A 2nd Generation reactor (we are now building 5th generation reactors, not to mention Thorium-based designs), Fukushima 1 was designed and built in the 60's to withstand a magnitude 7.9 quake and a 6.5m wave. Remember during that period very little was known about Tsunamis.

The quake was measured at almost 9.0 (many, many, MANY times more powerful than 7.9) and there are reports that the wave that took out the fail-safe diesel generators reached 12m in height - that's almost the height of a 5 floor building of water.

Like Divine says, the gravitas of the situation can't/shouldn't be dismissed, but funding for nuclear reactor projects shouldn't cut.

Remember post-Sept 11? Remember how everyone said that there would be no more skyscrapers and no more air industry?

I very much agree with that Miranda article. We have a chance to be active rather than a nation that see's a problem but is too scared to resolve it.

Being fair, I went up to each person handing out How-To-Vote cards today and asked them all "Why should I vote for your party?"

*****LABOR - Verity Firth******

me: "why should I vote for Labor?"

Labor lady: "because the O'Farrell is shit"

me: "ok, but what policies does Labor have that should entice me to vote for them for this electorate?"

Labor lady: "Labor will continue to supply great public transport for the area"

me: "But it takes one and a half hours to get from Balmain to the CBD, that's an average speed of 4km/h."

Labor lady: "Have a look around the world and the rest of Australia, our public transport is amazing here in Sydney thanks to Labor"

me: "um, Melbourne has an extensive tram network, London and Tokyo have huge Metro webs and Athens, a corrupt city built on one of the most archeologically important cities in ALL TIME, in a heavily in-debt country is able to build three huge subway networks in less than 8 years with one more being built… explain that?"

Labor lady: "Labor is the natural government of NSW"

... at which point I walked away

********GREENS - Jamie Parker******

me: "why should I vote for the greens"

Greens lady: "because the greens will provide high level educational services to preschools"
\

*****INDEPENDENT - Marie Sheehan******

me: "why should I vote for her?"

guy in red shirt: "I have no idea, i'm just handing these things out"

Good to see Marie has the right people in place to sell the undecided voters.

Looks like the Greens have that seat sewn up too. The only thing worse than Labor returning to government is the Greens getting a substantial say.

Honestly, the Indie probably makes the best case there.

Two of the most satisfying aspects of the NSW Lib victory tonight is that it looks like the Greens will not win a seat and that a few of the country Independents got their backsides smacked as well.

Yeah cause People Skills Tony never lies. Unless its something not in his notes. Then by his own admission you can't trust him.

I agree with you here Yoss. Sometimes decisions have to reflect the change in environment and voters should judge on results rather than promises. I've got no problems with Julia changing her mind.

The voters only have themselves to blame when they knew there was a coalition between the Greens and Labor prior to the election. Of course something like this was going to happen with Julia needing the Greens to form government.

On the state too, it seems like Barry won't have power in the upper house…. I hope we aren't in for another long 4 years.

I'll concede that Abbott is hardly a saint, but I don't think he would sell his soul to the Greens. Gillard seems bent on selling us down the proverbial with the Carbon tax just to appease de-facto deputy PM Brown and his merry band of idiots after vehemently denying (as well as Trout-lips Swan,) that it would ever come about.

Unfortunately Yoss, the lies don't stick as much when you're in opposition.

Na Abbott has sold his sould to the Christian Right.

It is funny listening to the blame game though.

Both Labour and Coalition governments at the Federal level have sold off major assets to make the bottom line look good because the votingpublic is so clueless that is the only figure they concentrate on. Nevermind that in every one of the public companies that have been sold service costs have gone up, quality has come down and jobs that could be kept in Australia are outsourced to the emerging third world nations
