Random thoughts from first 4 rounds

Some random thoughts from the first 4 rounds.

Potter - 4/10\. We have clearly gone backwards in our attack. We haven't scored a single try all year from good attack. Scored several from dummy half and from isolating a single defender. But not one try which you could say was indefensible. It is very concerning. I am also concerned about the selection of Masada and what that means for Harry's judgment. MI has been very poor in state cup. We were a much better side last week when Luani was on he field. I disagreed with going into a game against Manly without Ava but picking MI was crazy. I also haven't seen any great improvements in our defensive structure. I am hoping that will come in the next few weeks. I an greatly concerned about our backrow. That Fults was resigned for 3 years bemuses me. The game has moved past the skillfull, light backrower. I still have high hopes for Harry but at the moment we were a better side under Sheens.

Farah - still taking poor options and over dominating every set near the opposition line. Needs to take less steps from hooker and let Miller and Marshall take more of the reins near the opposition line. Our forwards are playing against a 5m defensive line by the time Farah gets the ball to them. Quick service is the key. Robbie needs to choose his time to go or use the ball more prudently. C Smith have a display of first class hooking last night. Show that often less is more. Farah is a champion player but needs to be a smarter footballer.

Moltzen - proving a lot of doubters wrong. Some very good takes in the past two weeks. Apart from the Uate try in rd 1, has barely put a foot wrong. Still not a strong returner of the football and doesn't jump to take the highball which is a big negative. Teddy should be the number 1 by the middle of the year.

Reddy - too slow for first grade no matter how "safe" he is. He couldn't make the grade iin a ordinary Eels side. Don't know why we think he will turn it around here. If we consider ourselves serious contenders, we need to invest in youth and speed on both flanks.

Marshall - he needs to seriously consider whether he still has the motivation to play at this level. One word "pedestrian" sums up his first 4 rounds.

Miller - he has yet to lock the position up. A lot to like and a lot not. Would help if he had willing runners ready to take an offload from him. Unfortunately, our back rowers, particularly Fulton, don't seem keen on backing up our halves this year.

Ayshford - too slow for the centres. Other sides have worked out his one trick since 2011\. Will never be as effective again. Would like Simona to get a go. We need a faster backline.

Some pretty good points.

I disagree a little with the criticism of Benji and Robbie. Benji has been quiet but he has also made very few mistakes. Robbie has been great.

To be fair on potter he inherited this roster/team. I believe we are better under him than sheens last year. As long as we are improving in 2013, rebuilding and putting the pieces in place to be consistent in 2014 and make a run at a premiership in two years time.

I completely agree with you on marshal. At this rate he doesn't make the kiwi team for the Anzac test. If he keeps it up he should be dropped from first grade by about round 10.

Not a lot to say on Rowdy. His defence has been a disgrace. His attack has been fine with me. One of the few strong runners we have. With Koro outside him, he looks good. I will persist with him for now. But we need to see a huge improvement in D.

I was a little bit critical of Farah. He has been one of our best this season but that is scary. We need him to play us wider from the ruck. The storm forwards get the ball about 5ms wider than we do. We seem to play a very tight channel except when Marshall drifts.

Yep you have nailed it Southerntiger!

Farah needs to get rid of the ball quicker, sometimes you just have to pass the ball Robbie!

Marshall needs pass the ball and throw a few dummies, instead of kicking the ball for chasers most of the time, Ayshford and Lawrence never get the ball on the outside of their oponents.

Potter make sure you always pick 4 forwards on the bench for every game. Yosefa's selection bamboozled me.

Anasta, please put him at halfback, he is wasted in the backrow.

Adam blair, he has got nothing, worst footballer going around.

Going to have a beer now and watch Hvasstan win the Guineas.

Southern tiger, how can potter take any of the blame with the roster he got given, it won't matter what he does as our squad apart from 4 or maybe 5 players wouldn't make first graders anywhere else. There has to be a lot of changes before we will even get close to the 8.We have selfish playmakers a crappy back line that looks pedestrian and forwards that a way to small.

I'm sick of the inside ball that gets us tackled by the opposition markers what is the concept in that . Making it easier for there defenders.

