A much better position for a youngster to get a grounding in first grade. Not many fresh out of school players can handle the defensive challenges at centre, with someone like Tim Brasher being a rare anomaly that could manage it.
Tim Brasher wasn't great defensively at center early on, and let's be honest he came into grade 37 years ago when it was semi professional.
So completely different times.
Not really comparing apples with apples but more apples with cows

Physicality wise, I would agree. However, defensive choice wise, Brasher was pretty well up to speed from the get go for mine, continuing on from his junior days.

Even back coaching against him when he was playing U13's for Burwood United in the newly combined Wests/Balmain comp, he was the one centre/back across that grade that almost always made the correct call.
