miller is a 1st grader. I hope I'm wrong and he is a world beater all of a sudden.
I wasn't at the trial against parra and please shut me down if I'm wrong, but the highlights footage of the game didn't give me hope. I didn't see miller do anything and when ayshford picked up that loose and made a break millers support play was quite stupid. He followed ayshford like he was going to tackle him. It was a certain try if he had given more space.
Let's hope he is going to be the right choice there.

Miller has a long way to go, but excepting Brooks who I believe needs some time in the U20's he is the only genuine half option we have.

Potter is doing one thing that Sheens never did, and that was give him a go and give him some control. If he fails then we know for sure and for certain and can move on from there.

Didn't take long for Lui to build up the confidence to over-rule Marshall and Farah, Miller will get there as well. I'm sure they'll both be encouraging him to make his voice heard

Let's not get to carried away with the Sheens bashing. Miller was very young at the time of his foray into FG.

I am a big Miller fan based on his efforts in defense. In the games I saw. He gives it a big go and came up with a few one on ones that you would forgive a young number 7 for missing.

This guy is who we need and should see out 2012\. We as club will reap the rewards in years to come.

I think its a safe assumption that Miller's career was going down the same road Mullany's career went until Sheens was sacked

Don't think it is Sheens bashing, it is simply recounting how he handled Miller, which clearly didn't work.

Along with others I believe he is our best option this season and that he will go well if given the same patience shown to Lui. Miller has every reason to impress this year, he is off contract, a coach willing to give him a go, natural halfback talent, and on-field attitude in defence.

Although he is a confident young bloke, saying he can run the side is easy to say, running the side may take some more getting used to so we need to show him patience.

Spot on…I hope he is given time by the fans...I'm prepared to give him at least until round 15....watch him really improve at the back end of the year(when it counts)...

We are lucky in that Brooks is coming along nicely if Miller doesn't cut it,so we won't see any Benji to half Fulton,Lawrence,Ayshford to 5/8th crap that Sheens use to pull.

spot on it took lui a long time to get it right miller has to be given the same time he is very young but gee he has had a good grounding so far,now a step up to first grade good luck young man

Who would take a risk in resigning Miller now for another 3 years or would you wait to see how he goes in 1st grade and take the risk of other clubs making a serious play for him if he ends up killing it in 1st grade? tough choice , i would want to resign him ASAP so his market doesn't increase as much . just my thoughts….

Me neither but clearly he is our only option at this stage.

Then again, Souths play with a halfback who does nothing but kick and can't put a player through a hole to save his life and they get away with it.

I think Miller needs 12 weeks of consistent FG to judge his game properly.