Jimmyz

He gets the blame for the decisions he makes. Picking Iosefa ahead of Ava. Playing both Anasta and Fulton in the starting lineup. Resigning Fults for three years. Picking Reddy ahead of Nofoaluma.

All poor decisions that Potter is responsible for.

I am not writing him off yet. But I am judging him on what I have seen to date.

Yeh drives me crazy. If we used it only once or twice a half it would be effective.

We use it an attempt to tire the markers. It just hasn't worked for 2-3 years.

Southern i agree 100%, but i also want to see his signings this year as that is what will determine his future , as this is Sheens playing roster more or less . I'm sure Farrah would have had assurances of strengthening the team , as he needs to play in a good side to continue being picked for the blues.

Thats just Farah being lazy…. because we dont have a basic attacking structure we revert to under the pump, and hell, who can blame him under the workload anyway. If the numbers 6 and 7 had any idea how to play their roles he wouldnt be so far under the pump.

Utai - not a competitive choice for winger. Has some strong leg drive, etc, has a dig and runs hard… Doesn't contest, gets out jumped, at a severe height disadvantage. Needs to be released ASAP and we need to look into a more suitable replacement.

Prop depth - where is it ? Doing it tough in this department. Woods & Buchanan have been great but we really need another 1 or 2\. With Galloway injured we're looking weaker, no doubt.

Moltzen - been impressive, hope he keeps up the good work and silences the haters.

Potter - Jury isn't out but so far, not so good. Masada Iosefa has no right to be in the first grade team. Surely we had some one better from NSWCUP that could have taking the bench spot.

Disagree with robbie and benji, robbie has been AMAZING and benji has been solid. We need a bit more finishing power from the centres/wing which people like lawrence and reddy lack. I think we should keep reddy since he's reliable as anything but remove lawrence whos time has passed sadly.

Ayshford has done reasonably well this season, definitely remove lawrence before ayshford and bring up simona or brien. I have the feeling simona will get a run soonish.

Get benji to run the ball a bit more, stronger finishing centre and wing e.g. moltz and teddy to FB we should be okay attack wise.

Also, disagree with potter criticism. He was been good at tightening up our defence and getting us to play percentage plays which we DESPERATELY needed. MI has been great in nsw cup hence the promotion, you really think someone as experienced as harry would make such a big call and sub in MI over luani if he wasn't a lot better?

I like what I see and I can see what Potter is trying to do, at least we have won 2 from 4.
Its simple we need forwards who can break the line , give Miller and Marshall the space they need.

Fulton should have never been resigned I like him but his player that really does not fit anywhere.
Utai must go I never want to see him first grade again.
I would like to see Anasta moved to lock so we can utilise his kicking game and benefit from his passing game.
Buchanan and Woods are great but we all know we need more forwards and front rowers.

At best we are side that might scrape into the 8 or run 9th or 10th , we cannot compete with the top sides we just dont have the forwards and Potter needs to get a big broom and sweep out the Dead wood.

We have some of the best Juniors coming through and by next year I hope to see more of them in first grade.

I can't see why everyone thinks fults shouldn't have been resigned? He's been one of our best defenders for years, ten times the player he was before he went away. Heart of a lion and can run a hole with the best of them. Fults and Anasta can't start together though, braith has done nothing for us.

I think I can see where Potter is trying to go with the side and I am all for it. It will be a hard transition with the cattle we have on board right now but long term will reap rewards IMHO.

I disagree about the criticism in this thread of Ayshford & Fulton

Agree with everything you said. Especially resigning Fulton.

I'm pretty happy with where the Tigers are at this stage… I'm enjoying watching Potter, the choices and changes he is trying to instil at the club. Yes, he had a brain-fart on Thursday, but he will never learn new things without trying something different.

The direction we are heading is good. I'm not yet sure what it means for 2013, but I have a strong feeling once we get 4 props in the 17, we might have a late run to the Top 8\. [fingers crossed]

To be critical or suggest changes, I'd like to see changes to the Backrow to give us more strike power and I'd like to see Tedesco in the 13 somewhere. Outside of that, I'm content in allowing the current Team continue in its current progression.
