Please Don't Take Shortcuts

This goes out to all the senior players like Bateman, Api, Sezer, Klemmer, Douehi, Naden etc.

We gotta stop taking short cuts. Stop:
1. Running out of the line for a big takle
2. Speading it from a slow PTB
3. Going for the intercept when we are covered
4. Risking a penalty to slow down the ruck

Just all these low % plays, especially early in the game. There is only one way to win games consistently. You HAVE to win the physical battle.

We lose the phyiscal battle early and all of a sudden these penalties, errors and low % plays come on and it is the senior players are the most guilty of it.

Hunt as a pack, one straight line, work as a team, come up in a line and slide in a line. We have these lapses way too often.

Yes good assessment of what is happening.
The young blokes are impulsive and maybe a bit dumb at times…the older blokes are losing us the games. The hard yakka is not being taken on by them.

I put it down to one of two things. Not as physically fit as the other teams so they start taking shortcuts out of fatigue.
Or not as mentally tough as they should be, always looking for the easy option. Either way it breeds bad habits and we don't need these habits infecting our younger players.

Obvious early the whole team weren’t up for the slog.

Yep. The disappointing thing was that they didn’t look like they wanted to tough it out and play with any fight or aggression. They were not individually up for a battle and were lucky the Roosters were in second gear.
As for our attack it was often so one out and lacked any depth or off the ball effort. Players just standing flat footed or with hands on hips watching the ball carrier - they didn’t even want the ball. We got man handled on many occasions because we were so easy to read.

Yep. A lot of sideways shifting with nobody wanting to run straight into contact. We should have conceded 60 plus given the sin bins were dubious too.

Yep that's the point of this thread. The long shifts will work 2/10 times, the jamming in defence will lead to a line break more often than not. Klemmer continues to try to milk penalties when it's not required. Bateman consistently keeps his hands in the ruck or on the ball when we are losing to try to loosen the ball.

When you're winning by 10, these are smart plays, but when you're losing by 20, these are desperation plays.

Api has been one of the best signing by this club but he continues to jump in front of the defensive line to slow down the attacker. It's a very courageous play but what we need from him is to lead the line speed while staying in the line and getting 3 men in the tackle rather than his half tackle followed by 2 men in a tackle.

All of this doesn't happen every play, but we just need to stop with these short cuts especially in the developing days.

I used to hate when Penrith would hold down markers and Parra would whinge to the ref but they did that off the back of playing physically strong football and in order to get that extra edge. We are so far behind that these extra edges won't help us right now.

We need our leaders to do the right thing 99/100 times so that the kids learn this is how you play. Winning will happen slowly, we will win 6 games this year, then 7 then 8 etc.

100 percent. The coaching crew need to make sure they get the short cuts out of their games or like I posted earlier it could start rubbing off on the younger guys.

The reason we give away so many hip drop penalties is because they go past us and we end up tackling them from behind out of desperation. Api is one of the worst at this. Almost half of his tackles I feel if the defender gets up holding his leg, it's gonna be a hip drop.

In the modern games, you just have to hit them from the front and aim low. Our team has some tall buggers in Stefano, Klemmer, Pole, Matamua and even our halves/ centres are tall (funnily enough our wingers are short..). We simply don't get down low enough in many tackles due to fatigue and we aren't able to put them to the ground.

It doesnt help when the ref's are taking short cuts and using the WestsTigers as their whipping boys .. fair dinkum ref the Doueihi the tackle that got him sent to the bin for 10 mins .. i saw at least 5 or 6 hip drop tackles by the Rorters that were similar or worse than Doueihi's .. and because our players didnt react or stay down for penalty .. nothing happened .. !! Every game on the weekend we saw hip drop tackles and no one but us got sent to the bin .. and Api's tackle .. never stuck his hands between the players legs to lift him .. 10 mins in the bin for that was crazy .. but once again the refs thought its only the Tigers better send him .. ridiculous .. scandalous .. conspiracy even .. !! You see a hundred of those tackles like Api's every game and only a penalty is given .. and thats if there is a penalty ..

I swear the ref's use us as an easy way out .. we seem to be the only team that gets players sent to the bin on a regular basis .. and for some of the most ridiculous reasons for a penalty .. !! they dont dare do it to the other teams .. maybe Richo as the CEO has to come and voice his opinion and call the ref's out about sending only our players .. !!

Should not Benji be addressing these or is he happy to continue safe in his coach cocoon?

Couldn't agree more, I get having leniency on the younger guys who are still learning, but he should be hammering guys like Klemmer and Bateman who should know better.
