Just as good to see a few others join O’Dowd and Zimmerman’s voices to drown out some of the darkness that has long controlled the coalition. I don’t extend my thanks as far for Katie Allen, as being a paediatrician, her voice should have long been the loudest.
My local federal member (liberal) also raised issues with the way this fiasco has been handled. It is long overdue that the more moderate liberals took a moral stand on this issue but the cynic in me thinks that is partly due to what happened to the federal seat next to us where Abbott was thrown out at last election.I live in a strong liberal seat but it has very few of the extreme nutters in the electorate.
Serious question…
Do you think that if two people are in Australia on a temporary protection visa, meaning they do not have permanent status and are likely to be asked to leave/deported that if those two people have children here it qualifies them for permanent residency?
Each and every case should be handled on its merits and not some mandatory rule. There should always be common sense applied,*****due you honestly think if they were white poms/yanks overstaying their visa they would have been incarcerated the same way?*****As i said common sense should be applied something our government do not understand
100% if they were white they would have been incarcerated the same way. I frankly find it astounding that you think this happened based on race.
I personally have friends that are eastern european (very white), she had an MBA, he was a Dr, kids in school here, paid massive taxes and fees and when their VISAs ran out they had to leave (he was older than 45). If they didnt they would have been incarcerated for breaking the law. If all they had to do was have a kid here…
If all you had to do was have kids here on a temporary protection visa to get permanent status, EVERYONE would do it.
Tiger5150, IF your friends HAD overstayed their visa and fought it through the courts (which they are entitled to do), do you think the government would have re-opened Christmas Island for just them and detained them there until the case was resolved?
