Recruitment and retention

The 'Moneyball' movement is about finding market inefficiencies, i.e. finding undervalued players due to their strengths lying outside 'traditional' avenues.
It's not just about using stats - Baseball has been, and will continue to be one of the most meticulously measured sports in the world. Have a look at http://www.fangraphs.com/library/ to get an idea of how advanced their metrics are these days.
As per Nelson's post, it's much easier to measure performance in Baseball given the game is essentially a series of individual, isolated events, rather than the free-flowing nature of Rugby League.
I've no doubt that teams are using advanced stats to recruit and measure performance (no doubt we're behind the times….), but it's not really comparable.

Thanks for that, I lot more complicated than I thought. The piece indicates that it has applications in other sports and I'm sure the cashed up teams are using some form of metric to recruit.

How about we get rid of Warren Mcdonnell & hire someone else lard lad has been there forever.

One of the great unsolved mysteries of the world. Everyone has come and gone but somehow this guy and the water boy survive every year.

I don't see why Joel Thompson isn't a realistic target for a side looking to improve. At this point the Tigers and the Dragons are offering the same thing and considering both sides are in Sydney and we have a much sturdier platform to improve given right conditions in the next couple of years a provocative negotiator would definitely see Joel Thompson sit down to at least have a discussion.

Paul Vaughan is a first grader worthy of a weekly start. I would say that a player of his ability is not seeing the playing time befitting of his talent. You've indicated that he has started the last two weeks on account of an injury to a player who was bought in mid season. What do you think that indicates to him?

Maybe if someone at the Tigers pulled their finger out and spoke to Luciano Leilua we would be in the mix as well.

As for signed players - start grooming now. We need an aggressive recruitment drive across all departments of our club. There is nothing wrong with identifying targets of the right age and playing style and courting them and players like them with a view on joining us at the end of next season. Seeds of doubt will be the key to these players not signing new contracts and considering their options. We are in a position where we can offer genuine first graders and opportunity to start week in week out. If you're a footy player that is hard to turn down.

I am absolutely confident I could convince anyone to play for Balmain so I retain a little bit of hope that the person Balmain employs to do that job could also do the same thing.

Frankly that is fantasy-type stuff.

Thompson has re-signed to Dragons until end 2018\. You want to talk to him now about playing in 2019 - too much of a risk to sign someone that far ahead, and you are making assumptions that he's even interested, just a month after re-signing with his current club.

Vaughan - well now you are speculating on what he thinks and what things mean to him. I appreciate why you would think that way, but speculating on the motivations of players is sort of pointless / cannot be debated?

Wests Tigers courting players… you are talking about offering "genuine" FG players an opportunity to start every week. Is that truly realistic, clubs make those kinds of promises? Because that's the kind of problem many fans would argue Tigers already have - players getting picked each week with little accountability for performance, perhaps because they've previously been told their contracts were first-grade assured. No, I'd rather the club be frank and tough - you play well you start, you play badly you don't.

The following players should be kept: Tedesco, Moses, ET, Woods, Grant, Nofa, Sue
The following players should be moved on: Kev, Milone, Rankin (low cost utility value only), Siro
These blokes need a big year or move them along: Brooks, Simona, Lawrence, Ava, (increased depth leaves him holding others back), Edwards
Re-sign based on performance: Aloiai, Lovett, CheeKam, Littlejohn.

Frankly I would be perfectly happy if we retained that top line and everyone else moved on.

Agree with your calls but re-sign Lovett? ARGH! If we re-sign Lovett then our managers might as well say "we have no ambition".

I don't like lovett but he might improve a fair bit next year… if he doesn't don't re-sign

I don't know how much improvement lovett has in him, but i think sirro is going to turn it around in 2017??

Heard Vaughn is heading to dragons and Luciano will also be kept by them. They have plenty of room in the cap.

Spot on with Luciano, I've heard that Storm may look at Vaughn.

Mose Moase hasn't played for Dragons yet, had the season ending injury in the preseason he'll be a weapon. His another Kasiano in my eyes.

Luciano has signed with the dogs.

2 things come to mind if this is true, why do the dogs want another frontrower, and how do they afford all the upgrades plus sign Brenko Lee to a contract the raiders couldn't match. 😱pen_mouth:

Cause they don't have to pay Hoppa for Sundays. TPA's maybe?

We need to make some changes for 2017!

1\. James Tedesco
2\. David Nofaluma
3\. Tim Simona
4.
5\. Kevin Naquima
6\. Mitch Moses
7\. Luke Brooks
8\. Aaron Woods
9.
10\. JJ Felise
11\. Josh Alioia
12\. Chris Lawrence
13\. Elijah Taylor

14\. Jacob Liddle
15\. Ava Seumanafagnai
16\. Tim Grant
17\. Jesse Sue

Curtis Sironen is a difficult one, has loads of potential but just doesn't seem to work hard for it. Depending on next seasons form, he either works hard and stays or can leave same goes with Brooks!

For next year we need a hooker and centre!

Suggestions for hooker: Baptise, Littlejohn, Segeyaro, Sironen?

Suggestions for centre: Idris, Carlin Anderson (goal kicker), Tom Opiac (would struggle to keep his spot when Reed comes back, Holland (goal kicker), Gagan, Gagai, Mead, Kenner.

Our pack is decent, we've got a lot of depth just need that size which we will get with the players coming up like Paseka, Tatola, Masters etc

If Brooks has another shocker in 2017, let him go and chase Jack Bird hard!

6\. Jack Bird
7\. Mitch Moses

What I would like to see in 2018

1\. James Tedesco
2\. David Nofaluma
3\. Tim Simona
4\. Dane Gagai
5\. Kevin Naquima
6\. Jack Bird
7\. Mitchell Moses
8\. Aaron Woods
9\. Jacob Liddle
10\. Taniela Paseka
11\. Josh Alioai
12\. Esan Masters
13\. Elijah Taylor

14\. Junior Tatola
15\. Ava Suemanafagnai
16\. JJ Felise
17\. Jesse Sue

Players we let go off: Brooks, Sironen, Rankin, Grant, Lovett, Lawrence, Farah

So we're going to move on Lawrence not long after extending his contract?
As far as I know, That exercise didn't work out the way the admin though, the last time they tried it :crazy

We have to sign a few low cost options given our situation.

Outside Backs: Tony Satini 6'4 100kgs (Manly), Tautau Moga 6'4 103 kgs(Cowboys), Vai Toutai 6'1 101 kgs(Eels)
Forwards: Abraham Papali 6'2 115kgs (Roosters), Kelepi Tanginoa 5'10 102kgs (Eels)
Hooker: Kieran Mosely (Titans), Kurt Baptiste (Raiders)

We need a hooker, winger, centre and second rower.

There are some good players available somehow, we need to get rid of Lovett, Siro, Ballin, Rankin over the offseason. They are not first graders. Siri has potential but his time is up.

One NRL article suggests knights might be trying to move Mamo on. What do people think about him as a wing option?

Take him in a flash, but I get the feeling he would attract plenty of interest.

At first I thought he's was going to be a star, but he was very disappointing this season. My missus is a Knights fan, so I saw plenty of games (and heard plenty of swearing from her), and he was inconsistent and error-prone.

On the other hand, there's barely a winger in the game I wouldn't be interested in at the moment.
