Game is just over 24 hours away. Given what we saw on Sunday; a few questions still need to be answered.
Firstly, for me, the score is not that important. In fact neither is much related to our attacking structures as I expect that we will not want to expose too much to a team we play again in round 2. I thought our first hit out wasn't too bad - got the cobwebs out and we showed a resonably coordinated approach to the game on both sides of the ball. Galvin tried a bit too hard for mine and although our defence was OK, there were a couple of glaring errors - our failure to shut the gate on a couple of occasions and some of the poor defensive coordination on our right edge/wing and lack of cover..
The key aspects I will be focussing on are:
- Defence:
- Line speed
- Closing the gate
- Change of structure in the red zone
- Cover/Scramble
- Attack them with defence in their red zone.
- Attack
- Ability to get out of our end
- Long/early kicking game
- 40/20 execution
- Control of the middle corridor in the middle third of the field (particulary Bird when he is on)
- Handover of the ball
- Control and execution in their red zone
- Repeat Sets
- Players in motion
From a player persective I am keen to keep and eye on Naden and Toa in the backline and in the forwards how the rotation of Twal/Bird goes and the effectivenss of the May/Pole Hunt/Sione? rotation.
What key points are you looking for out of Friday's game?
