PNG Chiefs discussion

Well..they can’t force him not to go …so you are correct there

They can force PNG to record $1.1m on their cap for him even if they paid him less ..the NRL should have done similar for DCE ..

Anyway …like I said it appears Young is not going there now
Well the NRL can do anything they please in policing the salary cap, but they should not force an opposition's proposed costs onto someone else's salary cap. Terrible idea.

It's a well-established issue - Tedesco, for example, took much less to join the Roosters. Despite the harm it caused us I cannot accept that the "highest bid" thus denotes the actual salary cap value assigned. It heavily incentivises speculative or disingenuous bidding.

And it's easy to prove by hypothetical. Say Perth Bears struggle next year and decide to go all-out for Nathan Cleary for 2028. They offer him $1.7M. Penrith have the cash but they don't have that kind of space under their salary cap.

Therefore the newest or worst or youngest or cheapest roster in the comp can make speculative high-value plays to, if not attain the target player, cause injury to the incumbent side.

The NRL are dealing with some unique circumstances with PNG’s impact on the player market ..personally I don’t have a problem with the “fairness” of them taking this particular approach in these circumstances in respect of what is being reported with Hudson Young …also …the point is that each case be assessed on its own merits .. I wasn’t trying to make a case that the rule shoild apply in all circumstances, although I can see where perhaps originally you could have interpreted my comments that way,,,.you can come up with your hypothetical example , and they can treat that one differently should they choose ..

Speaking of which ..,Any comment about my point of DCE’s salary halving in one year ? He was still an Origin player in 2025 so his form didn’t fall off a cliff

In the modern game Mark Gasniier and his come back to league sparked the fair market price on /in the salary cap shemozzle. Its a woke world and those that squeal the loudest and throw more resources at it will be heard the loudest eventually.
People here sook about the salary cap being out of wack, its not the cap its the 3rd parties - which where capped when 1st introduced ,my belief is its no longer , that distorts the playing field .
Rules are made to be manipulated ,which our club is slow to learn,or under financed to compete
PNG and the leg up they get just reminds me that there is rulz 4 sum ,and not others,
As the years go by this game just gets less appealing

I was only responding to a concept of NRL compelling clubs to accept a certain salary cap load based on offers from other clubs. I don't think it works and I don't like the idea of case-by-case assessments. All I think it does it hollow-out the concept of the salary cup and highlight the flaws in the mechanism.

I'm not clear about your DCE comments, I don't know the data off-hand.

1- I believe flaws in the system should be highlighted

2- DCE has played for Manly for about a decade on a $1milliom plus a year …he was permitted to join the roosters last offseason on about half that amount , even though he was still an Origin level player

Wth is this?
It sounds like a mistake made by the execs leading the NRL and PNG, or maybe a play against Super Rugby.

Who knows, it could have even been Albo’s bright idea... 😉

Whilst most adults will be able to tell the difference, kids growing up could easily be swayed away from rugby in NZ because of that name.

Their intellectual property and 30-year history as a rugby club in NZ are central to the Chiefs case. Given the similarities between league and rugby, that is likely to be a key part of their case if it ends up in court.

Im more referring to what i quoted...their away games in NZ??

At.one ground...basically a.2nd home.ground?
Or.is.it a.typo

Looks like the Chiefs will have to change their name and colors. Waikato Chiefs and Super Rugby have given the NRL a cease and desist notice.

bs to Waikato
plenty of tigers raiders warriors in other sports
doubt they win that argument

It doesn't make sense, unless it is a strategic play to gain ground on Super Rugby in NZ.

I read in the SMH that their reasoning is that there is a large Polynesian community in NZ that would support PNG during their away games.

The problem with that argument is that Papua New Guineans are Melanesian, not Polynesian. The last census only listed 1,290 PNG born residents living in NZ.

The bigger issue is that you can't have two teams with the same name and the same colours playing similar games in the Pacific.

That's the thing: "other sports" means sports like AFL, EPL, NFL, NBA or MLB. They're all very different sports, with very different fan bases.

I follow both the NRL and Super Rugby, and I'm sure many others do too.

Both rugby and rugby league were founded in England. Rugby was created in Warwickshire in 1845, and then the clubs in Yorkshire split away in 1895 and changed some of the rules.

Ultimately, the games are very similar, and that will be the argument.

The biggest issue is you cant have a team.play all away games at one ground that isnt a.home to any.other opponent,.effectively making it a.2nd home ground for them
