Yeah but if the law enforcement can impersonate you using tech, the money you have moved by tech is not safe.

These powers cannot be used on ad nauseum as you seem to think.

The Federal Government passed a bill last Wednesday.  The Federal Police can now log into your social media, email ect.  Alter it the way they want and pretend to be you if they suspect you or “terrorism” or if they think you will do illegal activities.

Of course that won’t be abused, without accountability.

By “your” you mean someone committing a relevant offence? You still Ned a warrant - those are more difficult to find obtain than most people think.

That’s the point they don’t have to be committing an offence anymore, the Feds only have to think they will. This is worse than phone tapping, they can actually impersonate you, change your settings, respond to emails as you. This will be abused. It is a gross invasion of privacy and goes beyond just surveillance.

TI and SD have always been suspected of committing a relevant offence. But you can’t just have a hunch you need to present some evidence for your suspicion. It’s one of the most scrutinised areas in the country.

Once you give law enforcement the ability to impersonate someone that is stepping over the line. That’s a whole new paradigm that is open to abuse like nothing before it. I’ll be making my view known at the next ballot.

You mean like deep undercover operatives? Police have always been able to do that. We’ll have to disagree on this - I’m for it.

Yes we disagree. Undercover operatives don’t impersonate you, they infiltrate using other means/identity. There is a huge difference.

I am vehemently opposed to giving law enforcement such sweeping powers.

The powers are sorely needed. You might have a different view if you knew how much damage is done to the Australian community and economy through cybercrime and the threats Australia faces on a daily basis. The problem is most of the community is uneducated on such issues until it directly affects them.

Yeah I know what DCOs do. I don’t see the big difference or indeed with impersonating people to catch say pedophiles or drug importers. I’m all for anything that helps stop drug importers, money launderers and whoever else. If you’re in the frame for the kind of offence you need to get those warrants I couldn’t care less about your “rights”.

Dutton will be looking forward to abusing the new law.I wouldn't trust that bloke in anything he says or does.

Dutton isn’t the Home Affairs minister anymore. Even if he was I doubt he’d be personally involving himself in AFP or ACIC investigations.

don't let that minor truth change Jad's fears of the Liberal party

That's not entirely fair. They still have some reasonable people amongst their number and remained a party of balance until two decades ago when they decided that on the back of Pauline Hanson, demonising asylum seekers could be utilised as an election strategy for a government falling in the polls.

The beginning of the Tampa incident had it's 20th anniversary on Thursday last week, the same day that the suicide bombers attacked refugees at Kabul airport, killing a couple of hundred or so, including 13 US service people.

Trouble is they are basically controlled by a few way to the right and have a disgusting man as their leader. We can only hope that there are enough people out there that are wise to the machinations of Morrison, Murdoch, Palmer, Stokes and the like, along with those conservatives with a conscience.

No, not at all. First reason is I can't see the current climate favouring the Coalition. That's in spite of incumbency favouring Palaszczuk, Andrews and McGowan in recent state elections. Second, and much more important, How could you hold elections in over half the country without creating super spreader risks everywhere. Elections are not great opportunities for social distancing.

I would never be surprised at the lengths Morrison would go to if he thought it advantaged himself, including sacrificing others. Still, that option seems out there and particularly so whilst covid remains a threat to children.

I expect that the newly vaccine approved cohort of 12 to 16 year olds will be included in revised 70 and 80% opening up numbers as his targeted polling will suggest it.

Any decent leader would be in an extremely dominant position during this pandemic and the former liberal staffer Niki Savva says it well with: **“Morrison has a habit of allowing problems to become crises before mishandling them.”** in describing why he is not a shoe in.

Poor old Nikki, I don't think any Liberal would ever measure up in her eyes to Peter Costello or John Howard. She's not a big fan of Morrison.

To be fair it isn't only her, as we heard from some high profile members previously and Gladys basically confirmed at yesterdays presser that Morrison was an "evil bully".

For mine, no reasonable informed person could support this man.

That may well be. The latest polls suggest Morrison is going off with the public but polls are notoriously inaccurate. Labor's problem is not so much Morrison but who they put up against him. First they tried the totally unelectable Shorten and now they're going with the equally unelectable Albanese. If they go to their best reserve grade players they come up with Plibersek and Bowen, also unlikely to win an election.

Spy agencies have a long track record of abusing their power for political purposes, and they already have too much power.

Australia's (bipartisan) response to Snowden's revelations was to give even more power to such agencies, including passing the ridiculous metadata laws. 'Orwellian' gets over-used, but that law really is. A dragnet record of the electronic history of every single Australian, which if anything probably makes us less safe as it is a treasure trove of data that would attract foreign powers like China.

The power to impersonate people is the cherry on top.

This is rather disturbing

Sorry Mike but you don't know what you're talking about on this one.

No doubt, but I see this is only the first step. This will be abused by those in power.

Yeah but if the law enforcement can impersonate you using tech, the money you have moved by tech is not safe.

These powers cannot be used on ad nauseum as you seem to think.

When push comes to shove it will be abused by those with vested interests.
